Yes! I’m SHOCKED by the amount of comments here saying that I think this because people shower before they visit me. No! I think this because people don’t generally smell. I see SO MANY PEOPLE every day who never intended to have an exam and definitely don’t shower before - from labor to miscarriage, ectopic, heavy bleeding, heavy periods, early rupture, PID, etc - just because some people shower before a planned Pap doesn’t mean that’s all I see 😆 A very large number of our patients don’t shower just because they have visits and they still don’t stink. I truly believe this marketing is lying & people are overly self critical.

@@MamaDoctorJones there is NO harder work than Labor & Delivery... and you NEVER sweat more than post partum (maybe other places, but PP VERY sweaty)... vulvas in these situation should be VERY stinky & sweaty- they aren’t!!! I do agree with stinky feet... often the partners feet, LOL, I could never argue those don’t get stinky! Honestly, even BV doesn’t rival smelly feet. Retained tampons can be really foul, otherwise this smelly vulva/vagina campaign is really ripping people off for absolutely no reason!!! Great content!!!!

What's misleading is the use of the word 'odor' and "stench" to describe a normal SCENT indicative of the presence of certain hormones. A pubescent child may be concerned upon discovery of these changes, and too shy to ask, finds a deodorant an easy solution.

When I was in middle school, I was really self conscious of my lady smell when I sat (I just smell like a fish market around my period). Anyway, one day one of my classmates said to me “Yeah I have that too but I don’t think other people can smell it. Have you ever smelled anyone else?” and then I wasn't self conscious anymore.

Yeah we can usually smell ourselves when there is a shift in the way we smell throughout the day. Unless it's really hot, I think most of us can't smell each other and guys don't seem to notice either unless we really smell bad. I think we smell more on our periods when we wear pads or menstrual undies because we're basically sitting in a fresh puddle every couple of hours.

I would describe mine as a fishy odor too. It seems to have gotten more noticeable as I have gotten older. I also have never smelled anyone else, and one of my married friends who mentioned how she had been concerned about her husband noticing the smell (not necessarily due to period, but just general down there smell). He assured her nothing bothered him (she was trying to encourage me because we were talking about self consciousness in relationships with men.

Other CNAs use cornstarch baby powder to cover up the odor.
      Very heavy amounts.
      This causes UTIs.

One of the most traumatic things ever said to me (and please believe me when i tell you that it still affects me 20+ years later) happened to me when I was 15. My mom and I were arguing after she picked me up from school one day and she had her best friend with her. I was in the back seat by myself but I was sitting with my feet on either side of the center console, trying to aggravate my mom and her friend by taking up as much space as possible (my feet were apart at that point but my knees were kind of together still) At that point, words were exchanged between my mom and I that pissed us both off more and at that point I slouched down on my seat and did my best impression of man-spreading that I could and huffed out a breath. After about 30 seconds, her friend turns and sees how I'm sitting and proceeds to tell me (and please believe that I'm crying now just remembering this) "Young lady, you need to close your legs because I don't know what you have going on down there but you smell disgusting and it's honestly making me feel sick."
When I tell you, that I haven't been the same since, I'm not exaggerating. I was still a virgin at the time but when I did finally become sexually active, how I smelled dominated every aspect of my sex life. Oral sex (receiving) was never something I enjoyed until finally I got to the point where I would not let anyone go down on me. Even just having sex, how I smelled was always in the back of my mind. In my day to day life, any thing I smelled that was gross, I was convinced it was me. Up until recently I never really had mind blowing sex because I was always too self conscious to just let go (please don't think I didn't have good sex, I just never understood what all the fuss was about.) Last year I had the first mind blowing sex of my life because the man I'm with convinced me to let him go down on me and it was pleasure over load. There was no room in my brain for any thoughts other than how amazing it felt and while I'm glad that it's finally happened for me, I'm heartbroken for the girl inside of me who was traumatized (and still has trauma) by one bitter old woman's need to make a child feel small.
I still second guess how I smell when I smell something foul, I still have a lot of issues because of my smell, but I'm really glad there are videos like this to let girls know what is happening to their bodies when it comes to smell, is usually normal and not as bad as it seems in their head.
Anyway, I'm gonna go cry in a corner now, so thank you for listening to my trauma.

You probably didn't even when badly, remember some other will say anything ( usually issues relevant to themselves) to hurt someone else. So go back to 15 yo you and that moment and say to yourself in your mind, "That's not me, it's probably coming from you." I said say it in your mind as to not encourage/ agitate hateful people. It was never you! I'm trying it use extremely more likely that she's was taking her own insecurities out on you. So your initial premise from this incident was not correct and the unpleasant smells you smelled after that were either from outside of yourself, psychosomatic, or the occasional natural body odor that usually only you can smell. Or if there is a stronger or unusual odor coming from your crotch area you may have BV or something else easily treatable by a competent empathic doctor, and experienced by many. I liked the Wisp® (I think it's called Wisp, correct me if I'm wrong) commercials for bringing these issues out of the closest, un-tabooing genital issues, and more about self-care! 🎉🎉🎉😂❤😊❤

I am so, so fucking heartbroken for teenaged you. And that this woman stooped so low, looks like she was extremely immature, probably emotionally your age if not lower, and felt the desire to shit all over someone for quite some time. Shame your mother had people like her around you, and did not react to what that stank b herself said to you.
From my experience with such immature parenting and what I got to know over the years I can tell you with 99% certainty this woman had a nasty infection going on for some time herself. My mother used to (and still sometimes does, which is why I went low contact) do such low things to me (I am eldest) when I was a teen. Women like that are stuck emotionally in whatever place they are, but it's not our problem as children, that were born to this mess, to care about this - it's on them to fix that, and if they don't they better taste the resentment. I admire your maturity so much. Yes, teenagers act out - it's a natural part of growing up - and there are healthy ways to discipline the child. But trust me, acting like that woman did is not one. I hope she cooks with remnants of her own stupidity to this day. With that attitude towards weaker that her, she probably is.

I still don't like the way they treat it like something that has to be fixed. No one goes around sniffing people anyway. And if it's bad enough that someone can smell you in a normal setting, you should probably get that checked out. And as someone allergic to fragrance (I get rashes and migraines from everything that has it, laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, soaps, etc), I don't like the thought of putting that in an even more sensitive area, even for people who don't get rashes like I do. I like using wipes instead if it's summer and I need something that helps. Like unscented baby wipe things, that are actually made for that area, and hypoallergenic. Natracare made some nice intimate wipes, and they were great in summer when it would get sweaty down there.

It does help, too, to prevent the sweat rashes and issues from being overweight and trapping sweat in rubby spots. However, I generally try to use it as little as possible, especially when shaving there, because it seems like gunking up that area after you just shaved isn't great. (I am well aware of the argument against women shaving all the time, but I find my personal ick from sweat factor is less when I'm clean-shaven in all those spots) For me, the hair traps odor and it's easier to stay cleaner without it.
      Just some thoughts.

I use a strong (unscented) deodorant that contains aluminium; it takes care of the excessive sweating and thus also the odour. I could never go without it, especially not in summer. it's just regular deodorant though, not for any specific area of the body.

As an athlete all my life and a girl with a larger chest there are odors that this can be useful for. So I make body products and the active ingredient in Lume is mandelic acid, which is an AHA similar to salicylic acid commonly found in things for your face like oxy pads. You can swipe those on your pits for similar effect, and it does work. Some of us get odor near the vulva similar to pit odor because we have more apocrine sweat glands there. If your patients are like me, they take special care not to stink before their appointment, but might start smelling very bad within only a few hours after showering. This product is for those of us with active apocrine glands. I don’t get stinky feet no matter how much I sweat, but I recognize you might. I hope you might consider that others have active stink in other spots that might not be so bad for you. I agree the ads are too shame-y, but I’m feeling a bit shamed by the people implying it’s only a matter of showering. When I use oxy pads on my pits and parts, I get long lasting deodorizing that can’t be beat by any antiperspirant or ‘natural’ deodorant on the market with the exception of Lume, which uses a similar chemical.

I just went off about all this. I'm an esthetician and I wax women all day. The pit smell is a common problem. I have it myself. I either use Lumé on regular days or both that and a cream-to-powder product to stop sweating in general when I'm about to show her off.
Far too many women are in the dark about how normal this and how easily it can be fixed. I don't bring it up at work but if I'm asked you'll get all the advice you need. I've helped a lot of women feel better about themselves. I like that about my career.
Anyway, love Mandelic acid for darker skin tones as an exfoliant if you're whipping up any products in the future.

"I'm feeling a bit shamed by the people implying it's only a matter of showering"--amen. I sweat a lot all over my body. Before I moved to the deep south I rarely had odor concerns. My shower frequency hasn't changed, but it is so hot and humid down here that areas of the body stay moist practically all the time just out and about on a normal day. For me that translates to strong odor in the groin area. For pits I can use a strong antiperspirant, but Lume has been such a help for the groin. And thanks for explaining the different glands--I knew there had to be something different between people as well.

I don't put it directly on the vulva, I've found that putting it on my inner, upper thighs works well. So you’re telling me you can’t smell the sweat on someone during an exam?! I always took this as marketed towards B.O not your natural vaginal smell. Personally after having a kid and being curvy, all the creases and folds can definitely smell WORSE than an armpit because they get less air flow. And like some other people, I immediately was like “I have an infection, or something is wrong.” Even my OB said everything was normal. It wasn’t until watching one of their adds that I realized it was sweat. Now I pop a lil deodorant in the fold where everything connects and have 0 issues. So it’s not always a hygiene thing, for me I can take a shower and wear clean clothes but if it’s hot and I’m wearing pants I need deodorant or there’s 100% a smell 🤷🏽‍♀️ Yes, we should all be able to deal with a little sweaty smell but sometimes it’s not just smelling a little sweaty and everyone just says “shower regularly” which isn’t helpful. I do not like the shaming aspect of the adds, but they are definitely shedding light on something that, as this video shows, doctors don’t directly address often.

When I was reading about this deodorant the gynecologist said she invented this because so many women thought that they had infections because they had normal body odor. Like armpits the area can sweat and cause odor because of bacteria on the skin. The odor comes from the interaction of sweat and bacteria so I believe the mechanism of this is to stop that interaction. I think this appeals to people that sweat a lot in that area. That being said I have tried it, the deodorant works alright, along with using an enzyme wash on any activewear.

Everyone’s skin flora is just different and needs different things. This product meets that need. I don’t see the issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

It really helps under my boobs, under my belly where my c section scar is, and in that crease where your upper thighs meet your body. For folks in a bigger body like myself, or anyone that sweats a lot, or lives in a warm climate - yes you can get very sweaty throughout the day in all areas of the body. It’s frankly shameful to say “I don’t understand, do these people not shower?” People live in all different sizes and sweat-producing bodies and experiences run the gamut- even after showering odors crop up. I’ve never tried Lume personally, but the effort of putting a powder or a deodorant on the *external* sweaty areas preventatively should not be dismissed or joked at just because it’s not your personal experience.,

    • @NicholeParker
      @NicholeParker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I think what she means is, as she repeatedly says, she’s never noticed anyone smelling particularly foul. And she’s in a professional position where she would. People go to her when their privates smell. And almost everytime they do, they have an infection. Deodorant won’t cure infections. And she focused on not liking the ads, she said if you feel you need it and it’s not hurting you that you should feel free to use it. But the ads just push this “you stink, buy my stuff” message and that’s gross.

    • @britcommom
      @britcommom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@NicholeParker It may well be gross if you haven’t experienced truly foul inguinal/groin perspiration odors or anal region perspiration odors. Cotton panties don’t prevent them. Showering doesn’t prevent them. Powders exacerbate the skin irritation the inguinal perspiration causes (it’s acidic, it is an irritant, powder bunches into the crevices, making it feel like sand in the groin, and that really hurts). Humorous advertising, to the people who truly need the product, does not shame, and is not gross. It touches on a truly embarrassing problem and makes those who need the product feel validated and heard.
I realize that if you don’t need the product, it might well be a distasteful, disgusting advertisement. But for those who need the product, it has the potential to be life changing.

I'm a big lady too, so I understand the sweat and stink that happens because of flesh folds. Also the skin problems!
I didn't see it as her shaming us. I saw it as her giving us her professional opinion, which is that vulva and general body stink that isn't caused by something that requires medical intervention isn't a problem she's noticed. She *is* an OB/GYN, so her clients are more likely to shower before seeing her and to not have serious issues with hygiene. If she was an ER doctor she might have a different experience since the clients are seeing her for very different reasons.
There's also the fact that us laypeople have a very narrow perspective on what we think is normal and okay compared to that of a medical professional who sees a broad range of normal and isn't living in our bodies. I will often think I stink to high heaven because I'm big, sweaty, and have problems with care tasks because of my PTSD. But none of the mental health professionals or doctors I see ever think so. Even if I don't wear deodorant!
I think that's where she's going with it instead of a jab at us big folks.

...SO... as a biker I don't have to feel "called out" over terms like "gooch juice" or the sudden urge to vomit when I open my leathers unless I'm outside???
OH GOOD!!! I wasn't so sure how to feel about a product clearly targeted for my (male, motorcyclist, reasonable) demographic to at least a minimal degree being invented by an Ob/Gyn.
At the same time, while I obviously don't compete with an Ob/Gyn for the numbers of privates I see in a day, I can say that spending even a couple hours in summer heat on a motorcycle in full gear can have a detrimental impact on the olfactory health of nearly anyone down wind of me afterward... so they're not entirely wrong for the marketing "to men and women"... as I understand many women are riding motorcycles and being responsible enough to wear gear when they do... AND I'd hate for them to feel required to be shamed for smelling like over-ripe feet wrapped in leathery burnt bacon from head to toe.
Mostly we bikers just got used to it over the years and after the first burst of shame, we're calloused to it... BUT I'm also talking from 30 years on the roads and a LOT of miles through a variety of terrain... SO I'd be remiss if I didn't try to remember the impact of my first jacket stinking worse than last week's gym-socks and finally realizing that just came with the territory of riding... before someone invented deodorant to help with it...
A relative noob' might be put off riding all together if there wasn't such a product, and we (bikers) DO still have a dubious reputation for being relatively repugnant on more than a few levels that aren't so well deserved. I can't say I'm all that comfortable with "shame based marketing" anyways... BUT it's not all that unfounded in my experience. Lysol and saddle-soap is at least not the only solution for such things finally... ;o)

Most people who use lume aren't using enough or over the entire area. Moreso I'm interested if you could explain to me how you got an infection from using lume? From my understanding infection comes from bacteria or viruses entering the body through an opening. Having a break in the skin and being exposed to a pathogen. Since the surface of the skin is covered in bacteria, bacterial infections could be caused by a break in the skin alone. However since viruses cannot live apart from a host for very long a viral infection also requires a person to be exposed to another host of the virus.
So no, lume did not cause any viral infections.

exactly, this is what i was trying to say in a comment i posted above. i have to use deodorants and antiperspirants b/c i will get rashes in any place theres a crease in the summertime. i do mostly just the pits in the winter but in summertime when its humid, you bet i'm slathering stuff on everywhere theres a fold or a crease in my skin lol. ( im not overweight, im about 140lbs but still everyone has natural places where the body creases .) i dont use it on my ACTUAL crotch but many kinda refer to that whole area as a crotch area and ill use products in my thight/groin which is where your thigh creases into your pelvic area, then the pits, under the boob, even behind my knees sometimes in the summer cause of those damn humidity+sweat rashes .

I will say that after trying so many "natural" deodorants and having none of them work for especially after having my second child, I am amazed at how well Lume works. Every other deodorant I've used is fine for the first few hours but then I feel gross and wish I could shower 2-3x a day. With Lume I always feel fresh, even if I don't get a shower every day. Mommin' is hard and showers just don't always happen every single day.

That’s what I got out of it. If it’s not normal smelling (like smells like rotten fish or worse), see a doctor. It probably is an infection. Most vaginas don’t smell horrible. @@JDMimeTHEFIRST As someone who has suffered from hyperhidrosis since roughly age 8, and a lifelong compromised immune system, I can tell you that this attitude that smelling is a lack of hygiene is far more detrimental than the actual cause which is surface bacteria that can be more prevalent in some people, especially those of us with autoimmune diseases and disorders whose bodies can't fight off surface bacteria the same as healthy folks.
I did everything every damn doctor said, my Mom spent an absurd amount on different things, all while recieving antibiotic and antifungal treatments, and it didn't help. The only thing that vaguely helped was getting on oxybutinin and that slowed down the sweating to a degree but increased my chronic pain over the many years of use. The last 2 years I was on it, it wasn't even really touching the sweating, even in the middle of winter. No doctor has been able to come up with a solution that will work because my insurance won't cover botox or surgery, so some days I just have to sweat through 2 or more changes of clothes. The difference with using Lume versus the list of typical antiperspirant/deodorants is that my clothes don't stink and aren't stained with residue that will never come out, and I don't smell. Some days I do need two showers just to cool off and feel clean, but it's usually not necessary for smell unless I've been stressed. Oh, and since switching I haven't had any lumps in my armpits that required ultrasounds to check for cancer like I'd dealt with since I was 17 and using prescription then just prescription strength (insurance stopped covering the Rx) antiperspirant/deodorant.

As a happy Lume user, I feel the need to chime in. No, I don't use it on my lady parts. I do use it on my underarms.
It does the job and at the moment is the ONE deodorant I can use without getting a rash. I have yet to pinpoint the exact cause of these rashes, so every few years I have to go through a horrible itchy trial and error period to find a deodorant I can wear. I find one and use it until the manufacturer either changes the formula of discontinues the product. I hope Lume stays around for a while.

I agree with you @JuliHath. Peri menopause has caused my chemistry to change and regular deodorants don’t work anymore. Lume controls my stanky underarm odor and I am not allergic to it.

I can't use regular antiperspirants without getting cysts in my underarms, natural deodorants don't last, and I tried the square salt deodorant. One thing I did find is pit putty. I've only bought it from whole foods. It's arrowhead powder and essential oils.

Personally I love lume. A medication side effect I have is excessive sweating and the last few years I'm very self conscious of my stank. For those of us who shower regularly and have good hygiene but have issues like this, lume just helps us feel more confident that we arent stinkin it up throughout the day. Just my opinion that I dont feel the marketing is shame based but it is definitely marketing to a specific clientele. I love mama doctor Jones and appreciate her so much. I totally respect that as she says she's sees more than her fair share of crotches and is rarely offended by someone's odor, I do however suspect that the majority of women make an effort to freshen up before going to see their obgyn. Just saying, some of us cant shower multiple times a day and lume is helpful

I think that a lot of us are much more sensitive to our own smells like I often feel like I can smell myself (to me its kind of metallic) but I asked friends and they say they don't smell me or that I smell floral even when I think I REALLY STINK so I just want people to be aware that even though you may smell yourself other people most likely do not smell you

Ma'am, Lumè works. I use the unscented literally everywhere. I can shower every day and still get a little BO scent at the end of the day. But I love Lumè. I've even bought a couple for my friends and family. Everyone I've shared it with feels the same way. Maybe you should just try it out. It works. For me at least. Thanks anyway for the video. Lol. ❤😊

Just gonna be super gross and say it....yes, it is an issue for some people!! I’m a ballet dancer and when you’re in a studio for hours and hours with tons of over sweaty people working your butt off....doesn’t matter if you showered right before, you’re gonna stink😂 and sometimes I have somewhere to be right after class/rehearsal and don’t have time to shower. Happy for you if its not an issue but yes it’s definitely an issue for some!

Kaylah shaylene! I have the same issue in different circumstances. I work 12 hour shift at a hospital and walk roughly 8-10 miles per shift. Sometimes I smell like a gym bag half way through my shift. No one is sniffing around but I know it’s there and feel that I cannot do anything after work until I shower!! I ordered Lume and I’m waiting to receive it, probably not going to apply in the “crevice” but on the outside like my groin where it meets my legs. I’m assuming you can relate lol

Yeah, but most of us don't do intense physical labour all day. Even moderately intense activity won't produce a huge amount of BO (I'm on my feet half the day, just not exercising). This is a niche product being over-marketed.
