      Exactly what I came here to say. There are Turkish smoking pipes called Meerchaum pipes (probably spelled that horribly wrong) and they start out white but over many years of use they age and get more yellow to brown and it makes them look cooler. Aged books are like that but more healthy 😅

    Scalpers can rot in hell, honestly, our community doesn't need that on top of shortages and covid related stuff on top of out of print and stretched out reprints, it drives me crazy that I have to be on my game for every release where 4 or 5 years ago I felt no worry what so ever, like it was more like there were too many printings back then.

    Personally, I like to wrap in plastic my manga, but not with that cheap ass plastic bags you showed. Those can actually cause damage to the manga, because they have at least a little bit of acid. I use especial manga bags for different sizes, acid free and with uv protection, so the pages dont turn yellow, and the dust doesnt affect the volume. Also, these plastic bags are almost to perfect fit, so theres no much room for moisture to be inside. Great video tho ❤️

  • @Edog1337
    @Edog1337 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Plastic wrapping will help inhibit oxidation and that is about it.
    You are right though, and it will trap moisture and lead to a mold trap. It will have degassed plastic odor make the volume smell. It will not stop fading from UV light damage.
    Yellow pages are inherent with the cheap newspaper-like Acid containing paper used in most manga. If it wasn't meant to turn yellow, it would use Acid-free paper like any hardcover novel, or glossy acid-free paper like those Berserk Deluxe behind you.
    The best way to store manga would be in an oxygen free room with dust-free circulation from HVAC, 50% humidity, 70deg F, no light whatsoever, volumes stored upright position and tight but not too tight to each other with space behind and in front for circulation. For those of us in the real world, just stick a Contact paper on it, store it on a nice shelf away from the light in a comfortable room.

    sadly i am one of the people who wrap their mangas in plastic, but the manga in Mexico although it is cheap also brings many quality problems most of the time causing it to turn yellow too quickly, so the best way to maintain a manga in good condition is leaving them in that plastic that in fact they sell it to you from the store, but I totally agree that it is a kick in the butt that when you want to read one of your manga you have to go through removing the plastic first xD

    So, I agree with everything you say! Here in Mexico every single volume is plastic wrapped, and the manga stores even sell you plastic bags if you want to rewrap your manga. I personally don't like it, since, as you say, it's annoying to have to take it out every single time i want to check out any volumes (plus, imo, it makes you want to interact less and less with your collection, since everything is wrapped, you won't want to ruin the bag).
    People here do it mostly about the yellowing, but also for the "new" smell to stay and because it's less probably that it'll get messed up by moisture. Over here is easier to have it wrapped than it not since when you buy it it's already like that, but i do understand why it's weird over there since you'll have to go out of your way to always wrap it up.

    • @kaywonix

      I don’t mind wrapping my manga collection. Other than preventing brown pages, I usually don’t touch a manga I finished for a long time, so I don’t really have any issues with interactivity, also I like to take a book or 2 when I go out and I’d like to minimize as much damage as possible when carrying it in a bag or leaving it on a table. As some comments have already said, in Mexico is pretty common to keep your mangas wrapped in plastic lol and most content creators inside the community encourages people to do the same. Every single manga in mexico is sold wrapped in a bag, and its reusable. I think its more common to do that here because the quality of the volumes is lower than the english volumes (they are not bad, is just that the covers tend to be thinner).
    Some covers can get scratched easily, or get stained

    Great video Raian! I am guilty of using plastic sleeves on my manga LOL BUT it's only after I finish reading them. I bought the sleeves because I come from America comics and it's normal to bag + board your comic books. Obviously with manga, it is far less common but I decided to buy the sleeves and see how I liked it. TBH, I wasn't a fan at first because it doesn't fully protect the manga (VIZ/Shonen titles in particular). I did continue to sleeve them up because the pack came with 100 and it grew on me. I sleeve them up as the "final step" after completing a volume. I hope I made a good case for sleeving up manga 😅

I had the sudden realization of how much money I spent on a series, and so I obviously wanted to protect it. It only lasted for a few months, and then I got rid of all of the plastic sleeves lol. It's just stupid honestly, it entirely defeats the purpose of a collection to begin with. Half the point of buying/collecting is being able to freely pick up and glance through them. When they are in those annoying sleeves, they end up just sitting on your shelf, and you never actually look at them. It's almost like you don't even own the books, and they are more for display.

    I think it's fine when someone (who has infinite time on their hands) wrap their manga individually, like you know using those clear book wrapper that we used to do with our textbooks in school with the tape and all. It looks neat so gotta admire their efforts to do that. But if they just shove/put their manga inside a plastic bag like that, then sorry but it just looks ugly lol

    My manga is just randomly put onto a shelf, not in any order. Also if you are going to wrap a manga in plastic, just put a white cloth over it like they do for in certain museums or with famous art. Or at that point just put the manga in a box somewhere, only put the manga you want to read or display on the shelf

    It's just too cumbersome to put a manga volume in a plastic bag to prevent from deterioration. I normally use inexpensive cellophane sheet as book cover for new manga volume and it protects the cover while I read the manga. When I get tired of it, I still can sell it as used in good condition and book cover helps.

    I still have my Sailor moon and Ranma 1/2 manga from the late 90s and the yellowing is minimal if any, I also don't think people have to get so worried about it that they wrap each volume

    I cannot understand the hatred of yellowed pages. I was into books way before I was into manga, and I personally love a yellowed book that smells like an old book. Newer white ones cannot compare to an older book (with a cover and spine in great condition though). I actually will enjoy it when my manga look somewhat aged.

    I personally haven't seen organised spines across volumes, I'll have to check what I have again but yea I never though right to left organised, don't know much about japan but one thing I do know is that japan doesn't do right to left organising numbers
    the yellowing though... someone saying it adds character. I'm about to pass out from a panic attack here! just keep them out of direct sunlight. someone get me some oxygen..

    I have some series arranged backwards lol, but that’s not because they are manga, if you look in my normal bookshelf with all the other books, there’s also some series which are sorted backwards and some which are sorted forwards…Don’t ask me why, it just happened to be so.
    Maybe I should take some time to organise it a bit more xD
    And yea, who would use such plastic bags? I mean maybe in some countries where they aren’t that high quality but still it looks just awful.

    Yea scalpers are really annoying, I currently want to buy all the volumes of One Piece, but getting from 3-70 is very difficult for me. I have to buy all my manga online as there’s no stores that stock Manga in my country.
    I’ve bought from 1-3 & 70-98, but getting all the earlier volumes is hard, the first 3 box sets have been sold out for months, I can get them on eBay but they’re at the very least double the price, some 5x the price.

  • @giffica
    @giffica ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I agree, I only wrap old volumes pre-90s because they tend to degrade. Anything older has oxygen exposure issues to the air, and the manga will turn blue. Especially Japanese prints. The yellowing is less of an issue. If you are in a humid climate too you should almost never bag things because like you said, traps moisture, it's really for dry environments. (Which is ironic since Japan is THE WORST PLACE TO BAG MANGA) I actually bag the rarer manga I just don't want people touching and keep them aside. Otherwise, manga shouldn't be bagged.

    I never really thought about that you read it right to left but you store then left to right. On the One Punch-Man Japanese version, I only have 1-10 and 19. On the One-Punch Man English version I never group them together. I have them in the box by when I got them. Never figured out why the (-) is moved on the two versions. When I talk to most people they just say One Punch. When you say the bag traps the air inside how would it do that? It’s not air tight. On the protection from Sunlight most bags don’t protect from that. They have to be UV museum grade to do that and some bag provide no protection and can damage your Manga. Having your Manga on book shelves will damage your manga over time. I could talk about paper and how to best preserve it all day. Just know direct sunlight is not a friend to paper. Just take some photos of a new manga volume and put it on your book shelf and come back in a year and take another photo and compare the two. There will be a difference where the book was exposed to the elements.
    Scalpers are the worse. There should be a law against those kinds of people.
