Photo Deconstruction: Porcelain Skin Beauty Look

  • Today, I want to share how I create a beautiful porcelain skin look in my images using a mixture of lighting, makeup and color grading. When I shoot beauty, I love extremes. I love high contrast, black and white. I love supersaturated colors. I love really pale skin, really dark skin. If you look at a lot of my work, you'll see that I often have this pure white, perfectly smooth porcelain skin effect. People always wonder how much is achieved and camera how much is achieved in Photoshop, so I’d like to share with you my tips on that today.
The image shown in the video was achieved with two lights. The main light is a Magnum Reflector, which is a hard light modifier, meaning that it gives kind of a sunny light effect. The reflector creates really crisp highlights and really defined shadows. The idea was that I was going to be playing with some blue eye makeup, pure white skin and a little bit of blue gel to the shadows.
I wanted to introduce some blue into the scene and that's where a second light source comes in. I'm using a Zoom Reflector, just a silver dish with a blue gel on it. Now because the Magnum Reflector is so high up, what it does is it puts shadows in the eyes and underneath the nose and chin and so that second light source fills in the shadows with blue, so underneath the eyes, underneath the chin and so forth.
    Camera settings:
I was shooting with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a 180mm macro lens, which allowed me to crop in so tightly that the only things in my frame were the eyes, part of the nose and the lips. I was shooting at F11 to give me enough focus to have both the lips and the eyes and focus.
Whenever I shoot in the studio, I'm always shooting tethered and the reason for that is so I can check the frames that I'm getting, check the focus and I can also do a bit of color grading. That means messing with the saturation and the white balance and the contrast and all of those things so I can see how much I can push and pull out of the file.
The straight out of camera shot got me close, but not entirely how I envisioned it. I wanted a truly porcelain like skin with the kiss of blue color. I began to tinker in Capture One to see how much I could get out of the raw file itself.
There were a few things I could do here. The first is overexposing so that the skin is overly bright.
The second is to desaturate the skin tones that contain the red, yellow and oranges, so that the skin will become a little bit more pure white. However when I do the latter the picture usually becomes a little bit flat, so to counteract that, I can increase the contrast to give it a little bit more life back into the image.
    Post Processing:
When going for this type of look you’re bound to have to do some post processing, unless your subject has perfect skin.
While I typically like to emphasize skin texture in my photos, for this concept it doesn’t really add to the image. I opted to remove some of the blemishes, freckles, and uneven skin texture in Photoshop using a combination of frequency separation, local dodging and burning, patch tool, just several of our common retouching tools.
Taking a look at each one of these steps, it's a combination of things. It's not one thing, part of it's using the pale makeup and the pale model. Part of it is the lighting that I've chosen. Part of it is achieved through post-processing. And then, of course, finishing it off at the end with a little bit of Photoshop. It's many little contributions along the creative process.

Thank you Lindsay, I love your deconstruction videos - it’s informative, interesting and perfect amount of time. Do you have (or would you consider doing) a video on the current equipment you use? I know equipment is a personal choice these days but at this stage it’s just as much about ease of use as it is about function. I’d love to see what gear you love these days, even favorite light stands, modifiers, etc..

Hi Dan. I generally talk about what gear I use in every video, so while it's not all in one central location, each video should give you an idea of what I use. This also might be a useful resource for you: invite.lindsayadlerphotography.com/10-studio-lighting-questions-webinar/

Hi Lindsay, As you know I really like your work and immensely enjoy and appreciate your educational videos. That said, I hope you don't mind my saying not a fan of this particular image. IMHO, the skin looked blown out instead of pure white or porcelain. Also, once again, especially since you said in the email announcing this video series, "This is a neat setup you can do right at home", could you demonstrate this concept using equipment us home studio types with lesser resources (equipment) would have available such as what I mentioned in the comments for the 1st video? Thank you and stay safe.

Hi George. No worries, not everyone has to like everything. As for being able to do it at home... I made that comment because many people have converted their homes into studios because of the recent quarantine, so I simply mean't this is something you can easily do anywhere. The setup itself is simple. I outlined the setup in the video so it should be pretty self explanatory. :)

Love it! Just curious, what did you use for the "liquid" in the eye? Glycerin?
