neither this narrator nor most observers take into account that Nicklaus did not win with all the modern equipment. We live in the modern era of very, very loud media that is ubiquitous and this is why many have forgotten just how supreme Jack Nicklaus really was. Jack's 18 wins, 19 runner-ups and 8 3rd place finishes does place him at the top, but everyone forgets that Jones won 44% of all the US Opens and British Opens he ever entered and without the bus accident there is no way to predict what Hogan might have accomplished, not to mention Tiger's "accident" in 2009 pretty much ended his run at Jack's 18, winning only one more major, the Masters in 2019 - going by the numbers, you can't take it away from Jack, but no player is even close to the 44% Jones accomplished.
PS - Jones basically retired from serious competition at the age of 28, as he somehow acquired syringomyelia after being struck by lightning in 1929, the year before he completed the Grand Slam, his motor reflexes diminishing rapidly - he spent his latter years in a wheelchair. Hogan, Nelson, Snead - the all-time great pros all worshipped Jones.
BTW - in the1925 US Open, Jones called a one-stroke penalty on himself during the tournament proper because he saw his ball move in the rough, but no one else saw it move. This sportsmanship prevented him from winning his 5th US Open title outright - he lost the 36-hole playoff the next day by one shot to Willie Macfarlane. Winning this Open would have given him 8 US Open and British Open titles in 16 attempts - 50% - but I'll bet he slept better at night. His reply to being congratulated for being honest - "you may as well praise me for not robbing a bank."

You think because Jack played in 154 majors winning 18 of them (11%), makes him greater than Jones, who won 7 out of 16 (44%) but Jones retired at the age of 28. If Jack retired at the same age, he would have also won 7 after playing in 36 majors, a winning percentage of 19%. The U. S. Open is the championship of American golf. Every year it is played in June on different courses. Keep in mind that technology always lowers scores & before 1960 players were not allowed to clean the ball on the green. Player won tournaments in 27 consecutive years, and 163 tournaments total worldwide (Jack 117 wins in total and Tiger 110 wins in total)...numbers don't lie!
Sure. But longevity matters. I’ll take 45 yo jack over 45yo tiger all day long. If some golfer won 10 majors in 2.5 years and then never won one again and finished with 40ish tournament wins, that would not make him the goat, only the best at peak.
Tiger may have had a bigger peak though it was short, funded by nike the media the equipment distance boom and absolutely zero competition in his prime but he can't touch jacks longevity he finished 2nd 19 times in addition to 18 wins in majors, thats insane consistency! Tiger didn't have to battle legends like palmer and hogan ( Phil doesnt count sorry his little brother Phil was never a threat to him ) Jack could also bomb it like tiger with inferior equipment thats truly goat talent
Love the comments on Tiger v Jack, but the reality is that from an objective point of view the argument has long been over. Certainly if we can agree that major championship golf, when every top player is totally focussed on immortality, is the highest test within the game. Memorials and Colonials and LA Opens are absolutely significant, but they are not the highest reaches of the game. And that's why Sam Snead was always filled with regret (no us opens) and Doug Sanders rarely went a day without flashbacks (St Andrews missed putt) and Fred Couples can't really be called a great player despite the great talent (1 major). The argument about Tiger v Jack ended over the 11 year period between 2008-2019. There really is no statistical comparison anymore. And as much as I rate Tiger as one of the few grandmasters of the game, his record in the highest reaches of his sport (major championships) bears no comparison to Nicklaus's. If we simply take the 25 playing years (100 majors) between 1962, his first pro year, and 1986, his last major win, Nicklaus's record is as follows: WIN - 18 SECOND - 19 THIRD - 9 TOP 5 - 56 TOP 10 - 73 Now Tiger had not quite reached that many major appearances when he won his last major in 2019 (he was at 84, so not far off) but the comparison is stark. WIN - 15 SECOND - 7 THIRD - 4 TOP 5 - 33 TOP 10 - 41 Simply put, Tiger's figures don't compare. Maybe he shone brighter in his peak years than Nicklaus, but then I look at Hogan's record 1946-1953 (9 majors) and I'm pretty convinced that he shone as bright as either of them over the short term. When you look at Nicklaus's wins as well, what really stands out is that he did so from the front, from level, and from significantly behind, after 54 holes. Simply, the range of his psychological resources was much broader than Tiger's. It's easy to understand why we have obsessed on Tiger since he arrived on the scene. Certainly he has been the most domineering of all the great players, but even after his amazing masters victory in 2019, it's clear there was a greater master. That master is 83 now, but even when you see him being interviewed about Tiger now, and he answers generously in that high pitched voice, you see the fire of competition in his eyes. You might hear him say, when asked how he would fare today, something along the lines of "well you know I think I was a pretty good player." But he doesn't mean exactly that. What he really means is that he'd smoke the lot of them just like the old days. What we have to remember is that this guy shot 17 under at the Masters in 1965 and won by 9 shots, on a course exactly the same length as in 1997, and using balls and clubs which took more skill to yield. Do you think he rolled his eyes when everybody forgot that and eulogised Tiger in 1997? Maybe he called Ray Floyd who did something similar in 1976 and they rolled their eyes together? Tiger has been as compelling a sportsman as has ever lived. He loved dominating, obliterating the field from the front, but I think a few of his majors would have been stolen from him by a flaxen haired bear stalking him down, while in those numerous times when Tiger wasnt dominating, the bear would have still been picking up his trophies as usual. When we are young we tend to dismiss the past. I think that's what happened when thinking about Tiger. We've not known enough about what went before to make the right judgement. We've downplayed achievements we didn't see: and because we didn't see them we've done them the disservice of not considering them properly. We forget for how long Nicklaus was great; we forget the greatness of some of his rivals. Tigers achievements are immortal, but he's not the greatest. That title, objectively, belongs to another. One final question I always ask myself. We have to form a team to play a team of extraterrestrial champions in a tournament using all formats of the game. We're not allowed to mix the two eras but we have to make a choice between them. Everybody's lives depend on the result. So who are we taking? Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Casper, Watson, Miller, Ballesteros, Irwin, Trevino, Floyd, Or Woods, Els, Singh, Duval, Johnson, Spieth, McIlroy, Koepka, Mickelson. I'd be comfortable with either to be honest. But if my life depended on it and two planes were idling on the runway, I'm looking for the Lear Jet with Arnie at the controls and a shit load of persimmon and blades in the baggage hold.

And finally, Jack was excellent at team events - Tiger didn’t have the mindset for those. Jack and Tiger are the two top players of the last 60 years - it’s close - but Jack wins.
@@keithharris6442 well and all about the “double winning percentage” that’s accounted for all the majors Jack played as an old man. Lee Trevino even said “the percentage is inaccurate, at jacks youth his winning percentage must’ve been in the 30s.” And it’s true. For a 9 year span he was rather 2nd or won in majors. He also has 58 2nds in pga tournaments with his 73 wins. Tom Watson also said that if Jack had played more tournaments we would’ve been well over 100 wins. Sure. But longevity matters. I’ll take 45 yo jack over 45yo tiger all day long. If some golfer won 10 majors in 2.5 years and then never won one again and finished with 40ish tournament wins, that would not make him the goat, only the best at peak.
It is Tiger woods
Tiger may have had a bigger peak though it was short, funded by nike the media the equipment distance boom and absolutely zero competition in his prime but he can't touch jacks longevity he finished 2nd 19 times in addition to 18 wins in majors, thats insane consistency! Tiger didn't have to battle legends like palmer and hogan ( Phil doesnt count sorry his little brother Phil was never a threat to him ) Jack could also bomb it like tiger with inferior equipment thats truly goat talent
i share a name with ths dude
he got a little help...... poppy and len's puppy
He is the greatest it's not even close. Tiger had about 7-8 years of domination
If we simply take the 25 playing years (100 majors) between 1962, his first pro year, and 1986, his last major win, Nicklaus's record is as follows:
WIN - 18
SECOND - 19
THIRD - 9
TOP 5 - 56
TOP 10 - 73
Now Tiger had not quite reached that many major appearances when he won his last major in 2019 (he was at 84, so not far off) but the comparison is stark.
WIN - 15
SECOND - 7
THIRD - 4
TOP 5 - 33
TOP 10 - 41
Simply put, Tiger's figures don't compare.
Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Casper, Watson, Miller, Ballesteros, Irwin, Trevino, Floyd,
Or
Woods, Els, Singh, Duval, Johnson, Spieth, McIlroy, Koepka, Mickelson.
I'd be comfortable with either to be honest.
But if my life depended on it and two planes were idling on the runway, I'm looking for the Lear Jet with Arnie at the controls and a shit load of persimmon and blades in the baggage hold.
Ok, Tiger fans. He was great and could have been the GOAT but the yardstick is majors. Tiger won’t likely get 4 more to beat Jack’s 18.
Yeah, we were rooting for him but since his dad passed so did it seems, his moral character.
PenguinGolf
Sorry to disappoint you all
But the greatest gholfer ever to live is Mow Norman
Everybody was scared of him and most off al the jealousy all the spoiled brads had towards him
THE GREATEST GHOLF LEGENDARY MAN EVER
AND NOBODY CAN PROOF ME WRONG
Lol Tiger and Jack would dominate Moe
Mm-your- field
Not muur-field
I want a wife like Barbara
Nicklaus didnt play as many tournaments as tiger and never cheated with steroids . N. Won more majors . goat
Let me say from the start . Yes, the best golfer ever and there was and is some some good one’s. Including LeeT and BenH. Great athlete, jack, not so much. There have been very few men that have played pro in multiple sports. Jack was not one of them. Jack grew up in privilege at a country club thanks to his fathers success. Coutry club and military service do not go hand in hand for the history of the Nicklaus family tree
Before I even watch. Tiger is / was the best golfer of all time…not close
You must be a hack or a non golfer. Tiger lived to pass Jack. He fell three majors short. Jack beat legends Tiger beat guys who never were great. When you fall short of a goal. The guy who holds the goal is the better golfer. Another tiger fanboy.
@tylerholt6828 stupid comments starting with your first one. Jack played in majors until he was 70 years old. He played those later years for pride knowing winning is out of the question. I am sick of tiger fan boys making argument when Tiger accepts the facts. Majors are the determining factor. It is the same in tennis another individual sport. Get over it and move on.
@@thetruthfornow6045Tiger had DOUBLE the winning percentage at Majors. I could argue that Tiger is TWICE as good as Jack and TWICE as likely to win a major than Jack in their primes.
@@thetruthfornow6045Jack is also in 3RD for most wins 😂 Behind Tiger & Sam Snead.
@@sizzler3467 stupid comment. Jack played majors into his mid sixties not expecting to win but to enjoy the atmosphere. Tiger is done winning majors. By not playing them his percentage will always be higher.
the greatest golfer of all time is Jack, but Count Yogi is far more talented
Jack is the GOAT... 18 majors vs 15 for Eldrick... 19 runner-ups in majors... Tiger used Jack's major record as his measuring stick for GOATness... end of debate!
STOP PEDDLING THIS WAFFLE.
2nd best golfer ever. Tiger is the goat and its not even close.
Jack is the GOAT... 18 majors vs 15 for Eldrick... 19 runner-ups in majors... Tiger used Jack's major record as his measuring stick for GOATness... STFU with the nonsense...
It’s close in wins but not in top 3s. There was no more dominant golfer than Tiger. But Tiger had no Watson, no Trevino to beat. The best was Phil and Tiger had his number the way Jack had Arnie’s. And finally, Jack was excellent at team events - Tiger didn’t have the mindset for those. Jack and Tiger are the two top players of the last 60 years - it’s close - but Jack wins.
NO YOU STOP YOUR NONSENSE AND GO READ A BOOK.@@bigcountry4539
Tiger would give his left nut for Jack's record at the majors.
Jack=GOAT.
Everyone knows that the Undisputed Greatest Golfer Of All Time is Phil Mickelson. 🙄
THE GREATEST MAJOR CHAMPION OF ALL TIME, YES HOWEVER NOT THE BEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME, THATS TIGER WHO HAS EVERY OTHER RECORD, SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The earth was formed 6000 years ago by God
and everything on earth that appears to be 6001 years and older was planted there by God just to screw around with us
Aye, and Santa Claus lives at the North Pole.
I hear some fellow by the name of Tiger gave it a damn good go, but came up just a bit short of Jack.
But Tiger is the best golfer of all time
No he's number two.
@@swiftbobberHe has more wins than Jack 😂. Double the winning percentage at Majors and probably 40 more records than Jack holds
@@sizzler3467Jack has the only record Tiger wanted and didn't get. Most majors. End of conversation.
Jacks mentality and his ability to come from behind and clutch is what makes him the greatest I’ve ever seen. And just him as a man, a better man to strive to be than Tiger. I’ve watched both, and don’t get me wrong Tigers great but he’s not in front of Nicklaus.
@@marb9113 agree 100 %. Sizzler quoting win percentage is just nieve at vest, or plain stupid
