@@SinclairLore 37:13 Having performed wolf skip, (it let me explore areas out of sequence and rewind time using the Oedon chapel doorway after the blood moon) I can confirm Sophie's supposition concerning the arrival of amygdalae, I found none dangling from the buildings when exploring the Yahar-Gul rooftops in the early evening.
I audibly went woah when u talked abt how rom is actually on an altar at the altar of despair, and that it’s the altar that brings Annalise back to life, not the rom corpse. Who would’ve thought that after all these years I would still able to learn something new about one of my favorite games from one of my favorite podcasts, thanks for everything guys :)
This video was just recommended through youtube and this is genuinely such a good listen/watch, I'm glad I've found the channel and am excited to get into more episodes!
Thank you guys for still making content about BB after all this time. To me there are 5 last mayor mysteries left in bloodborne: - whats up with Brador - whats up with the creepy orphanage - why is the lecture hall in the nightmare - moon presence motivations - amygdalas role
Also, when Rom was reborn as a Great One (sorta) but became vacuous, was that the still birth of her brain? Like Mensis meeting Mergo, but they became vacuous, unable to ascend? Human Rom had audience with Kos, she almost ascended but failed = vacuous. Which now brings me to another random thought... Master Willem he seems to have lost most of his mind once we find him.... unable speak and weak.... If he suffered the malady of Eldritch encounters, which great one would it have been? Ebrietas?
The problem here is that unlike Rom, the Brain of Mensis was "a legitimate great one." So they did ascend (assuming the Brain of Mensis is what happened to all the Mensis scholars, Father than something they captured and were killed by).
That the Altar of Despair is something Rom's corpse sits on, rather than the corpse itself, is a detail that makes so much sense but that I never realized! I also think that, like you were pointing out, Rom's corpse could have been brought their either before the events of the game or in the time-skip between when we kill Rom and wake up. I think it is most likely that they did it in the time skip, just because it seems like Rom's ritual was done after the Red Moon in Old Yharnam in an attempt by Byrgenwerth to keep the Church from doing it again. The Choir could have brought her corpse to the Altar of Despair in a desperate attempt to bring her back to life and keep the Mensis Ritual from continuing.
I think it’s so nuts that you guys don’t have a huge channel. Content is so whacky but always informative and every single guest the podcast has always seem to have great chemistry with Sin and Soph. This channel has been in my top 10 for a year or two now and I don’t regret a second spent watching all these vids lol. Can you two keep doing this forever until I die? Pls and thnk you.
Aw thanks so much for your words. It can get discouraging at times knowing the algorithm doesn't really pick up our content, but the community is amazing
The school of Byrgenwerth seems to value physical transformations, particularly of plant-like bugs. There's the Spiders, Rom, Garden of Eyes (with spider talisman), Brainsucker, & Florescent Flower. That's a lot of bugs, clearly showing the Byrgenwerth was transforming folks into bug forms in hopes of gaining enlightenment. The Healing Church seems to create beasts, the Choir creates Celestial Emissaries, & Mensis creates Winter Lanterns. Even still, scholars are often slugs & spiders. Perhaps the plant-like Amygdala are transformed scholars too? Yharnam City is surrounded by plants; perhaps they were first?
I love you guys, but my only 'gripe' is the amount of notes in videos now... I love hearing you two say something and the other (usually Sophie) burst out in laughter and react sarcastically - I feel like notes take that away. But I might be alone in this and I'm still a loyal patreon, just wanted to say! 😘
I can understand where some people might find the notes frustrating at times but like Sophie said and one of The Other podcasts She was attracted to sins channel Because she took a light-hearted look at bloodborne lore. I think this is a very clever way of showing how serious they are about giving you the lore that you tune in for but also keep in it light hearted And not over bearing. There are some great channels that do lore, but I feel they take themselves too seriously at times. And this is the reason this channel will always be my go to channel on souls lore
Awesome Rom video.... I'm one of the hopeless.... someone that could listen to others talk about Bloodborne 7 years later..... Soph, can you tell Lance McDonald he really, really needs to finish his video about "Upsidedown Byrgenwerth". He teased it a few years ago, boasting about how much content of the University he has to show, hehe.
Something about Rom always struck me as the point of the game where you have to go all in on being a hunter. What I mean by this is that most of the game leading up to Rom has you react to the violence and horror bearing down on you but Rom is different. You go to Rom. Rom doesn't start hostile and when fighting, she fights is very passive and franticly. It feels like you as a hunter have to walk into the Rom fighting wanting to kill her or at the very least the fight tells you that you're supposed to give into the instinct to kill her as your prey. I studied Aikido for a bit and you're always trying to de-escalate fights. You're trying to supposed to learn self control so that you are not to source of escalation of conflicts and with Rom I could feel that she just wanted to be left alone that I was the invader of her world. My first time through the game I was playing with a sense of curiosity and wonder. I kept wondering how I could undo all of the damage and with Rom I realized that I was wrong. The game puts you in Yharnam to destroy it all and with the death of Rom there is no more mistaking the truth. No matter what you were before, now, you are a hunter.
Found this channel through your cameo on the Internet Pitstop, absolutely love the podcasts. Im officially addicted to your channel now and look forwards to all your new content!
Honestly this is the only soulsborne lore stuff I watch/listen to where I basically agree with or am convinced of every conclusion being made. Been a highlight of my last few weeks listening
roms eyes darting around kind of looks like the amygdalas laser attack where the eyes pop out of different holes in a fast pace, maybe if rom's head was larger the eyes would fit inside holes on her head?
It's interesting how rom's design is clearly an iteration upon Primeval demons from demons souls. She's a new born higher being just like them, with the same weird umbilical cord tails. The Primeval demons also don't really fight back and we just slay them for their power
I always thought that Rom was vacuous because she was still really young, relative to a higher being, I mean she’s been a kin of the cosmos for how long, like 10, 15, 20 years? So even with all of that time, it’s still no where near enough for her to adjust. One last thing, I don’t remember from where I know this, but I’m pretty sure Willem was pissed at Rom because she wasn’t communicating with him and shit, and my thoughts about that is that Rom is on such a higher plane of existence, even with how young she is, that she isn’t able to communicate with humans. It’s like you trying to talk to an ant. I don’t know if all of this is correct but thats what I always thought. Also I haven’t watched this podcast in like 3 months and omg this is amazing, thank you for granting us eyes.
I'm with you on this. Willem hoped transformed Rom will reveal to him all secrets of the cosmos, but Rom didn't. So he called her 'vacuous' either by misunderstanding of her motives or by spite. It's clear not everybody thinks Rom is stupid, because Micolash really wants to take the same path she went, and the second note about Rom says she reached true enlightment, but she actively did choose not to share that.
Just found this channel and I love it. Great discussion, and your love for BB shows through very clearly. My personal impression playing the game was that Byrgenwerth was built next to the lake because Rom was an ancient being there to start with. Always though Rom was a genuine great one, but never considered she was made by Willem and Co to control reality. Really sad when you consider Brain of Mensis by comparison may just have been a product of Micolash's jealousy, or maybe just curiosity to emulate Rom. Instead BoM became a dead vegetable monster, incapable of response, though would have been an incredibly boss fight if a success (think cleric beast with a winter lantern head) Rom was tough but I always found her incredibly graceful, dignified and mothering, even if she was an awful inhuman abomination. Seeing ebrietas as a moth and her as a caterpillar almost made me think they are one in the same (where Rom might mature into a winged Ebrietas, as a caterpillar would pupate), and if so maybe Ebrietas was once human, transformed by the Choir and trapped in a damp dungeon basement. How else would they be able to contain her? Unless captured as an infant and nurtured in the basement of the cathedral? Personally I think Ebrietas is a bs boss fight, her health bar is insane. Very difficult to solo.
I think the reason we see Amygdala everywhere is because we’re in a nightmare and the amygdala is part of the human brain 🧠 and nightmares and fear and anxiety, emotions like these originate in the amygdala of the brain.
also love the idea that the "rom" everyone is fretting about is "rome", would not've considered it without you two mentioning names in this game are what the people who first encounter it utter first. great video!

I think that it’s possible that when you go into the Chalice Dungeons and kill Rom, the Bloodletting Beast, the Queen of Yharnam, etc., that is actually how they died originally.
