A time-lapse after planting 10,000 crocuses in a lawn

  • A time-lapse of the second year of our crocus lawn!
    In 2021, we planted over 10,000 crocuses in our backyard in Zone 5b. All bulbs were planted 8-12 cm deep, around 15-20 cm apart. We used a tilling / drain shovel to make slots in the lawn and pushed the bulbs in by hand. It took around 16 hours to plant the entire lawn. We avoid walking on the lawn from when the ground thaws in the spring until they are done flowering and then wait until the end of May to cut the grass. For every one bulb planted in 2021, there were 1-2 flowers in 2022 and 2-5 flowers from each bulb originally planted. They do not self seed so they will stay contained to the lawn, hopefully for the next few decades!

    How do you keep grass in between from growing?

    • @TravisCranmer
      @TravisCranmer  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The crocuses bloom in mid April as soon as the snow melts and the grass does not start growing until after the crocuses are finished flowering.

      @@TravisCranmer Ah. Our first time to cut grass this year was the second week of April. But I can see what you mean. It will be with the snow. That will be gorgeous.

    Will they get thicker as the years go? Trying to build a care free flower garden with spring bulbs and perrenial fall blossoming shrubs.
    Would they benefit my vegetable garden?

      They should divide and fill in the gaps a little more every year.
      I would avoid planting them in the vegetable garden as the leaves will still be around when you are trying to plant vegetables in the spring.
