When it comes to Japanese PC's the Sharp X68000 reigns supreme in retro gaming enthusiasts minds...but the MSX2 is a really fun retrogaming piece of hardware that runs PERFECTLY on MiSTer FPGA and you should def play it...so let me show you how!
Big thanks to Vampier for providing me some additional insight and captures as he is probably the biggest MSX 2 fan there is!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghu, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerhold, Adrien Sebbane,
Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Ben Parfitt, Holger Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty, Richard S, Eric Gutt and Robert Alger!
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about MSX core for MiSTer FPGA. Technically it supports all MSX variants as there is the MSX, the MSX 2, the MSX2+....it really gets confusing as to how many variants there are of this pc gaming giant! But they all run in FPGA amazingly...so I will show you how to set it up and what games you should be playing including Castlevania, the original Metal Gear games BEFORE Metal Gear Solid on PS1, etc etc!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

The link you provided is not for sofarun. There's a massive gap of information that's missing here. The sofarun website has a zip file you can download, but the MSX core only reads .vhd files. But even when you mount a .vhd filethere' no command prompt. So, there's a giant gap of information missing between downloading the sofarun .zip file and somehow getting a command prompt on screen for the MSX core.

Great video, thank you. Is the core 240p only or do games run over a range of resolutions? Aleste 2 didn’t render on my 240p monitor but Castlevania (Vampire Killer) did.
Regarding Vampire Killer; it runs way too fast at the core/hd’s default speed, but even at normal speed it seems too fast. I know I need to read up on the core, but these are just two quick initial observations (haven’t tried this core before).

Depends on if you use analog or hdmi. But it’ll run at basically any output you pick

Great feature, because having owned an MSX and having a mate who had one back in the 80s, it's a computer that I really like and nostalgic for. I was wondering the VHD I've been using, not everything works, in MSX 1, Cassette /R-OMs. All the AAA "Kon-ami" games work fine though. For instance Boulder Dash on Cassette or R-OM you might get a title screen and then a black screen. Any work arounds for these? I did hear a stand-alone MSX1 core was being developed but have not heard any more about it? Thanks for featuring Vampire Killer on this too.
Also enable 50hz in the settings, for the people like me who grew up in the UK and had the PAL Toshiba HX-10. It will make Nemesis run at the "correct" speed !? Nemesis cheat - press F1 and type HYPER for full power up :)

the core gives a nice taste of msx gaming, but people will never get to play with all the insane add-ons made for the actual computers
beyond flash carts, you have carts that allow audio playback from more advanced systems like neo geo
plus a massive cart that allows you to play sms games with fm sound intact
you can get slot expanders to allow more carts to be inserted at one time
some software even supports midi music using external modules like the mt-32
part of the joy of msx is seeing all the hardware variations, with the "turbo r" being the pinnacle

    • @VideoGameEsoterica
      @VideoGameEsoterica  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
