Fun fact: V's giggle when he was giving his introduction speech wasn't scripted. Hugo accidentally and genuinely did it but the directors decided to leave it in cause they felt it added silliness or craziness to the character.

A correction: V and Watchmen had different graphic artists; they have in common legendary writer Alan Moore. Moore also created From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and re-created The Swamp Thing. All of the above have suffered inadequate adaptations, with in my opinion only V eclipsing the original. His graphic novels are well worth one's time.

It’s a great moment. She was ultimately remorseful for what she’d done, unlike the others on V’s hit-list. She actually got her hands dirty, unlike Prothero, the Vicar, MacReady, or the Chancellor. V ended her peacefully, and compassionately in his way.

Yes and it's an important scene displaying that V is not a hero. He is not handing out justice here, he's sentencing her to die even though she shows remorse for her actions, hence the Vendetta. The other killings can be viewed as a victim getting his comeuppance on his abusers but not this one. Beautifully acted by both of them.

@@Necromorbus89 this is what i've always said about the movie version of V. he talks a lot about justice and rising up against fascist oppressors. but he doesn't really care about these things. he's not an idealist. he just wants revenge. these people hurt him, so he wants to destroy them. not just kill them, but destroy everything they stand for. he wants to destroy their ideology, not because their ideology is wrong, but just because they hurt him. so when he preaches to the people about these democratic ideals, it's just a means to an end for him. he doesn't care about freeing the people, it just helps him hurt the ones who hurt him
very different from the comic version of V, who not only has that desire for revenge, but also a genuine belief in anarchy. he doesn't try to unite the people against their oppressors, he tries to tear down society itself

November 5th is a British thing, Nick! For us, it's Bonfire Night, aka Guy Fawkes Night - it marks when Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up Parliament with gunpowder in 1605. The man being hung at the start of the movie was a flashback to his execution, and the style of V's mask is in the style of the portraits of him. We literally burn effigies of Guy Fawkes every year on 5th November to this day, to never forget the Gunpowder Plot. Anyway, great reaction as always! Love this movie.

    • @Aeroldoth3
      @Aeroldoth3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

What is the purpose of burning effigies? Is it to condemn or memorialize him? Given how common, if not universal, anti-govermental sentiment seems to be around the world, it seems odd to me to "never forget" when a blow for the common man _failed._

@@Aeroldoth3 Well it’s more to memorialise his failure to kill the King. Fawkes was a Catholic, part of a plot to try and destabilise the Protestant monarchy. That a load of anarchist causes use him as a symbol today is kind of nonsensical in context, but the sentiment of ‘remove an unjust status quo through violence’ is why. Bonfire Night celebrates the failure of this (‘England prevails’!) It’s also an excuse for fireworks and effigy burning fun, which is actually more in line with our old pagan traditions, ironically.

November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night, a British holiday commemorating the date in 1605 that a group of conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament by planting a large cache of gunpowder in an underground room beneath the building. They failed when someone ratted them out to authorities. Guy Fawkes was one of the conspirators and was apprehended in the early morning hours on Nov. 5th while keeping watch over the gunpowder. Though the other conspirators were also captured and executed, Fawkes is most identified with the plot and the date. Each year on Nov. 5th, the British people burn effigies of Fawkes in bonfires, and fireworks shows are held in a patriotic celebration similar to America's Fourth of July. The mask V wears is modeled on the masks that bear Fawkes' likeness which are commonly worn or placed on the effigies.

@@glennwelsh9784 They may share fireworks, but I've always considered the 4th and 5th polar opposites.
The 4th celebrating freedom and essentially the ability to have an armed revolution if need be.
The 5th initiated by a government that was oppressive enough to cause people to want to blow up Parliament as a means of showing the subjects what will happen to them if they try to revolt.
IMO, it is an example of why people from the UK and US just can't understand each other on some subjects. It is just deeply rooted in the way of thinking.
Fun fact: The colonies "outlawed" the celebration of the 5th in 1775 and basically said, "It will be replaced with another holiday when the time is right." Not an exact quote, but it's the jist of what I remember reading. I don't think there was any punishment for it, it just wasn't officially observed anymore. I would suspect celebrating it at that time could lead to some conflict though.

I haven't read the full graphic novel this was based on, but my interpretation of V's destroying his mask at Evey's leaving and his anguish is that, at least part of him wishes he could have a romantic relationship (and thus a normal human one) with Evey, but he's also essentially given himself over to being and becoming this abstract persona of V. Part of his character isn't just that we don't know what he was like as a person prior to the Larkhill experiments. We learn nothing of his background, his family, his life, his story, nor do we ever really find out afterward. As he described, in order to become unkillable, he had to become an idea, an abstract. Within the story, it's that abstract idea that Evey seems to fall in love with. But he can't fall in love without becoming a person again, and perhaps that's just another one of the many things V considers this fascist government to have taken from him.

I'd read somewhere (though can't find it now) that this was a point of contention with an earlier actor who'd been cast to play V prior to Weaving, that the director required the actor's face to never be shown (and lead actors don't tend to like that, partly for being able to express, partly for less recognition and becoming essentially a voice/movement performance).
Do I know that was the reason? No, but it sounds plausible given how rare it is for lead actors (compare to the Stallone vs. Urban Judge Dredd films). The audience is meant to never know what V once was or what he looked like. (And that can certainly be a significant constraint to have to communicate one's performance around, though I think Weaving did a great job.)

My romantic side also wanted V to choose Evey, but I think V always knew he must die. Not only because he was too consumed by his desire for revenge (like the allusion Evey made to feeling sorry for Mercedes) but also, because in the domino scene, with him staring at the sole piece left standing, he understood that once the current British government was toppled, people would look to him as a symbol of this new movement, and that was not what he wanted. His purpose was fulfilled, he got his vengeance against those that tortured him and stripped him of his previous life, and he gave the people of the U.K. a chance to free themselves from a tyrannical leader and try to start over. No matter how much he loved Evey, he fulfilled his goal, and he could rest. For him it was over.

The Film was based on a Graphic Novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd that was made under the Vertigo banner, basically a branch of DC Comics that also included "Hellblazer"(Which "Constantine" was based on),"The Sandman"(Which Netflix is now adapting along with an Amazon Audible audiobook both approved and produced by original creator Neil Gaiman who was also the model for Ultimate Loki,a fact he was flattered by as he admitted Loki was always his favourite Norse God),"Watchmen"(Adapted into a controversial Zack Snyder Film the same year this film was released, then adapted into an equally controversial HBO miniseries) and "Lucifer"(Which was adapted into a short-lived Fox procedural which by fan demand was revived on Netflix)that dealt with more mature, politically charged and realistic stories than DC`s main line allowed at the time. The graphic novel was made as an indictment of the then newly-elected Thatcher Government in the U.K. and the fascistic undercurrent of the country they enabled. V in the Graphic Novel was a far more sneaky, morally ambiguous character. Also, there was far less focus on action and far more on the betrayals, egos and political intrigue within a fascist government that ultimately lead to its inevitable downfall which is shown in The Film but in a far less nuanced and more "consumer-friendly" way than the outspokenly anti-corporate,anti-oligarchical Alan Moore would prefer.Additionally in the Graphic Novel, the themes of anarchism vs. fascism were more explicit and grounded in real-life political theory(Which isn`t surprising since Moore is an anarchist IRL and Lloyd is a Marxist),Evey was a 19-year-old prostitute, not a journalist and although she did succeed V and adopt his philosophy, mask and cause there was no romantic interest between them as The Film depicts for obvious reasons,Creedy was made up for The Film to give V a physical opponent and archetypal fascist enforcer which wasn`t really there in the Graphic Novel aside from the Fingermen but they were all basically rapey blackshirt idiots ,Finch was a pill addict and never turned against The Government, indeed he died killing V and hallucinated V taunting him in an opium frenzy, the occult themes were more explicit as well, the Chancellor was a self-hating homosexual named Adam Susan who was obsessed with his surveillance computer Fate(Which was replaced in The Film with CCTV cameras which along with the casting of John Hurt(R.I.P.) as the now-renamed Chancellor Adam Sutler because the Nazi allegory wasn`t obvious enough apparently, add to the 1984 vibes.)Indeed, the only human love story in the Graphic Novel was between the lesbian women, one of whom`s diary Evey finds in V`s study.

Hey Nick, not a spoiler, just context: This movie came out early 2000s during the Bush administration, and it was seen as a subtextual criticism of his policies **eye roll**. In any case, people also find a lot of parallels in 2020 and today as well. This was written & directed by the Wachowski siblings, same folks who made The Matrix and Speed Racer (both good movies - one excellent, one underrated). The relationship between V and Evey - which you touched upon - becomes even more intriguing when you think about the fact that the Wachowskis were born biological men but have since fully transitioned as women. It's a recurring theme in their work when you see tropes like "masks" in this movie or searching for one's identity etc.

@@nickflix8657 Okay, I am going to make a suggestion, and some folks might disagree, but I need to vouch for it heavily as a fan of George Lucas' Star Wars trying to minimize the toxicity that often creeps up from the worst of fandom.
If you are watching Star Wars for the very first time, the best viewing order for very-first-timers is IV-V-I-II-III-VI. There are several reasons for this.
      1. You still want to start with IV, the first one ever made, because it is the first and you want to be able to appreciate it without comparing it to the others.
      2. Likewise, V has reveals that I-III spoil, and the impact will be much greater if you view V first.
      3. However, VI is a movie that doesn't gain its true weight and power without the context of I-III as the ending of Lucas' Saga.
      4. III, without spoiling, can be a little bit of a downer as the main conflict in IV has to pick up from it, so you don't necessarily want to end it there like you would on order of release.
Therefore, watching I-III as an extended flashback between V and VI is the best way to keep the weight and surprises fresh for each movie. After first viewing, you can rewatch in whatever order you like (I prefer Episode order myself).
Also, many people will advocate for different versions, but I feel you need to watch the latest versions. First because they're the most easily available, second because they connect into each other better. Even though the added bits in IV-VI may not always be the best executed, the concepts they address make the whole better.
And after that, what you do with the Expanded Universe (which is what I consider everything without George Lucas' direct oversight even if Disney says otherwise) is your business. I don't think any of it fully gets what George was doing with his 6, but some come closer than others (such as anything involving Dave Filoni, who is the closest thing to a Lucas Protege in the EU).

Natalie Portman was also Padme Amadela from the Star Wars Prequels. I love this film, but then again I really enjoy vigilante revenge films like The Boondock Saints which I recommend. Also if the dictator leader seems familiar that’s because it is John Hurt who dies in films 99% of the time. The guy who played V is Hugo Weaving who was Agent Smith in the Matrix Films.
Guy Fawkes was a real man who attempted to blow up Parliament on November 5th, 1605 only to be stopped. The whole point of the story is to fight against dictator type governments like the Nazis and you see them try to control the story like saying at the beginning of the film how The bailey’s destruction was planned.

To clear thing up for our non British friends (this is going to be long):
The 5th of November 1605, a terrorist group planted gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament in London (this is like Congress) to blow up the King of England. Guards on patrol found a man (just a patsy really) at the scene of the crime, guarding the gunpowder. This man was Guido Fawkes (Guy for short). The assassination attempt was foiled and Guy Fawkes was publicly hung, drawn and quartered (this is the opening scene of the film). The King introduced a national day of remembrance, to celebrate the foiling of his assassination. This day is still celebrated today in the UK. There is a proem that every school kid learns:
“Remember remember, the 5th of November, gunpowder treason and plot. I should see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.”
This is a reminder to the public, of what happens to terrorists who try to take down the king. Each year in the UK, we build effigies of Guy Fawkes and throw him on a bonfire. The 5th of November is also called “Bonfire Night”. We light fireworks and generally get drunk and have a good old knees up. It’s great for kids to stay up late, light fire works and burn things on a massive bonfire. This “Remembrance Day” is a celebration of the failed terrorist attempt, so it is anti Guy Fawkes. 400 years ago, the news was what the King said it was. In this movie, V is the terrorist, in the same way as Guy Fawkes was 400 years ago, trying to take down a tyrannical government. The main message of the film is, when is terrorism the right course of action? Was it 400 years ago in England to take down the King? Was it right for V to take down the ruling government of the day? Who are the terrorists in today’s world, Al-Quieda, Isis? It’s all subjective. Who is right and who is wrong. Is your government right or are the people right. Finding that balance between the two is what’s makes us civilised. When either party oversteps the mark, what is an adequate response? This film is designed to make you think, don’t just be a sheep, but don’t become radicalised either. Society is a mix of all people, with different views, different beliefs, different cultures, different lives. There are a lot of similarities depicted in this film to that of Nazi Germany. The logo, the camps where people are experimented on, the policing style, the propaganda, anyone “different” is rounded up and killed. How many steps are we today from a similar style of government taking over. Look at the genocide that still goes on in the world today. I’m lucky that in the UK this is a long way off. America, I feel sorry for you, you have already started walking down this path. The Wachowski brothers (now sisters) did a fantastic job with this film. Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman also did a fanatic job. It’s hard to recall such a great film (non-animated) where you don’t even see the lead actor’s face, but Hugo’s voice is amazing. Anyway, rant over, enjoy. I told you this was long.

Thank you that Sam. Actually I've known about that for a while. Guy Fawkes day was always noted on calendars here across the pond, and with such an unusual name my curiosity got the best me back in the early 70s. But most everyone I've ever known knew nothing about it. It has not been on calendars in recent years unless I missed one. I can see why Fawkes was generally hated long ago, but what of today? I seem to recall news stories 10, 15 years ago maybe where they covered Bonfire Night for us to see all of you having a blast! It looked fun and I wanted be there!! LOL! I also recall some poll or summing up interviews of the man and woman on the street in general seeming to show Britons were half and half (maybe) on Fawkes the traitor, or Fawkes the legend. And as much fun as they were having it seemed nobody cared what the other thought! So is he still regarded and scoundrel or something else? Also, was it upsetting to you guys to see Parliament blown up? I know it's important for the story, excitement to compel the people to form a new government, and the spectacular climax, but really... I hated to see that beautiful old building blown down though. This movie impressed many of us here so much that for around 10 years after it came out several friends and I would gather every Nov 5th to watch without fail. And we would party too! Oh, and don't sweat it. I've typed longer ones. ✌️😎

Both the graphic novel and film contrast the different Governmental bodies at the point of their releases, The Graphic Novel takes a jab and the Margret Thatcher's reign in England since the author Allen Moore was and still is a supporter of Anarchy and Revolution and the Films style takes a jab at the Bush Administration. In fact, Allen Moore hated the film but never saw it and demanded his name was taken from the credits. when he read the script he was quoted saying "It was bloody rubbish". He's known for hating adaptations of his work without giving it a chance, a lot of his films have been adapted such as Watchmen, From Hell (about Jack the Ripper), and even Constantine which was based on the comic series Hellblazer that he wrote.

To be fair, the Watchmen-adaptation was really bad. Rorschach in the comic was just a sad, smelling caricature of objectivist ideology (Ayn Rand ect. ). Zack Synder is maybe not exactly right-wing or something, but he sure loves Ayn Rand, so he made the character a lot more appealing in the movie and now all the incels and Trump-fanboys see Rorschach as this edgy hero.

V couldn’t just give up his entire plan for Evey, that’s why he left her in the train station.
