    In Wade-Giles, the "r" is written "j," as in French "je"--a zh sound. When I heard it, I saw it as a combination of the French j with a hint of r at the end.

    I have been told over and over that X (Hs in W-G) is not pronounced "sh," but more like "sy"--but I believe that's a Cantonese influence. I expect it's pronounced sh in Beijing. Or am I wrong?

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      X is totally different from SH in Pinyin. The SH in SHEEP is different from a common one because of the influence from EE after it. l explained that in another video👇
      th-cam.com/video/DQxskWdeadE/w-d-xo.html

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you are right. In southern part of China, (not only in Guangdong), most people pronounce it as SY.

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But we don't pronounce it as SH in Beijing because we do have X in Mandarin.

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Alicia. lt's poetric and related to Buddhism. lt shoul be 一方一净土,一笑一尘缘。一方literally means a place but it refers to one's mind. The first half is the reason: Your mind is a clean field which is free from all those happiness and pains in the world. The second part is the result: You have achieved neutrality and your reaction to all those things happened is a smile.

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lt reminds me of William Blake: To see a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wild flower. Hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour. Having achieved neutrality, you can see the beauty in ordinary things and be peaceful all the time.
