Technically not in the book but something like it is said in Bruce's head. Honestly the animated movie is a near 1 to 1 adaptation, difference is instead of internal monologues there's more dialogue
It's pretty hard to imagine anyone but Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman, but I think that a lot of people can agree that Peter Weller did a fantastic job in the DKR film.

Kevin Conroy is great for a younger batman. This, however, is an old man. Peter Weller was better suited to the role.
I wish it had been Michael Ironside. He played to Dark Knight Returns in the old animated series. But Robocop kinda grows on you.

when I was a kid I got my first summer job as a messenger in NYC, I was 16, I remember spending my first paycheck buying Batman comics, The greatest superhero ever! period.

+El Padrino Well sometimes I think that maybe it was a style of drawing that isn't normal to regular comic book readers, but man some panels are cringe worthy. It doesn't lessen the value of the comic to me, still amazing, but its not the best drawing.

I'm in the middle of re-reading this comic, I'm appreciating it a lot more. it was one of my first comics, along with year one and The Dark knight Strikes Again!
6:20: Leave out some of the most important facts of the entire story... Like how superman's "mission" to South America had been to try and stop a nuclear bomb, which he failed at, the nuclear explosion itself weakening him and the subsequent nuclear winter blocking out the sun and cutting off a lot of his power (import to the fight with batman later on) Also the nuclear winter and the electromagnetic pulse takes out all of gothams electrics and communication sending it into chaos with riots and looting... This is the ONLY reason Batman acknowledges the violent thugs and gang members who were making him their leader simply because he kicked the last guys ass... And he accepts them because he can't restore peace to gotham without some sort of an army. On a normal day theres no way Batman would have gone out to the guys who a few weeks ago were part of a gang trying to kill them and offer to be their leader.

i watched the movie and it was great
I do admit, both the story and the cartoon movie they did were excellent. To those who complain about the cartoon movie, here's the thing. In most cases, when they adapt a novel into a cartoon movie, they try to stay as close to the art style of the book as possible. That's why the cartoon movie looks a little grittier. They stuck to the colors and style of the book as best they could. Also, I LOVED Peter Welker's performance as Batman. Hearing him give that speech at the end when he beat the shit out of Supes gave me chills. And for those who don't know who Peter Welker is, look up Robocop 80s version. Not that shitty remake they tried to do.
They should have cast Kevin Conroy as Batman in The Dark Knight Returns since let me say it and I hope all you guys agree on this he "is" Batman it would have made the movie a whole helluva lot better if Kevin Conroy said the epic line as Batman when Batman was kicking the ever living shit out of Superman Kevin Conroy "is" the Batman and that's that.
What did it for me was the soundtrack, it gave this story the ambience it deserved

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are hands down the best Batman and Joker. But you fans are assholes when it comes to anyone else voicing batman and joker. Let other people have a chance at the role. It's not like Kevin and Mark are going anywhere their next Batman project is Killing Joke which is more fitting for them than this version of the characters.

At 7 minutes and 8 seconds, the actor that plays the general in Man of Steel reads the quote from the Dark Knight Returns, and that is what my comment is about, having Kevin Conroy read that quote. I don't mind any other person playing the role of Batman, I just have a special place in my heart for those iconic voice actors. It's not because I'm a fanboy, it's because when I close my eyes and think of Batman, he sounds like the Kevin Conroy Batman. Same with the Joker and Mark Hamill. It's the reason they are in the upcoming Killing joke, and why they were in the Batman Arkham video games.

The Dark Knight Returns is hands down the best Batman story ever told, without a doubt. I don't know how Batman: Year One or The Long Halloween measure up, but I just ordered them online, so I'll see soon! If you're wondering, I don't consider The Killing Joke a Batman story, because it's the definitive Joker story. Batman is only a side character in it. Overall, TDKR is the ultimate Batman Returns story, The Killing Joke is the definitive Joker story (the greatest villain in comics) which delves into his past and explores his motives as well as his relationship with Batman, and Year One is the Dark Knight's timeless origin story. The Dark Knight Strikes Again looks like a joke.

That's cool I've got the whole issue and I'm also going to have Frank Miller sign it at Megacon since The Dark Knight Returns is one of the Top 5 best Batman storylines ever (alongside Batman Hush, A death in the Family, Batman Under the Hood, and Batman the Killing Joke) and one of the Top 5 best superhero comic book storylines ever (alongside Civil War, Fear Itself, Blackest Night, and Flashpoint Paradox).
Just saw Batman V Superman in sweden. I got the ending spoiled before thanks to people at early screenings. The movie was okey imo, the fight between Batman and Superman was amazing but the build up to it was actually kinda boring. But a descent movie i have to say. Affleck kicked ass as Batman :D I hope you others will enjoy it more tho =)

Am I the only one who thinks Vegeta and Goku's relationship (Mainly in the Android arc) was pretty much a better version of the Joker Batman relationship in DKR (The whole antagonist having nothing to live for without the protagonist thing)?

No surprise lol I just think the way Goku and Vegeta influenced each other to make their decisions at the end of the Android arc to be such great writing, better than DKR Joker and Batman mainly because of how their decisions intertwine, with Vegeta no longer having a reason to go on and Goku staying dead.

yes this is a great batman story but as a superman fan first I'm forced to point out just like always the Only reason batman can kind of beat superman , yes kind of is because superman is holding back and does not want to fight batman or kill him.
Actually weaponizing Kryptonite is also a way for Batman to get the upper hand, not just Superman going easy on him
if superman used his full power against batman with kryptonite, batman would literally be dead before his hand could reach his utility belt to grab the kryptonite lol

Not Batman related but related to the last part. Hyperion has been one of my favorites since my dad gave me his Squadron Supreme comics when I was 10. I'm excited that they have their own series now.

They altered the speech a bit in the animated movie(s). For instance, they left out the "my hand at your throat" part of it, if I am remembering correctly

The funny thing is, this was published in 1986 whereas the "A Death in the Family" storyline was published in 1988. So DC had clearly been planning Jason Todd's death (by fans calling a 900 number) for a while. 🤔
