Melattur Veerabhadrayyah (1739-1763) , who was the guru of Ramaswami Dikshithar, is considered to be the earliest composer of Thillana and is hence respectfully called the “Thillana Margadarshi”. The first Thillana composed by him, is not traceable now, but its reference is found in the book “Tanjore as a seat of music” by Dr. Seeta.
Another point is that nice Thillanas have been created by many other great composers.
Some of the illustrious exponents are
Swathi Tirunal, Tanjore Quartette (Ponniah, Chinnaiah, Sivanandam & Vadivelu), Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer, Oothukkadu Venkatasubbaier, Ammachatram Kannuswami Pillai, Patnam Subramanya Iyer, Pallavi Seshaiyer, Mysore Sadashiva Rao, Veena Seshanna, Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar, Muthiah Bhagavathar, Papanasam Sivan, Mysore Vasudevachar, Lalgudi G. Jayaraman , Maharajapuram Santhanam, M. Balamuralikrishna, Ravikiran and others.

Lovely rendition of Dhanashree Thillana, I have seen many times this thillana being sung in Barathanatyam performances but nothing sounded so beautiful as Prakash's modern twist to this age old Thillana piece. Amazing rendition of the Swaras, Brugas, Alankara and the Arohana & Awarohana notes.
