  • Blow to Democracy: Thailand's Parliament Fails to Confirm New PM | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Pita Limjaroenrat, the winner of Thailand's general election, fails to secure enough support to become Prime Minister. He says he will try again next week. But will the next vote be any different? You see, Thailand's democracy has been rigged, by its military. The Military Junta have created a system that makes it almost impossible for anyone to take charge without their support.

Similar thing happened in the 1960's in Vietnam. They need to precursor to be done that opens the door to larger scale reserve activation. This is some big news flying under the radar.

This is half true. Pita's party resist to reform monarchy and lese-majesty law. They are also support behind the group of young protestors who want to reform or get rid of monarch.
The goal of this party is not only about monarch but also instability of military , be a partner of US and western rather than China. Thier movement is of course might be in favor of the west however a risk for country.
Pita could get enough votes to become PM from Phum Jai Thai and some of senators if his party will not continue on this reform. However the former lead of this party would not allowed him to agree on this deal. Therefore , he couldn't become PM on the first vote.
You need to understand that this party is completely left wing( liberalism) while other parties in Thailand are middle left or middle right. To become PM , you need to get majority of house representative and senate. This is the rule and everyone know before election.

Confirm the elected Prime Minister quickly. That's a sacred duty to the free land of Thailand; and Thailand is a very free land. Royal prerogatives and power are legitimate and even sacred; Royal duty is challenging and necessary. The military is of course important but cannot legitimately entirely replace civilian and democratic governance. This doesn't work well in utilitarian terms; and it looks primitive, say African, to the developed and western world. And Thailand needs liberal modernization; I lived and taught at Phetchaburi Rajabhat University mixing much with those who lived in bamboo huts and of course with the circles Generals businessmen and such that a Professor comes to know. You must confirm this Prime Minister; A military government without an elected civilian leader is not the Thai way and it's not seen as legitimate by American and European investors and expats and potential tourists. Please confirm the elected Prime Minister; He's not going to be powerful enough to denigrate military or royal power much. Humor me.
