I just wanted to say thank you, I just bought one of these as my first gun and was immediately overwhelmed. You were able to explain everything from modifying it to loading it in a simple and easy to follow manner, and as a result this has become much less intimidating and I'm even considering collecting more black powder revolvers now. Thank you!

My very pistol was a Remington that I bought when I was 14. It had a 12” barrel and was sold by Cabela’s as the “Bison Revolver”. It was extremely accurate! I shot a lot of rabbits, armadillos and frogs with it. It sparked my interest in vintage guns, and today I own six cap guns and another six open top conversions, all of which I use in cowboy action shooting. I lost that first Remington when my parents’ house burned years ago, sadly.

I just wanted to add, when I was 8 years old my dad took me shooting and it was the first time he let me shoot one of his revolvers, and I remember him always telling me to only load 5 even though it holds 6. He said you never trust the hammer on a live round. And all the years shooting with him and then into my adulthood, on all my single action revolvers I have alway left one chamber unloaded

My son gave me a steel Pietta afew months ago. It was rough out of the box with typical CNC burrs and sharp edges everywhere inside and out. But an hour or so of "fluff and buff" (my term) and it smoothed right out. BP is a blast for sure, and I love the Remington design better than the Colt which I also have. I'm that ignorant guy who wondered why anyone would want a black powder gun before I had ever shot one. I appreciate being proven dumb because I won't be dumb about that anymore. Black powder is fun, and even with only 5 or 6 rounds down the tube of my Kentucky using cheap round ball I can tell I could kill a deer with one of these things.
Watching last night during the lock down I spent gas money on BP supplies, and some conical .50cals for a Knight I got in a trade years ago and have never shot. When they arrive I'm busting quarantine, and going into the hills to make smoke and noise. Any germ that gets in the way will splatter all over the slug and ride it into the dirt where it came from. Just doing my part.

I would love to update with this new model army by Uberti. You are
"Mr. Black Powder" Mike. What a great hobby and passion these older
weapons provide. Yes the "Posse" has been after Evil Roy for decades.

Just a little tip that I’ve done with naysayers is if they comment it actually helps your vids in TH-cam as that counts as engagement. Hopefully that makes you feel better about negative comments

    Gatofeo here:
Very well done. No B.S. carried over from dubious sources.
I use .457 balls, ensuring a tight seal. The larger balls also, upon seating, create a wider bearing band for the rifling to grip. Better interaction. In some guns, and you won’t know until you try it, this improves accuracy.
On the Internet, see my postings in a variety of message boards: “So you want a cap and ball revolver?” and “Care and loading of cap and ball revolvers” and “Original loads for cap and ball revolvers.”
Titles may differ slightly, but add Gatofeo to search words and you’ll find them.
Very much enjoyed your alterations with Dremel. Will have to apply it to my Uberti Remingtons.
    Enjoyed your video. Good job!

Superb video as always Mike. Greatly appreciate your excellent educational video work on all weapons, old and new. I've got the same Uberti "Forged Frame" model in .44 Army. I am very impressed with the outstanding accuracy of the revolver. With conicals, (Lee 450-200-1R), the revolver, carefully bench rested, will consistently group in the center of a paper plate at 100 yards, in groups of around 3" using Swiss FFFg (35 grains). Quite powerful too! No chronograph data, but, this load will punch about 30% deeper into stacked paper plates than a 230 gr FMJ from my 1911A1 Springfield, even with a bit of bullet deformation (bullets cast with about 1.5% Tin, so just a fractional bit harder than pure lead). Other than a bit of action slicking, the only thing done to the Uberti was to replace the stock nipples with Track Of The Wolf nipples, as the large flash holes of the stock nipples allowed way too much blow back into the action. At 100 Yards, I hold the tip of the front sight full up even to frame top centered in rear "V". At 25 yards, I have the tip of front sight just visible above rear "V" bottom, and hold tip of front sight on target center in both cases.

I dearly love my Remington New Model Army. I have had it to the range several times in the past few weeks and it is a joy to shoot. I am going to have to try it with number 11 caps though. No matter what I do, I cannot get the number 10 caps on easily. It takes 2 strikes of the hammer to set them off, but that 2nd strike always sets them off. Also, with 30 grains of fffg and a lubed wad the round ball still sits a bit low in the cylinder, so I top each cylinder off with a bit of lard. Of course I am the belt and suspenders kind of guy, so the overkill is not a problem for me.

Hi Mike, you need to try out the Polish Capper that works great for the unmodified Remington New Model Army (1858s). It works great for both the Remington and Colt revolvers. It's a beautiful machined brass capper that holds 100 caps.

I have seen 2 Uberti and 1 Pietta purchased recently and simultaneously. The Uberti were 8" stainless target models, the Pietta a 5" blued Sherriffs model. Heres what I noticed. The Ubertis didn't shave a ring with .451, the Pietta did. The loading ram on the Pietta always released upon firing, a little work in the retaining notch with a mini half round file cured it. The Uberti were both infuriating for two reasons. They both shot 12" high with the sights adjusted all the way down, and even worse, the cylinder hand wouldn't retract far enough no matter where the hammer was causing cylinder installation to be almost impossible. If you got the hand worked past the outer edge it invariably slipped past into the center pin hole locking up. I was able to dress down the point of the hands to allow the cylinders to be installed easily, but had to carefully modify the curve in the middle of the hands to allow enough protrusion at the correct time for positive rotation. I used a small file and a dremel tool to cut down the rear sight blade and re-file the notch. Then I ground a small amount off the under side of the sight assy and ramped the boss around the mounting screw so that it forced the sight all the way down. They now shoot about 3" high at 20 yards into 1.5" groups with hot ball loads which I consider to be perfect. The Pietta shot close to this point out of the box. The Pietta has a frame that is about .100 wider all over, sticking proud of the barrel. Same thing on the underside, and trigger gaurd. The weakest point at the loading ram slot probably has 60% more metal in it, on the Pietta, but both are plenty strong. The rear face of the frame is much larger on the Pietta, but it has a larger, better angled much superior caping relief notch. The fit and finish on both is nice, the Pietta is chunkier like a Ruger. However, the grips actually fit nicer on the Pietta. One grip on an Uberti fits loose enough at the top that no matter how tight you get the screw it rotates slightly when firing sticking past the frame somewhat. I would buy either again. I miss the Buffalo Bullets conicals! Great mods you showed I will do that next.

I'm getting old and I've gotten rid of my last cap and ball revolver. But in my day if you wanted to shoot more black power than I buy a cannon. My favorite gun was a Remington New Model in 36, target sights, modified. When I slugged the barrel the ball would be tight in the rifling for the first third, then free fall for the middle third and finally tight close to the cylinder. With this crazy barrel this was a very accurate gun. I once shot this gun in a practical police competition and took first place. This against guys with gunsmith built autos and trick holsters. Ha.

Great video. I just picked up my first BP gun, an Uberti Remington New Model Army, and this video was very helpful. I haven't shot mine yet, as I am still waiting for our range to re-open, so I have been holding my revolver while looking in the mirror, wearing my Stetson, and practicing my Pale Rider squint. I appreciate the simplicity of the Remington model, but I do plan to get a Colt 1851 eventually, as I really am fond of they way they look.

Okay, Santa left an Uberti Remington 8" New Model Army, with an R&D 45 Colt conversion cylinder, in my gun safe for Christmas! At my local indoor range , Firing LIne HB, it shoots tight groups about 4" above point of aim at 40 feet using my general purpose 45 Colt load of a 200gr LRNFP over 8gr of Unique w/ the R&D cylinder. I also received my Guns of the West 44 paper cartridge kit and plan of working up round ball paper cartridges using 777. But those will have to wait for my next trip to Angeles Shooting Range. It feels good in the hand and just as potent 160 years on!

I just ordered me an Uberti 1858 new model army .44 Remington style repro from Dixie gun works. I thought about ordering a Howell .45 colt conversion cylinder for it from midway but .45 colt ammo is so scarce nowadays. Percussion caps are too. After I ordered the piece I contacted Dixon’s muzzleloading shop in PA. and they ain’t had caps in 2 years and they carry Swiss powder now but they are selling out fast and more won’t be imported till next year so idk when I will be able to shoot my new piece. Fortunately I have my Hatsan 135 QE vortex .25 caliber break barrel air rifle that I can shoot because I have plenty of H&N 30.86 grain baracuda pellets

Be careful not to load more than 17 grains on brass 51's if you want it to last without stretching, unsure about "58-63" (sry Mike, if you're reading this, but it's easier and quicker to say 58 than New Model Army) Remington's because of the added strength due to the top strap.

I slightly chamfered the edged to the chambers, so mine no longer cuts a clean ring as the lead gets compressed to a degree rather than gets cuts. I believe that this may reduce the chance of chain fires from the front of the cylinder - although I do not think I was ever getting chain fires from the front anyway. In any case the projectiles are seated better and performance should be improved to a degree. It has been quite awhile since it has been done, so I do not remember if I noticed any difference in effort. So it is a matter of preference when it comes down to it, it works either way. Theoretically, anyway, there should be a small performance increase.

I have an Uberti Remington and have been shooting it 15 years, It is totally reliable and I shoot 40 rounds in 30 minutes each Sunday at the range. All it requires is a clean afterward. I have a Pietta 1851 Colt. Great gun also but not as reliable as the Remington. If I was in a battle and shooting lots of rounds it would be the Reminton every time.

Mike, I just have to ask. Other then then the metalergy, were the original Remington's and Colts frames different than the reproductions? I just can't see back in the day using a file to prep the revolver to accept paper cartridges. When I see you using a dremmel I envision me doing this and then wondering how I will keep the bare metal from rusting or just looking...makeshift. Do you put anything on the bare metal when finished? Do you worry about compromising the integrity of the frame? I assume not as you have been doing this for a long time. As a long time fan, I thank you for your expertise. You are a superior teacher in the use of black powder weapons. Thank you for making my comfort level and satisfaction in all aspects of this sport a win win. PS: Thumbs up on the 2020 calendar. Beautiful photography. Phil

The loading window on the originals is sized for paper cartridges. I assume the replica makers don't accommodate them, because it kept the machining less expensive, and back when replicas got going, no one was shooting paper cartridges.

Thank you for these videos. Trying to learn as much as I can about black powder as hoping to get into it soon (contingent upon moving to a state where they don't treat cap and ball like uzis). You make the info fun and give me something to look forward to!

Great review! Why did the Remington have larger cylinder than the Colt, same caliber isn't?

As you observe ,these are very well made revolvers, the cap ports of course are made exactly as the originals in size and shape, that must have been a problem back then as well, I wonder what method they used to cap up in a hurry, the only thing that really spoils this is the very small grip size, "modern" man can only just get 3 fingers on the grip, which makes it needlessly uncomfortable to shoot, at least the Colt has a decent size grip to hold, (except the 1851 and 1873) but these can easily be changed for the longer Colt 1860 grips to make a much better size grip.

The grip size is just about fitting each individual better. The advantage that the Colt has in this respect is that you can switch grips back and forth between the 1851 and the 1860 and people did do just that in the past as they do now.

How about grooving the cylinder pin? I've seen this mod and think I'm going to do this on my Uberti NMA. Thanks for posting this vid.

Have you done a video using bp pellets?
( I am curious about using historically accurate pellets in my 1858 Remington 😁)

Hey Mike, I really enjoy your videos. I just picked up a Remington 1858 and can not tell who the maker is. It has original style markings but I am sure it was defarbed. What is the best way to find out?

I just picked up a 1973 Armi San Paolo from Dixons in Pennsylvania. The steel is noticeably harder than the steel on the current Ubertis and Piettas.
