I was a technologies Manager at Paramount studios for 25 years. of course, there days they have no still photo Dept........but the pictures of the old starts still line the hallways across the lot. And it's true....not too many have the "Paramount Lighting" look.....
I like your take on shooting 30s 40s movie studio look. I was lucky to learn from the absolute master of Hollywood glamour George Hurrell. He taught me lighting, how to use my Deardorff 8x10 and even how to make soft focus filters. Lindsay thanks again and keep sharing the knowledge.

It took a couple of years for him to open up. In 1980 Brooke Shields did a movie called The Blue Lagoon and I think it was Columbia Pictures wanted George to do a retro shoot and he finally agreed and ask me to assist him. What a treat that was.

Had chatted with him for years on camera issues. Had no idea who he was it was just someone to talk about issues with. 4 years later I found out who it was. Pretty awesome. Still friends.
That's an excellent tutorial that produced great results Lindsay! It took me back to my days at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Like Hurrell often did, we used Fresnel cine lights (Baby and Junior) for still lighting, shooting on 4x5 film. For this type of work, we'd slightly overexpose and overdevelop to help smooth the skin. I like how you emphasized the holistic concept of lighting, angle, wardrobe, makeup, hair. I see lots of attempts at this type of photography where the supporting elements are missed.
So well explained and like that Lindsay showed how much could be achieved with a two light set up despite Hollywood lighting often using multiple lights. A good video.
This was (another!) super solid tutorial. I loved the explanation of what you did and why. So many photographers get a little bit confused when it comes to the properties of light(ing), but your explanation shouldn't leave any questions open. Excellent job!
If knowing the final image will be in B&W, one option for removing facial imperfections, especially if a portrait of an older woman, it is possible to use baby power on the face. Darken the eye make-up and dark colored clothing adding contrast. My choice for a center light has been either a Mola 28 inch silver refector with a grid or a silver umbrella. With lighting on center usually I don't use a background light with white paper. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.

Lindsay, great video! I liked the detail tips and clarified descriptions like the disappearing catchlights, the height of the Mag Reflector vs a Soft Box, the distinction of the nose shadow in Paramount style vs classic Hollywood style, and other tidbits. Thank you for sharing this.

Is this satisfactory to use ? (2) I don't think a reflector such as the Westcott 45° Deep Focus Reflector is useful in achieving this look or will it ? (3) Last, what diameter reflector is needed to achieve this look ? Thanks !!
"Butterfly lighting" was introduced and made famous by the Austrian-American director Joseph von Sternberg, especially in his movie "Shanghai Express" with Marlene Dietrich. Later on, they started calling it "Paramount lighting" to evoke the impression, that it was kind of an American invention...as usual. Hence, it is by no means a "Hollywood look", but rather a "UFA look", invented in Potsdam-Babelsberg near Berlin, Germany.

Honestly every person is different. Yes, I have definitely don't this with East Asian faces before. But it depends. sorry for the lack of clarity!
I don't know why Butterfly Lighting is called that unless there's a shape of butterfly that I haven't seen yet.
There are a couple famous ones from 'back in the day', but not too many since the angle of light gets really high.
