    Wow there's quite a bit of hate in this comment section. I have been a Colt replica fan for years. I just purchased my first rimington last year and loved the fact that I could switch out my cylinders at the range. So far I've stuck with the black powder rounds as in Texas I do not need a permit to carry. I've never had a problem with my gun firing after sitting for several months. It is always been a concern of mine so maybe I should purchase a conversion cylinder for the house. Either way just wanted to tell you it was a very informative video and you did a great job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the replicas along with a very cool belt.

      When you say, "I've never had a problem with my gun firing after sitting for several months.", did you mean that you left it loaded with black powder and ammo, and could shoot what's already in it several months later?

      @@huyked The ones I keep in my home for home defense I fire once a year. The one I carry on my person everyday which is an 1858 Remington Ace I fire every single month. The Remington 1858 sheriff's model I keep in my truck. I fire every 6 months. I have never had a misfire utilizing this practice. Humidity is very high here in Texas so you can safely keep your black powder for that long in most other states unless you're talking about Florida or California. If you're carrying it on your body, it's definitely going to get the most moisture available, so that's the one I would practice with and reload consistently each month. Everything else you can play it by ear but 6 months to a year depending on where it is is good practice.

    Absolutely love this!
    I fell in love with this piece about 10 years ago, I saw a picture of it somewhere and it was love at first sight. Ended up trying to figure out what the heck it was for several months before an 1875 model happened to show up while watching Top Shot, and I knew I had gotten close. Dug a bit more and found out the picture I saw was the 1858, and have been crazy about it since.
    Definitely on my bucket list to get one and a few cartridges to go with

    I got a Uberti Colt Walker 1847 44 Cal recently at a gun show. It came with a brown Triple K holster, Howell 45 Colt conversion cylinder and a powder flask. Built in 2001, it is very tight and the blueing actually has a blue tint to it. This might be the charcoal finish from Uberti. I don't believe it has ever been fired. The bad news is the Howell conversion cylinder is a bit loose. Howell says Uberti Walkers made before 2002 might need to be fitted. Like sleeving the bore or something? Kind of the reason I got it. The cylinder is larger and so takes 6 rounds and has plenty of steel between the cylinders. I just got a brown Triple K belt to match... the Josey Wales collection.

    Nope, unfortunately you are mistaken ! There WAS a 45 short colt, and I'm not speaking of the Scholfield .45. The difference between the short Colt .45 & the Scholfield .45, was the rim diameter. The .45 Long Colt was designed for the Colt single action Army weapon used by the military in that time period. The problem with the "short colt" cartridge was that the rim was to small to effectively eject the shells in the Scholfield , so the wider rimed Scholfield cartridge was developed to accommodate the ejection process. The Army in it's wisdom didn't like the logistical problems that had occurred, So eventually opted for one weapon ( side arm ) that would utilize one cartridge, though all 3 were usable in the Colt Single Action Army. Hope this clears up the Colt cartridge controversy.

    Nice video and cool guns, especially the belt rig! You mention that in the period nobody would call the ammunition 'long colt' but you keep referring to the gun as the '1858' and I believe in the period it would have just been referred to as the 'new army' as that was the model name, 1858 was just the patent date for one of the design features.

  • @mrunderhood
    @mrunderhood 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    .45 long colt came about due to the Army using both the Schofield .45 and the Colt .45. The Colt could fire both but the S&W could only fire the .45 S&W. People began calling the .45 Colt the Long Colt because it was longer. Yes it was used by the public then but was not an official term.

      you can buy an original,BP gun,not a replica as its fac,but originals are better guns than replicas,bullet mould,no fac req.,Dont shoot it or its an fac offence.But in the future if shtf happens,you can make metal caps,and a little chemistry,make caps work,and make bp.A few spare cylinders,not replicas as fac,and dont shoot the gun.But if shtf happens,you will have a valid man stopper,long after the roaming gangs,have run out of casings to relaod,and cannot get propellant,and primers anymore.You can still shoot.I am english by the way.you dont need cartridges,to exploit the magazine loading of a new model army,Its the same for cap and ball cylinders,the 1860s colt cannot do this.An expert can swap cylinders in less than 2 seconds,its the first magazine loading pistol.And you get a BP massive smoke screen,to move and hide,and re/load,and pop up somewhere else.Only dont fire your gun until after SHTF happens,But you can get all you need,gun and a bullet mould,with no FAC,and no registration.I have one but it is modified to a 5.5 inch barrel.originals in the uk,might cost 1500,and cylinders when you can find them around 200 a piece.my gun is original 1863,but modified for cowboy action shooting,by a gunsmith,but here in holland too,its legal to own,I dont have a bullet mould yet,my remington I had to go to a top antique gun seller in netherlands as i was maybe returning to the uk,to get a certificate to prove it is original,Because it was fully restored,with the front sight changed,for a dovetailed,adjustable blade sight,and fully re/blued,So it looks like a replica.It does not look like its over 150 years old,but the modifications decrease its value,so i bought it for 850 euros.but it is 100% legit,by serial numbers all matching.

    I have thought that it would be really cool, if someone made a double action swing out cylinder framed black powder revolver that allows rapid swap out of cylinders. I feel that such cylinders using either standard percussion caps, or better yet 209 shotgun primers would make an interesting blsck powder 2 gun rig

  • @berhorst59
    @berhorst59 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree with your statement about Long Colt. The name was usedto distinguish between the S&W .45 Schofield and the .45 Colt. The Army had adopted some Schofields before the Colt, and the cartridge was shorter than the Colt round. Having 2 different pistol cartridges was a poor idea, and the Army adopted the shorter S&W round as it fit both weapons. So, civilians, realizing the difference, would actually ask for the "long Colt" so they would have the slightly more powerful round intended for their weapon

    1150 fps with a 250 grain slug is getting up there for any 45 Colt single action other than a Ruger. Have you run em across a chrono? For my 44 spl SAA clone by Uberti I like to run 250 grain cast slugs at about 830 fps from my 4.75" barrel. this gives me around a 45 acp/45 Colt power with very manageable recoil and good accuracy. Oh... I use HT coat bullets.

    • @RabbitusMaximus
      @RabbitusMaximus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      50 fps per inch is a rule of thumb many use as a conservative loss. With 2.5 inches, the idea of 100 fps max as the other comment suggests is not unreasonable.

      Louisiana here. I have never had a problem with the powder going bad. A cap, once. Or maybe it was just a bad cap. As a rule I do not keep a loaded cylinder for over a year but who knows how long it is actually good for? Just don't buy 20 cyls and keep them all loaded if you only shoot up one or two every few months. If you almost never shoot, just keep one in the gun and one loaded spare and if you need more kapow power than that you probably got problems too big to shoot your way out of, anyway. Just the same maybe keep a box of balls, a tin of caps, a flask of powder, and some wads right by the gun. maybe some bore butter or crisco if you roll like that. Or convert to cartridges, and you should be good for like 60 to 100 years.

    • @christopherhines2718
      @christopherhines2718 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i am english,but in holland,but pretty much,gun laws are the same,regarding new model army,originals are covered by antique gun laws,so you can buy an original,but the replicas are modern production,and as so are considered firearms.fact is originals are better shooters than replicas,but its considered if you own an original,you would not want to shoot it due to age and value,A nice original maybe could be had for 2000 euro,replicas around 350 euros,but you cannot buy it without a firarms certificate,but original you can own.But if you want to shoot,either of them,certificate needed.So dont try import a replica from italy as you will have police on your door.But you can find a real one on antiekwapens nl or be completely free to hold and if you wanted to shoot it get a license in germany.or just keep it,as if SHTF happens its easy to make yourself caps,lead balls,and a little chemistry,make BP and caps go bang,so in a SHTF situation,modern ammunition would run out,and shell casings can only be reloaded x amount of times,And no supplies of modern propellants,or primers,would render modern firearms useless.But BP revolvers and rifles could still work.

      thank you very much for answering my question,

    • @christopherhines2718
      @christopherhines2718 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hans you will not even get a license if you even mention the purpose of self defence,you will have to first join a gun club as probationer and train in the use of firearms and starting only with a 22 gunclub gun,you then have to be a member who goes to the club a certain amount of time in a year or so,later you progress to bigger calibres like 9mm,normaly around a year or one and a half year,you can apply for your vergunning and to buy guns and have them at home.when you have the license,you must have an appointment from the police,to come to your home,as you need a official gun safe,where any guns must be locked in,and only taken out for visits to shoot at the gun club,the only place you would be able to shoot guns.most EU countries are the same now.your license can be for 5 years,but you also must attend the gun club at least around 10 times a year,to keep your license.your guns must allways be in the safe because if you had a problem in your home,you would have to unlock the safe,where your guns cannot be left loaded,so you would have to load a gun to use it,this is because,the license is for sport shooting,not to protect yourself at home.And also if the police ever suspected you had loaded guns in your house,because you are a licensed firearm holder,they have a right of entry,without any warrant at any time,to check your guns,are in a locked safe,are unloaded,and ammunition stored seperatly from the guns.Random checks are also possible by the police.also the probationary period at the gun club,you are monitored by the club,and if they think,you are not a gun shooter,for the sport,or competition shooter,they will not reccomend you to the police to hold any guns.You would most likely also be kicked out of the gun club also.in effect you would have no quick access to guns in your home,this is to prevent them being used for self defence.There are also no provisions for civilians to carry guns outside the home.You also cannot have one in your car,unless you are going to the gun club,or the gun shop for maintanance or repair.Where it must be in a pistol case,with no ammunition in the gun or magazines.you can only have it in your car to or from the gun club etc.for example if you were caught in a police control with a gun in your car,and went shopping,on the way to the gun club,this would also be a breach of the vergunning.only from house to club direct,and direct home and guns in safe.These rules are designed,so you absolutely cannot have guns for the purpose of self defence.The only people who can carry guns for self defence,are police,military,and certain security forces.royal protection security.Its a long process to get the license,designed to find out if you shoot for sporting reasons,as a hobby.And any breach of the rules,and your certificate,would be removed,and guns siezed,and removed.Even as a license holder,if you break the law,like getting in a fight,in some eu countries caught drinking and driving,license can also be removed.Also i am not sure its in all EU countries,but in some you also need a medical,from your doctor.to prove you are in good shape mentally,and its kept on your medical records,that you are a licensed gun holder,and your doctor would be legaly bound to report to police,if you were having any mental problems etc.like severe depression.In reality having guns at home,could be used for self defence.only for example if law and order,and society breakdown,and anarchy came to the world.And you have armed gangs attacking and killing people to steal your food,or kill your family.But it is more likely,that if SHTF was to happen,authorities,would remove guns from civilians,as they have your address,as a licensed gun holder,but of course those who had possesion of illegaly held un/registered guns,would be able to rob and murder people.In short your guns would not be of any use to you,for home defense,as you would not have time to get to them,if your home was invaded by armed intruders.However the law always sometimes contradicts itself.Here is an example that happenned in holland a few years ago,A man who was a criminal,was in a snackbar,and he was carrying an illegal fire arm,there were many other people in the snack bar including children,But another criminal was after him to kill him,thats why he was carrying the gun.So the rival criminal walked in the snackbar,with a live grenade,and went to pull the pin,and throw it at the man.But the criminal drew his illegal gun and shot dead the man,in the snackbar,his would be killer,before he could pull the pin.so the criminal in the snackbar in fact saved the lives,of the families with children in the snackbar,many of the innocent people would have been killed or injured.He was arrested,and sent to jail,and was sentenced to 1 month in jail,for possesion of an illegal firearm,but not charged with murder.

      At the time there was 45 Colt, and 45 Schofield which was noticeably shorter in overall length. The Schofield would fit in the Colt and Remington as well as the Smith &Wesson that it was designed for. However the Colt cartridge would not fit in the S&W as it was too long. That appears to be the source of the commonly used name of "LONG COLT".

      Yes, you are correct. When Colt brought the SAA back after WW2 they realized million of men referred to the 45 ACP as the 45 Colt because of the war, Hence the retronym, 45 Long Colt. You will not find the term "45 Long Colt" prior to the 1950s. It is a twentieth century phrase.

    The 45 Colt was never officially called the "Long Colt" but there were shorter versions of the 45 round that could be fired in a Colt 45, so people started referring to the original as the "Long Colt". Winchester made a shorter version of the round.

    FYI, if all you have is a cartridge revolver, you can still load the 45LC cases with the same powder and .454 ball as the cap and ball versions use. Just a large rifle primer instead of a cap. You will want a wad over the powder. then crimp the ball in place.

  • @MaxRank

    The gun in pale rider was actually an 1861 new model. . These are commonly misnamed as the 1858 Remington-of which there is no such animal. Navy Arms founder Val Forgett Sr. called his replica of the ’61 Remington the 1858 to avoid problems with patent rights. Thought that was interesting.

    • @loboheeler
      @loboheeler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, there were no Civil War Remington revolvers named after a year. What we see now in the replicas is the "New Model Army", which came out in 1863. A progression of improvements that came after the first version patented in 1858.

    You are absolutely correct in stating that the proper cartridge name is "45 Colt". The "Long Colt" and "Short Colt" verbal designation began around 1877, when U.S. Government Arsenals ceased loading the .45 Colt, and began loading the ".45 Government" round. The .45 Government was basically a .45 S&W Schofield with rim diameter reduced to the same as 45 Colt. The reason for the 45 Government is because the U.S. Ordnance Dept had started loading the 45 Colt down in power, to about 30 grains Rifle (similar to GOEX FFFg) under a 255 gr bullet, instead of the original loading of 40 grains rifle powder under a 255 gr bullet, because the very powerful 40 grain 1000+ fps load was difficult to train new recruits to effectively fire. U.S. Ordnance loaded the 45 Government with a custom blend of FFg and FFFg, carefully formulated to push the 230 gr bullet at 800 fps. The U.S. Ordnance Dept in 1910, requested that John Browning modify the ballistics of the 45 ACP to exactly duplicate the 45 Government ballistics. [John Browning's original load for the 45 ACP was a 200 grain bullet at 900 fps].

    Nice video of your Remington replicas👍. However, there is no such thing as a 1958 Remington!
    *Firearms expert Phil Spangenberger tells us: “The gun used in Pale Rider was a New Model 1861 (not an 1863) Remington revolver. These are commonly misnamed as the 1858 Remington of which there is no such animal. Navy Arms founder Val Forgett Sr. called his replica of the ’61 Remington the 1858 to avoid problems with patent rights. “I know Clint used the 1861 model. He pulled the lever down to slide out the cylinder base pin (there is no barrel wedge on a Remington) and removed the cylinder. With the cylinder removed, he replaced it with a fully loaded cylinder, held in a cylindrical pouch attached to his gunbelt. “This was a very accurate re-creation of how the early Remington cartridge conversion revolvers could be reloaded.”

    I just noticed the cylinder in the movie gun frame does not have a cap/ring over the cartridges. In a closeup where Preacher just pulls the cylinder rod, you can barely see the rim of one cartridge and there is no ring over the cylinder. Further, the lower hammer face is ground to a point to directly fire the primers. This suggests a "regular " .45 cylinder made to fit the frame rather than a conversion cylinder with a ring and firing pins over each chamber. Was there historically such a modification or conversion?
