Mitchell, That was a wonderfully presented bio of Jim Furyk. His father was right not to change his unorthodox swing as you brought out. Only one to shoot a 58 in competition, Wow!

it is not the strangest swing in golf. it is a swing golf like there are many and it squares perfectly well the club head at impact.I use it since 2020 and thanks to it now I am 7 hp.Wolffe use it as well and
a similar version is used by Bubba Watson and Jack Nicklaus.Very steep and vertical on the backswing and then shallow ( the difficult part ) on the down swing

As long as you get to and through impact good and often it doesn’t matter. How the backswing looks doesn’t matter yet people obsess over it.

It's okay to obsess over it, it's quite important. Just don't obsess about making it look "proper" or similar to someone else's.
Get it to work for yourself and let what everyone else says be damned.

Three things you noticed getting into golf in the 2000s:
    Tiger Woods' dominance
Phil Mickelson's miraculous shots from bad spots
    Jim Furyk's weird swing

Buddy of mine bartendered at Jim's house during a private party, worked 8 hours for $20/hr, and Jim stiffed him out of a tip. Jim, if you read this, he got his tip in the form of a case of Dom from your garage. He says thanks 😂
Moral of the story... Be nicer.

Your mate agreed to $160 for 8 hours work. If Jim/catering company wanted to pay him more they would have advertised it for more.
Your mate just seems like a prick
