I'm a Chinese. In my region, we don't simply call people - strangers or friends likewise - Meinu or shuaige, not unless you want to flirt with them so it would be deemed as rude sometimes. In Mainland, I have seen people call men as "Da Ge (big brother)" for man older than the speaker or "Xiao Di (younger bro)" for younger man/boy. "Xiansheng" also works. As for women, it's true they don't use "Xiao Jie"; instead I have heard people called "Da Jie (big sister) for any older women and "Xiao Mei (younger sister)" for younger women. Probably "Gu Niang" is also used but not as often as those that I had mentioned.

I worked as an actor in China for 15 years and I was surprised to discover that 老师 is also a term of address for an actor, and sometimes other workers in a film company like make-up people (化妆老师) and so on.

True. He is the reason why I sometimes watch the same scene over and over again, in order to master it.
I think he gave advice for someone to watch the same drama back to back, because mastering that is like mastering 80 percent of Chinese, or something like that.
Well, I thought that was too intense for me as a beginner, when I came across that comment, so over 30 dramas later, a year or so has passed and I wish I had toughed it out. 😂
Many of the dramas I watch have the same concept and conversations.

But of course, all those different characters!😁 Also, a very clear explanation of the 小姐 thing!😁 I am 63 and when I was younger I remember some people refering to a "lady of the night" as a similar euphemism for prostitute🤣

I asked my teacher about "Ayí" but she was clueless about it, maybe because I heard it pronunced "Ayeh", and I said that way. I sometimes hear vowels like "eh" or "ah" at the end of names or sentences in informal situations and I'm wondering why. Thank you Wú Lăoshī for this great video! I enjoy your content very much.

In Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore, Xiao jie (小姐) doesnt have negative conotation, just simply means "Miss". I noticed in Mainland China, people tends to.avoid Xiaojie, and change to 姑娘, in Taiwan and other southeast asia countries, 姑娘sounds very old fashioned, look like this people come from certain dynasty era...

Nice video but I’ve never had this problem when speaking to Chinese in Chinese and even when I speak to them in English. They always manly tell me their Chinese name. Only few have used their English name they are called by.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting Chinese from many different provinces of China🙂as well as being able to visit different provinces myself.

Maybe because you are a foreigner. It's common for us to ask a kid "你叫什么名字?" but we barely do that to an adult. For example, nobody has asked me that question for 5 years since my son went to kindergarten and I've always been called as “ Wu Zhengyue Baba” among the teachers and students

Andy, the "xioajie" euphemism reminded me that in English, "Madam" can mean a female pimp. In the movie "The Producers", Zero Mostel politely tips his hat and says "Thank you, Madam," and the pretentious working class landlady says, "I'm not a MADAM, I'm a CONCIERGE."

It's still a little confusing. What if you dont have an american name nor a title? By replying with Jiao wo "your name" jiu keyile (sorry i dont have the correct punctuation), do people just all of a sudden stop being curious about what chinese letters your name is made of? Even though you introduce yourself as Instructor Wu, do people just stop wondering which "Wu" character your name uses? I assume it has to do with specically using the term "ming zi". Is there an implied obligation to clarify associated with that word?

In the first example of a formal greeting, why is it okay for A to use "你“ instead of "您“ in his follow-up to B's response? (B: "叫我Andy就可以了“ A: “Andy,你好!) Is it because some social connection has already been established between A and B, so A can refer to B in a more casual manner?

How do you say, "Dude"? As in "Dude, If you go outside they´ll kill you." I was watching The Untamed and a particular word as translated to Dude but I don't remember the characters for it

Great video. I have a question though about addressing middle aged professional women. Is there an equivalent to Madam? Would that be 夫人 furen? Or does this sound outdated?

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good question! It is 女士Nǚshì - madam, lady
      夫人 is Mrs. not madam
