    Disclaimer: That extra jittery RF footage comes activated like that by design after enabling the RF settings within the shader, TH-cam compression may also play a role in making it look even MORE jumpy when in motion especially on dithered areas, the composite footage doesn't look as jittery.
    Man what a good day this is turning out to be, first guest.r posted up a new shader update and now this amazing video. RetroCrisis you did it again my man, that was killer how you showed that zoom in with the 4 different video boxes showing off the crt masks in perfect clarity. Also loved that nod to Mega Man X4 Sega Saturn footage showcasing exactly what those s-video presets are for, it's pretty much my description page about it in motion. I hope you all enjoy this latest update, this was all made and put together by retro gamers for retro gamers.

      Like always, love the shaders you work on and showcase in your channel. Wanted to ask, are these shaders too demanding? I'm asking because I have a Powkiddy RGB30 on the way to me, and one thing on my list was to try some of these amazing shaders.
      The screen on the RGB30 is 1:1 AR 720x720, so hopefully the 1080 versions work?

    One would think a manufacturer would release a flat display with the equivalent amount of pixels as a CRT to be used exclusively and only for retro gaming only, they’d be making a killing on them. That’s why I still keep an old CRT and a 720p flat screen for retro, 720 looks very good given the amount of less density it has, and well CRT is just king.. just wishing it never dies Lol.

  • @nathanddrews
    @nathanddrews 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    These are pretty good, but I think that the strobing and rainbow effects are exaggerated quite a bit compared to real hardware. Could also be the capture not representing it properly. I wish I had time to tinker with all these awesome shaders.

    • @RetroCrisis
      @RetroCrisis  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The capture is more or less 1:1 with how the shader looks in action. Give it a go when you get a chance

    • @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867
      @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Definitely give them a spin. There's a lot going on in the composite/rf presets with all the artifacting and rainbows etc. so it was probably the effects doing that to the capture. It's definitely not as jittery in game.

      @@nathanddrews Good ol TH-cam compression for you. I remember RetroCrisis showing me footage he was working on before even uploading and it wasn't extra jumpy like that so yeah I'm gonna blame TH-cam for that one. Besides that RF is a little more "jittery" by design. Once I activated the RF setting it makes everything on the screen with dithering look like an acid trip lol

    • @leftyfourguns
      @leftyfourguns 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have to agree. They make it look more like a VHS tape than a Genesis on a CRT to me. The S-Video footage looks great though

  • @gorofujita5767
    @gorofujita5767 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Damn, that Sonic looks so good! Just like I remember: No visible pixelization in the curvature of his quills. Plus, his mouth and arms have lighter highlights, and a subtle but very vivid "vibration" (strobbing?) to the whole screen, like CRTs do.
    Any chance this shader will be ported to Reshade?? These days that is becoming more and more important, as retro games are very abundant in Steam (like Sonic Mania)

    • @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867
      @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you for the compliment. For Sonic and all the other ntsc composite presets I tried to make sure sprites looked smooth but still sharp at the same time if that makes any sense. I didn't want a severly blurry picture yet it's still blurred enough to do all the proper dithering effects. And I do plan to bring these to Reshade one day, just gotta learn the program first.

    • @gorofujita5767
      @gorofujita5767 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 The "smooth but sharp" look is how things looked in my 15inch Mitsubishi TV
      The inherent compactness of the TV also made scanlines virtually invisible at a 2 meter distance, and the brilliance of the display made you naturally stay away far enough that you also didn't notice much of a shadowmask -- other than perhaps a pleasant barely noticeable "texture" of sorts in single-color backgrounds
      In order to achieve that "sharp but smooth" look, I often combine sharpen, gaussian blur and (heavily tweaked) CRT Royale.
      But your results vastly surpass my amateur-ish efforts in terms of reproducing the "CRT Magic". I hope you continue improving and releasing versions of your shaders

    • @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867
      @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gorofujita5767 Man I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you're enjoying the pack. I use to play Sega Saturn (I'm a Saturn fanboy for life) on a 27 inch aperture grille Toshiba tv in the 90's, I collected almost every Capcom import by the time Saturn discontinued then moved on to the Dreamcast. I remember always playing mostly at night with the lights off, the tv would always illuminate my room with bright vivid colors and I wanted to recreate that feeling so my aim was simply to make presets that were "bright, vivid and colorful" and this current pack is where I've come to so far.

    • @gorofujita5767
      @gorofujita5767 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 Damn, I am also a SEGA enjoyer, with a bias in favor of the Saturn as one of the most **interesting** consoles ever made. The Saturn had so many unique games, that took advantage of its strong 2D capabilities. Heck, even its way of rendering 3D using quads would produce excellent results (I much prefer the rougher, darker look of TR1 on the Saturn compared to the PS1)
      The usage of dithering was also abundant in the Saturn, as a less hardware intensive way to draw shadows and certain semi-transparent effects. Games like Sonic R or Robot Pit are abundant with that effect.
      It is because of the Saturn (and possibly my trusted TV I had at the time) that I am very much interested in CRT shaders. For a long while I wasn't satisfied with the way CTR shaders focused on scanlines. My TV produced none of that non-sense. I mean, the scanlines were still there and visible.... if you pressed your entire face and eyeballs against the screen. Other than that, the. subjective effect was a very clear, pristine image, with lots of color pop, great motion resolution, and no pixelization whatsoever. Anti-aliasing before anti-aliasing was cool.
      I've been pursuing ways of subjectively replicating this picture quality on my PC, constantly shifting between shaders (some CRT inspired, others more in line with ScaleFX -- because yes, what I _perceived_ in real TVs was a sharp well defined picture quality)
      And I'm happy to report your shaders are some of the best I've seen thus far, and are an essential part of my journey into recreating the CRT experience without a CRT.

    • @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867
      @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gorofujita5767Yeah the Saturn was such a underrated powerhouse along with my beloved Dreamcast.
      I think the thing with some shaders and some people that use them is that they're trying to achieve that BVM look. I've never gamed on such a display and would never want to, those extra thick scanlines turn me off and I didn't grow up playing that way.
      I'm happy that my presets are helping you along the way, I'm also interested in seeing what you are/were working on with your crt shader tweaking. Maybe sometime you can post up some of your work in the Libretro forum, the more crt shader variations to choose from the better I always say.

    5:22 Holy cow I mean these games were designed to run on everyone's cheap old CRT telly but this is mind blowing actually. To think that the colours in the image on the right may have been exactly how it was supposed to look - and then modern digtal screens came along and the effect was totally lost.

    • @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867
      @sonkunhyperspinretroarch4867 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a cool effect indeed. I've noticed some people don't like that effect as well so I've put out another update after this video was put up that includes another plain standard composite preset that doesn't have that rainbow effect at all.

    Hey Retro Crisis, I just got a Steam Deck last week and in a weird coincidence of you uploading this video I'm literally in the process of setting up RetroArch with shaders. If you could only pick one CRT Shader plugin for fifth generation consoles and backwards, what would you suggest?

      Guys, false alarm, I've noticed that LCD/LED monitors with conventional screen can burn if you use CRT shaders too much time and it can be fixed only searching fixes googling it
      Anyway, this may be the best CRT shaders for 1080p screens
