  • In many people’s mind, training hard to training a lot. Training hard means lifting better and/or adding more weight to the bar on big basic lifts. For bodybuilding work, training hard means going to failure. Doing more exercises and more sets does not necessarily equate training hard. Listen to learn more!

  • @haktezak7413

    Its impossible to quantify and predict your muscle gain, thus weight on the bar is not indication of anything. Training hard is simply performing really high so adequate stimulation will be achieved thus result in muscle adaptation and growth. When you find range in which you are able to perform really well and do proper amount of volume, you will see steady mass gain. But that is not easy and it really requires testing, making mistakes and learning from those mistakes.

But man it annoys me that they dont even have a plan or goal for what they're trying to build, or have the proper technique and form for their specific build. Its all ego and typical information that gets thrown all around.

    It does depend on your goals though. Very specific example would be david goggins, he did sets of 300 reps on machines, because he had to loose like 100lbs in less than 3 months, so he would do a lot of running, swimming, biking and when his legs were to fucked from all that he would train upperbody using high reps on machines without rest. But I would not reccomend this aproach if bodybuilding or explosiveness is your goal.

    what about if your a little older like me , im 50 now and its hard sometimes to train at 80 % without more risk iof injury . How can i maximize growth 15 reps 12 reps slightly lower weight ? Thanks

    • @THIBARMY
      @THIBARMY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      How heavy you go is not the only measure of "training hard. Training hard is more about "intensiveness", i.e. how hard you are pushing your sets. It uses the RPE scale (rate of perceived effort). For example, if you go to failure on your set, that is an RPE of 10 (on a scale of 10). A warm-up set is an RPE of around 5-6. A hard set, leaving around 1 rep in the tank is a 9, etc. For hypertrophy, the key is accumulating enough "maximally effective reps". Reps where all the recruitable muscle fibers come into play and are under mechanical stress. This occurs when the weight you are lifting represents 80% of the maximum you can lift AT THAT MOMENT. Not 80% of your maximum. You create fatigue every reps (2-4% fatigue on each rep normally). So even if you are using a weight that is 65% of your max, by rep number 5 or so the weight now represents 80% of what you can lift at that point and from that point on, all the reps are maximally effective reps. Whether you do 6 - 15 reps, if you train at the same RPE (e.g. 1 rep short of failure) you will get the same number of maximally effective reps in your set; around 6. That's one of the reasons why a study by Cameron et al. found the same muscle growth in people doing 3 sets to failure with 30% of their max and those doing 3 sets to failure at 80%.

      Also consider to train more often than train a lot in one workout. If you do 4-5 sets per exercise and you're sore for days and especially if even having mild joint pain. Instead you can do less sets per exercise and with the faster recovery do more workouts/week getting the same total volume. As long as the sets are good (bring you close to failure, with good form) the total sets per week/month will be just as effective, if not even more effective. This is due to quicker recovery. You seriously don't need to kill yourself at the gym, especially if you're a beginner. I have done this myself recently and my shoulders already feel much better after only 2 weeks. I went from 5 good sets per exercise 4 days a week, 80 total sets/week to 4 good sets per exercise 5 days a week, still 80 total sets/week but I recover much quicker now. My workouts also went from around 1 hour 30 minutes to about an hour which overall makes me feel better even though I'm training 1 more day a week it feels less mentally taxing.
