    I've done a few timing chain/belts and even if I think I know how to do it I watch a couple videos incase I'm missing something or for any tips. This was the first video I clicked for an Equinox and you sir are amazing! By far the best repair video I've ever watched! IDK what other videos you do but I liked and subscribed.

    This is one of the best videos showing cam and balance chain replacement. You are an excellent teacher, and your breakdown of using a degree chart is a game changer. Thank you for the torque specs also. Keep up with the videos. This one is gold.

    Thank you for posting this! I found this video very helpful in a lot of ways. Ive never attempted a timing chain replacement because of the fear I might get everything out of alignment so this helps but I have a question. Do I or should I drain the oil before opening up the timing chain cover and should I remove the head to check the valves for damage as well?

    Trying to troubleshoot a 2012 2.4L Equinox. Wondering if it is the timing chain stretched and jumped a tooth or something else. Only codes that appear are o2 censor running lean and that appears randomly then disappears. Vehicle starts as normal but will sometimes sputter between 750-2000rpm and engine will sometimes die. Vehicle restarts without trouble. Random and unpredictable misfire occurs. Gas pedal becomes unresponsive while engine is fighting to stay running. Issue seems to lighten up and or disappear after motor has ran for 10-15 minutes. New air filter, cleaned MAF Sensor, Cleaned throttle body, cleaned PCV port in intake manifold, Intake and Exhaust camshaft solenoids replaced, plugs pulled and replaced, new O2 sensors. 95k miles on motor, and 500 miles on new oil change.

    My daughters car is a 2010 2.4 Equinox. It died on the highway. I had it towed home and took the valve cover off and the bolt that holds the intake phaser sprocketvon the cam broke. I guess i would have to remove the cam and takevit somewherevto have the bolt removed...i did notice the sensors had heavy crud on the screen. Did that cause this? Is it worth fixing or should i junk it? Thank you for you video. It helped me a lot.

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could try drilling with a left hand bit in the center of the bolt and use an ease out, if you can get to it with a drill. If the threads weren't damaged when the bolt came loose or broke, the rest of the bolt should unscrew out. If the threads were damaged and the ease out won't get it, then the cam will have to be removed, and taken somewhere to be repaired. Could get a new or used cam. Could also get a good salvage motor and take parts from it and use on your current one. Have to pull the timing cover to see what's all damaged down in there and see if there was any valve to piston contact to know if it's worth fixing.

    my p0010 code popped up on a pontiac g6 2.4 ecotec i’m hoping it’s the wiring i don’t feel like having to change the timing chain in my apartment parking lot atleast not just yet

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could be a wiring problem or a bad VVT controller there on top of the head side by side. This vehicle had one go bad around 60K, replaced with a new one and code cleared.

    Thanks for the video. Question - before removing the timing chain, I am trying to line up the camshaft and intake /exhaust cams to TDC. I can’t seem to rotate the engine more than a few degrees in each direction - then it stops. Any ideas? Should I remove everything and then line up TDC etc?

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Removing the spark plugs will help with rotating the engine. You can put the belt pulley on and bolt it up to turn the motor over with a ratchet. Unless the timing is off and your making piston to valve contact.

  • @painkillerpills
    @painkillerpills 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    when you rotate the motor, lets say 2 times around or even once should the timing marks and arrows still line up? in these videos i dont see anyone rotating as if it doesnt matter. im not so sure

    • @hp_outdoors

      No, after 1 or 2 turns the marks won't be lined up.

    Didn’t you say this was an LEA engine? If so aren’t you supposed to put your cam arrows at 10:00 and 7:00?

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      10 (Intake) and 7 (Exhaust) o clock is the camshaft end notch position, not the timing arrows on the phaser sprocket. If you're installing a camshaft or had a new/reman engine without timing components or sprockets, you would set/check the cams position by the notch on the end of the cam.

    After I replaced the Timing Chain Kit for My Chevrolet Equinox. Then, It appeared "Engine light" is on .
    Is it true that they messed up something in my car ?
    Now they diagnosed, the codes are below:
    P0014 Exhaust Camshaft Position System Performance
    P0137 HO2S Circuit Low Voltage Sensor 2
    The machanic told me If I don't fix, The car will consume more gas.
    My questions:
    1)If I don't fix them, Will there be any damage to other parts of the car ?
    2) How long can I drive before I can afford to fix them?
    3) what are the costs to fix those two codes ?
    Thanks a bunch

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For the P0014 I would check the cam actuator solenoids on top of the head, timing chain end of the motor. See if the screens are covered with metal. P0014 needs to be fixed that's timing related. It could possibly be timing is off, or chain may have jumped somehow. If it was the o2 sensor #1, then drivability would be a concern. With o2 sensor #2 only trouble you should have is a failed emission test.

    Hello there I have this problem rebuilt the engine 2013 2.4 . And know every time I startthe car a winding noise coming from the timing chain area . Pulled off the oil pump cover replace the timing, chain and gauge again still making the same whiny noise.

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it does it on start up and not all the time it could be the phaser sprockets. They can get very noisy.

    If you do not get a code for this issue, and do not have a clanking sound, and the vehicle is 150,000 miles[2014 equinox ecotec] am I good to drive for now at least? I bought this thing with 140k on it, probably a dumb decision in retrospect. Have already replaced cat converter and have put a fair amount of cash into it for maintenance. It has a smog pump code on but that's it. I checked out the carfax and I am not sure if this vehicle has had a timing belt change or not. If it hasn't, then obviously it's been due but..

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Really depends were your getting parts and what all needs to be replaced. Prices vary. Cheapest route would be replace chain and guides only, or get the master kit that has all timing components, water pump, VVT solenoids, Phasers, accessory belt and tensioner. Don't know labor cost.

    I broke the upper bolt holding the black guide for the timing chain. Will i be ok

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a problem, use Melling 5499GMB or Dorman 917-954. These are designed as a repair (in case the bolt breaks or timing chain takes it out) or an upgrade to the timing chain guide. Its a 2 in 1 access plug that has a stud made on the end of it to hold the black timing chain guide. The upper bolt behind the access plug isn't needed if you use it. Did it break smooth off or did it leave some bolt sticking out?

  • @robertovilla5079
    @robertovilla5079 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Where did you buy the timming kit?

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      All the parts for the timing chain and fuel pump install came from Rock Auto. First time I ever used them and will use them again they beat everyone's price. Only problem is they don't move parts from one warehouse to another warehouse and then box them at the warehouse closest to you. If you order 4 parts that are in 4 different warehouses, then you pay 4 shipping charges, because they ship out from those individual warehouses. Luckily all the parts I ordered were at and shipped from one warehouse.

    Is it necessary to replace the balance chain kit?

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't have to. But if one of the guides is cracked & wore, or the tensioner is not doing its job it may cause a problem. Balance chain also turns the water pump if something goes wrong it will run hot.

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not for sure if you can put the chain on the cam sprocket without it being un-bolted from the end of the cam. Usually have to hold on to the cam sprocket and push the teeth up into the chain & line up timing mark, then bolt it to the cam. Unless the chain maybe too short, count the links on the old one, and see if it's the same as the new chain.

      In a equinox its no problem. This one was done sitting on the ground with the front passenger side tire & wheel removed. Place 2 jack stands under the front frame to support it. I put a jack (lay a block of wood on top of the jack) under the motor to support it, also to move it up and down a little to remove the motor mounts and bolts that are in the way of the timing cover.

    • @TwistedSag15
      @TwistedSag15 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So don't jack up on the engine/tranny just the motor mounts? Sorry, my wifes Equinox has this issue as well and would rather not throw away 2k for a job i can do in under a week.

    • @hp_outdoors
      @hp_outdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Put a piece of plywood or block of wood on the jack and support the engine under the cast oil pan. Mostly just supporting or moving the motor a little so you can get the weight off the motor mount on the passenger fender. There are 2-3 other motor mounts supporting the engine/trans still attached.
