    "the reason we tie", Competition nymphs are so utilitarian. Making them interesting is wonderful. That is a beauty that would work well on an unweighted hook as well. Thanks for starting my day with a smile.

    Hi Dave, have you written a book on your flies on how to tie them? I've only been tying for a year, and at the moment, I find it hard to finish on the head, so I'll be great full for any helpful hints you could give me.
    Many thanks Mike

      Hi Mike,
      I've not written a book though at one time I did think about it but it just never happened..Finishing the fly and getting a good head mainly comes down to watching how much materials you are putting on as most times less is best..Keeping a tight thread is important as slack turns bulk up the head so waxing your thread helps the thread turns stop slipping as well as it will give you far more grip when you need it and with less turns.. It also strengthen your thread making it less likely to fray and break as this is why I do this in my videos..
      All the very best Davie

    Hey Davie, good looking fly! How does one decide what thread to use? size is easy to figure out, but brand and type? Is it only personal preference? Thank you Sir!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @HalfInsaneOutdoorguy,
      Over the 40 years of tying flies I have used a few different threads so the ones I use are the ones I prefer and have got used to using even though there's many good threads that I could use..As you may know I do use Uni-Threads especially the 8/0 most times and I have been using it almost all the time I have been tying, the other thread I like is the UTC 70 which is a flat thread and is perfect for tying buzzer/midge pupa as it gives you a smooth body..

    Lovely pattern, just wondering how you dye your peacock feathers? I've been given a large bundle of the complete feather.🤙🙂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Hi @Rustyboyyy1,
      I have attached one of the videos where I dyed some feathers and this is how I would dye the peacock eyes as well. Just give them a light wash before you start and while they are wet add them to the dye, they take the dye really well so you shouldn't have any problems..th-cam.com/video/s18jJdSyFig/w-d-xo.html

    I’m still trying to learn the many techniques in Fly Tying, for this pattern, did you strip one side off of the peacock herl for the effect ?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @hirkojs,
      I know it looks like the herl is on both sides of the quill but it is only on one edge but on both sides of that edge. I did think this myself that it was on both sides until I looked closely one time..The best place to find the herls is on the peacock eye and slightly down as this is where I got them for this pattern..
      All the very best Davie
