  • Today, we're finally looking back at what I've claimed on numerous occasions to be my least favorite Treyarch zombies map... until the release of Alpha Omega. With so much time since its initial release, was Blood of the Dead really THAT bad? Let's take a critical look at the map and find out!

    !!VIDEO CORRECTIONS!! There actually are 3 buildable tables in MOTD and the crystal doesn't actually kill Big Warden. It lowers his health to 1. I've just accidentally been instantly killing him with stray Magmagat shots this whole time. My mistake.
    Happy Halloween, everyone! I assume y'all have some questions, so here goes... I originally had no intention of reviewing Blood of the Dead until I reached 100k subscribers as promised, but due to numerous technical and copyright issues surrounding the Saw Retrospective (which I'm still having issues with, so that's fun) I realized that video wouldn't be ready in time for Halloween. I still really wanted to have a special video out for Halloween, so I asked myself, "what would be something that my audience would appreciate and I could get done in 14 days?". From there, the choice was obvious. Usually, it takes over a month to make one of these, but for some reason, I felt super motivated and ended up finishing this in just over 11 days. It was fun challenging myself with such a strict timecrunch, but now I think I'm gonna go lay down for a couple weeks and just relax. See you all when Cold War Zombies comes out! Take care!

    Literally any other Zombies map? Sure. That one? Nah. I'm good.
    P.P.S. I don't know how long it'll take to sort out the issues with the Saw Retrospective, so here's a link to the video on Google Drive for now.     My favorite part is that for a some of the audio logs in map, you can hear the Warden just rambling to himself. However, when you pull out your Spectral Shield and use your Spectral Vision while listening to them you can hear The Shadow Man's dialogue towards the Warden during the logs.

    I'll be honest, the Shadow Man being behind it, does make sense. Shadow Of Evil was the Shadow Man punishing the players for their sins just to escape, but I understand why it's annoying.

      I thought It was really cool that he was behind it. I know it takes away the mystery of mob, but it’s been so many years and a story needs to somehow progress right.

      @@glctcthnkr8059 well if it was never explained then the story of mob has no closure. Like it was never about the mystery, most people just settled on it being a hell dimension (which it was) and the keeper was the devil (which makes no sense story wise, but that's what everyone settled with).

      there was actually a newly solved cipher in BO3 that had the more city reporter saying Mr. Rapt(the shadow man) already knew all about"those 4 guys from Alcatraz" so Treyarch had been planning on it since then at least

    I always thought that shooting an empty PAP location with a soul blast to instantly move it to that location would help solve the roaming PAP problem really easily

    Did you know that when you activate the Pack a Punch for the first time, if you look over at the Golden Gate Bridge on your right, you can see the PaP being teleported over to the Island.
    This is honestly one of the coolest details in the map.

    With Great War Richtofen not showing any care with Richtofen dying, well. He does not feel sorry for his other self, as through befriending Pablo Marinus, now has understood the suffering endured by normal people as a result of his egotism. He understands the misery and sacrifice that his egotism has caused.

    Damn I didnt even think about the friendship aspect of Richtofen's death. This does not make his death easier to get over.

    It's kinda weird how hard they ignore richtofen dying, they were all concermed when he gets in the blood machine but when another richtofen shows up, they dont even acknowledge his existence even tho he is alive and calling for help from like 15 feet away

      I know this was a year ago but in the random dialogue Dempsey and Nikolai already talked about killing Richthofen and the crew had just recently met.

    The docks in the original Mob still has little use, as there is a third buildable bench in the cafeteria that they removed in Blood. Now it did have Juggernog and a plane piece, but unless you go down or want to go to the golden gate bridge again... yeah there's no reason to return to the docks in the OG version either. It's like the one small design flaw of the original version, but still nowhere near as bad as it is in BotD.

      There's also a wolf head at the docks in the original, which makes the area useful enough before your first trip to the bridge.

    I’ll never understand how at the start of tag der toten they are awakened from the cryo pods and there’s still zombies on Alcatraz Island didn’t post revelations Richtofen free the souls of Alcatraz?? And how is the dimension still open Didn’t the botd ending cutscene imply the pocket dimension was closed when Richtofen freed the souls how are victis even still alive?

      I've always taken it as they got unfrozen just after GW!Rictofen left the lab.

      I believe the running explanation is that the triggering that awoke Revelations Richtofen also woke them up but just on a slight delay. There are several minutes in between Rev Richtofen leaving the lab and the dimension closing. Him walking out, using the crystal, the shockwave going over the island, them watching it and having a conversation, richtofen talking with other richtofen then leaving, and a little bit after that for the universe to fade out. Considering they encounter the zombies within like a minute of waking up and then almost immediately jump into a portal I'd say there is a reasonable amount of time in that time frame for them to get out before the dimension closes. At the very least I'd say they could have just barely escaped before it all shut down.

    Rizzo I'm really glad you've done this review and had a fresh look at the map to take a look at the few things in this map that do work exceptionally well. The "Good" section in this video was my favorite part of it, because I like that you were able to get so much out of this map that you otherwise had a hard time looking at fondly.
    And of course every "bad" you listed was on-point. I can't disagree with a single thing you said.
    Exceptional video. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and think its your best review to date. Definitely worth the wait.

    I always liked how Mob of the Dead felt like a standalone story, deliberately evoking elements of the ongoing Aether storyline without directly integrating the two. There were some cheeky easter eggs that referenced Aether, like the Nikolai jump scare and the 115 code in the elevator shaft, but aside from understandable asset reuse (perk soda and the PaP machine), it seemed to be its own thing. Four men in Hell, trying to piece together the nature of their Groundhog Day loop and surviving against all odds, until the truth comes to light and they kill Weasel yet again.
    A half-decade before Chaos, MotD was Treyarch's first real attempt at telling a standalone story in zombies, independent from their Element 115 zombies and such. The setting wasn't earth, it was Hell (or Purgatory, if you want to split hairs). The protagonists weren't a bunch of morally ambiguous test subjects shepherded by the mad doctor who rendered them amnesiac, it was three unambiguously bad men and one morally grey rat caught in a world between life and death. There was no "Dr. Maxis" or "Samantha", the Hellhounds *really were from Hell*, and though the map was effectively a tangent from the ongoing Aether storyline with Victis, it wasn't a pace-breaking tangent, rather an intriguing detour with its own secrets to unravel.
    IMO, MotD didn't need integration with Aether. Shadows of Evil making cheeky references was neat at first, but as the continuities were further merged through the comic and eventually BotD, I felt more and more like it was taking away from a fantastic, self-contained storyline. That's not to say that the integration was handled poorly (except it definitely was), rather I don't feel it was *necessary*. This story was finished, and nothing was stopping Treyarch from simply remaking MotD in the style of Zombies Chronicles, or setting the map on Alcatraz with cheeky nods to MotD, rather than explicitly, clumsily merging the two storylines.
    As an aside, if the dimension where Shadows of Evil occurs was destroyed by the Apothicons, and that's the same dimension as the one where Mob of the Dead occurs, then why was Primis able to arrive on the island after the events of Zetsubou no Shima? Is it possible to time travel to dimensions before they were destroyed, or something? That part always felt super clumsy to me.

      Shadow of evil is part of dimension 63, the dimension where origin and the story of mob takes place. However, motd is in a pocket dimension created by the souls of the prisoners and guards thanks to the warden and the shadowman. The pocket dimension was created before dimension 63 was destroyed.

      Mob of the Dead honestly works better as a stand-alone story than a part of all the science fantasy bullshit that later Black Ops Zombies games have.

      Motd is still apart of the Aethet storyline and it ties a little bit with the protagonists stopping Brutus just like how in SOE they get the key and in bo4 they give closure to the map like who Brutus is and who’s controlling it

    You can definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but I've seen Pizza play this map, a lot and at the end, he's always the one to finally kill Brutus even tho Richtofen came in earlier

      After Richtofen and cleanses the land, Brutus is left with 1HP so the player can finish him off.

    I'm surprised under the nitpick sections that you didn't mention that using the Spectral Shield causes Gold camo to start glowing and flashing.

    This all reminds me of how zombies has lost it's point. In Black Ops 1, the gameplay and fun of maps were first and foremost. Each map was a fun new locale to kill zombies in. They would give us an easter egg quest to do if we wanted to see the story of that specific adventure play out. The information linking each map together was given through hints throughout the maps. They gave us cryptic little pieces, but never the whole picture. This led to insane theorizing and head canons. I remember when people would write an essay explaining theories they came up with from researching game clues, and even sometimes linking them to other paranormal or historical information they researched outside of just cod zombies stuff. Point being, now the story has overtaken the fun, and they feel the need to neatly tie it all together. The easter eggs are totally overbearing as well. So the gameplay suffers, and the story loses it's mystery. David Lynch's sentiment is very similar to the one I know from Stephen King, about horror. In horror, what the human mind makes of the unexplained is far scarier than just showing what it is outright. It's like when you're a kid and you see a shirt hanging in your closet, and through the dark you make it out to be a figure standing there watching you. The lore generated far more engagement and enthusiasm when it was vague and mysterious. Now it's turned into stupid crap like waiting for cyphers to be cracked, or intentionally written dead ends so you have to wait for them to feed you the next bit. Also, this trend of remaking maps but with Richtofen and gang sucks. I loved maps like Five or Mob, because they focused on the story of another group somewhere in a part of this zombie world. Blood and Classified only serve to make the uniqueness of the originals more generic by taking out the characters who were intrinsically linked to them. Could you imagine a Call of the Dead remake without the actors? Hoo boy, that would blow ass. It all misses the point so hard! Prisoners for a prison map, presidents for a pentagon map. I suppose once again it's arbitrary story shit trouncing the fun.

    I wouldn’t consider this a bad map. This map is disappointing, sure. But it’s by no means bad. It’s very mixed. There’s lots really amazing stuff here, and lots of awful stuff here too. I think this makes the map a mixed experience. I find the main quest abysmal, but I really enjoy casually playing the map. Pack a punch and perks are very accessible, and so are the wonder weapons. There’s also great holdout spots. Overall, I can’t really give this map a number score. It’s so mixed that I have to just take it at face value. Some days I love the map, and some days I hate it.

      @ gameplay isn't bad, it just doesn't hold up to what we got in bo3 and changes the formula a little too much.
      From my opinionated stand point, I like bo4's gameplay more than I like WaW, and some parts of Bo2 (excluding, mob, and origins). I'd say BoTD is probably as good as Shang gri la, or Buried.

    Every single in depth review video has been fantastic to watch from the COD zombies reviews to the saw retrospective (that I sat and watched in one sitting) to the older reviews on movies like transformers. You inject your own personality and style into your reviews that make them a joy to watch every time you make one. I hope Cold war is a good game and you continue to make videos on it and other topics in the future.

    The dock area is not irrelevant at all later on. The china alley is a great camping spot with friends , so building the shield there and getting it back always + using the Tommygun you will always buy your ammo back which also leads going back to the docks. With the magmagat/acidgat you can absolutely train there aswell for a while (same with spawnroom) even through you have 4 other places that do it better.
    Yea i agree the fast travels arent that fast like on VOD, but they are much more in use from gameplay standpoint on BOTD when setup than on VOD. The only somewhat decent training area is the poop deck and if you are going to camp with others , that happens in the boilerroom. So eventually there is no need for them at all because not really other ways to play the map with multiple people , only for escaping if its get too wild down there.
    On BOTD the laundry room can be used for training (probably gets difficult later), but you can in danger always you the travel to the wardens house to catch a break like on VOD with the boilerroom. Since the new industries area , the roof (maybe not in the high rounds) and the cafeteria are training places - the fast travel there is actually great to revive others or get ammo back for various weapons (mainly ICR-7 , VAPR , GKS , MX9, KN-44) or your shield.
    The gondola seems a bit meh I agree with that, i wonder how good you could camp in it with 4 people - every1 has ragnaroks to trap the warden + magmagat or acidgat.
    And yea i agree the EE is a pain with its steps(even through someone figured out how to the morsercode and its easy af now) and it would be much better if the bleed out zombie just respawns instead of a new round. Since the EE is not always the main focus, I dont think its too much of a deal rather a slight knock.
    Edit : If you play with atleast 2 others and use the best training spots - new industries, cafeteria and roof then eventually you will always know where the PAP is. If you are in new industries you can hear the PAP moving in the power buliding. So if its (not) there you know it , on the roof you know it aswell - if its not on both than you will actually know its in the China alley building down there ^^ but yea we should know where it is in the first place like on VOD or DE.

    I love the game over songs for the transitions. If blood was a movie, tv show, or animated short on the internet, it would be amazing but the gameplay is what holds it back. The music, atmosphere, and cinematography are stellar but the aspects you pointed out really ruined this map for almost every one

    That’s why this version of the crew failed so badly, they betrayed richtofen. It didn’t impact me like it did everyone else, it impacted me the way it impacted you with the added benefit of knowing there are alternate versions that didn’t kill richtofen.
    Just rest well knowing only the timelines that destroyed their keys to the multiverse were plunged into the dark aether. The realities that didn’t destroy their keys remain in the aether. So the multiverse exists. And since multiple realities plunged themselves into the dark aether that creates a whole new multiverse in the dark aether.

    Your point on the mystery of Mob of the Dead was really interesting because no one else has touched on it but it's so true for the CoD Zombies storyline. Where do you draw the line between giving an audience their explanation to tie loose ends and connect the dots of the story, but at the same time not make the truth behind the story feel worse than the audiences speculations? It makes sense for the Shadowman to be behind it with sins and what not, but it is a kind of cop out answer and like you said, it leaves the audience with no reason to leave their theories or the story in their mind. I remember back in the WaW and BO1 days where no one explicitly knew anything and the mystery behind zombies just made the mode so much more gritty and awesome to theorise, but now, it's just a mystical squid monster was behind everything, which I think majority of the community finds that a bit unsatisfying...

    Rizzo, thank you so much for this video! I'm very sorry that your Saw Retrospective got hit with so many technical and copyright issues to prevent it from being out on Halloween, as you'd wanted it to be, but this video was excellent, and definitely one of my favorites of yours! I have never played BO4, so I'd only heard bad things about BOTD, but I really appreciated how you were both very objective and informative about the good and bad parts of this map, which makes it seem better than I had thought it would be.     I 100% agree with you on Blood taking away from Mob's mystique. On the topic of maintaining a good sense of mystery I want to bring up an example of a property that executed it flawlessly. HBO's Watchmen.
    HBO's Watchmen, much like Blood, is an expansion on the original source material. It's set in the same world as the original graphic novel, however many years have passed and as such, there's many events that have taken place between that time frame. Those events are revealed slowly to us throughout the show, however it never takes away from the current experience to say "hey look here's an answer to that thing you were wondering about". Instead it clues the audience in whilst forging mysteries of its own which, unlike Blood, are never resolved. These questions are left to linger and be thought about and analysed by the viewer at their own will, making the experience FAR more engaging than if we had all of the answers.
    That's why HBO's Watchmen is a sequel done right whereas Blood fails to build upon the world in a tonally and narratively cohesive way and therefore, fails as a sequel on a narrative level.

    Great video Rizzo! I agree with most of what you said except the part about ruined mystery. While yes, sometimes it’s better to keep the story open and let the fanbase theorize and wonder, they’d been doing that since 2008 up until Chronicles in 2017. I don’t think you can fault them for finally caving. It did kill a significant part of being a fan of this mode which is the theorizing but man, that day they revealed then released the timeline? man, i’ll never ever forget it. I think we as a community just got to a point where we needed all the answers. Sure, maybe it would’ve been better if some were left unanswered but if i’m being honest, they were gonna do it eventually or the theories were just gonna die out by themselves simply because they’d all get old and the community would start being agitated at a lack of answers (which to be fair, by the time the Rev ending was found, we were all pretty agitated in that respect.) So i’m glad they did it before it got too annoyingly secretive and i’m glad they did it in a super exciting and amazing way. I don’t like the retconning of certain story elements but man is it nice to have concrete answers. Imo, it doesn’t blemish MotD or the overarching story line in any way.

    I mean it's sort of odd going off what we previously thought but it actually makes since in hindsight even looking back at Mob. Because there were radios of Stanley years after he stopped working at the Prison & he wasn't really involved with the occult stuff happening in Alctraz. But still a little weird the Warden would just randomly play dress up.

    There were actually a few more mistakes in the CGI cutscene, you know how the lab is outside of alcatraz right? The crew appear in the prison and just head straight towards the wardens office whilst being blind. In the lab cutscene of the intro after Richtofen throws the book, when the zombies are screaming out they decided to not walk up the lab stairs but walk into a wall. primis is blind confirmed

    We also are kinda told what happens to the Mob guys before blood came out. In BO3 and the comics, we see the blood go around as Richthofen transports it and blowing up the Shadows universe where the mob crew came from. They dropped several hints that they went throught the cycle many many many times but eventually broke free. Although we never knew if they’d be ghosts and the Weasel as a seagull.

    A lightning strike will appear at the next pack-a-punch location when moved but only happens a little bit after it's moved from the previous location and can be hard to see so you might miss it.

    when you brought up the nitpick of Takeo killing the zombie and the character model changes, that reminded me of something that I always liked with bo2 mob.
    basically, when you went to a new area while holding a zombie (i.e. cafeteria to warden's office), the zombie would despawn and respawn with a different character model. Rather than look at this as a mistake, i looked at it as a small detail, like "what if this is the map's way of subtly showing us that the mobsters are trapped in a time loop".
    another thing that goes along those lines is the fact that in the starting room, some barriers are only half built, and when you first enter a new area, no barriers are built.
    I just felt like maybe they did the character model thing on purpose for the blood cutscene, kind of like either a subtle hint or a callback.

    You made a great point on how being told everything in the Zombies storyline killed a lot of the interest. I do remember back in the WaW - BO2 days watching theory videos aplenty, and reading theories too. I found it the most intriguing part of the mode itself.

    One thing I will always remember is how at launch everybody thought the door that you open with the spoon(which is the start of the ee) was only opened when you have brutus at round 20. This in my opinion was horrible for its first impressions because everybody did the ee in like round 30-40. Thank God people found out the monkey bomb way.

    I'm very glad personally that when you brought up the retcons about the writing, I was glad you talked about the warden thing. Personally. I thought for the most part I was the only one that really only cared about that change because it makes no sense in the grand view. Which then brings up something. If the Warden didn't help Weasel did he help the mobsters in a sense? And if that's the case how would the zombies turn to help Weasel? Or did the Shadow man want it to happen to lead Edward and his crew to go there to get the blood viles?
    Either way I'm glad you did this. Shocked you did it so soon. But hey, It's still a fantastic video!

    Honestly I think the roof should have been totally cut. There's no Plane/Golden Gate Bridge (the biggest reason to go there in BO2) and the PaP machine could be moved or just cut so there's only two locations.
    Also it was never confirmed Ferguson was Brutus. So it's not really a retcon in BotD

      Old comment, I know, but you were right that the Warden was still left a mystery as it was confirmed Ferguson wasn't the Warden. Also had a theory of Alcatraz being a separate dimension after the release of Shadows of Evil since that map referenced the characters in Mob.
      Regardless, I also think the roof should have been sealed off too, would make sense as you can't go to the bridge in Blood, so at worst, it could act as a fast travel to other part of the map, seeing as the perk machine is located there too.
