I find it interesting that the people that are willing to accept that propaganda can have an influence on them are the ones least likely to be influenced by it.
The people that are provoked by the question immediately go into a defensive mode and lose the ability to self reflect.

The preposition is false. The point of being brainwashed is that you are unaware it happened.

If there is something I have learned in the last few yrs, it is the amazing power of propaganda. Prior to the last few yrs, I felt intelligent people could see thru it , but now I don't believe. As an example I live in a beautiful city, it is walkable, it is gorgeous. I would never move away for multiple reasons. It is Chicago. And when I tell people that watch Fox news where I come from, they IMMEDIATELY start lecturing me on Chicago. And when they finally finish their lecture, I will often ask "have you been there?". And they always haven't but will have some answer (that I don't believe) that "my cousin lived there and he was robbed a hundred times." It has gotten to where I don't like to tell people where I live and will walk away when I see their lecture start.
But watch Fox news and you will see story after story after story about how terrible Chicago is. Propaganda works. Sometimes I point out that we actually are #10 in murder rates of large cities, not number one. I have people from St Louis (who is #2 on the list) lecture me.
I remember these same people railing about how Obamacare was going to kill everyone. These same people, know practically nothing about the Ukraine conflict, but ask them and they immediately use the talking points of how we spend too much money in Ukraine, etc. But ask these people "what is going on in Bakhmut?" and they have no idea what you are talking about. They usually don't know who Zelinsky is. But they are certain that sending weapons to Ukraine is skyrocketing our debt. And if you confront them with facts, like that our national debt went from 9 to 18 trillion under Trump, they just don't want to hear it. Or that Obamacare is still out there and not killing people. Or that Chicago has a better crime rate than 10 other large American cities and they just dont want to hear it.
I have really learned in the last 4-5 yrs how powerful propaganda is. When I see how powerful it has been in the US, then I understand why the Russians think they are rescuing native Russian speakers from evil Nato Nazis in the Ukraine.

The funny thing is if you ask those people that believe Chicago is a crime infested city "do you think you might be brainwashed?" they would be adamant that they are not. To paraphrase Twain, "it's much easier to fool someone than convince them they've been fooled."

Being "neutral" or not caring or saying "you dont know who to believe" or "the truth lies somewhere in the middle of two opposing sides" is in itself showing that the person was likely manipulated. Its not hard to know the difference between Bucha being wrong and something more nuanced like who was worst when two colonial empires fought each other for dominance over the same land like England and France had in the past; at this time theres only one empire fighting to conquer land from a non-empire but democratic state and its ruzzia. Neutral, not caring, not knowing who to believe or thinking the truth is somewhere in the middle means you dont know or refuse to admit the easily seen and accessible (at least for the youth) truth

I think you are the one who is manipulated and so am I. I'm not saying that you are wrong or not, but being one sided is a clear sign of being manipulated no matter if it's right or wrong. Just because you are neutral doesn't mean you disagree or anything. They probably agree with your thoughts, but there's also the other side for example, NATO expansion which Russia doesn't want and they might not want. @@Jokerlolpopkagamings That's like saying that if in a discussion with a flat-earther you don't agree at least partially that means you're brainwashed yourself? Surely you can see the mistake in that logic. The truth usually does lie somewhere in the middle, but not always, and in case of the current conflict the truth lies far more on the Western side. Some facts that *CLEARLY* point in that direction: Russians not being allowed to freely speak their minds about the war, the fact that on Russian state TV you regularly see a talkshow host asking for Western capitals to be nuked, the fact that political opponents in Russia have been silent with poison, imprisonment and/or death for decades already, etc, etc. *NONE* of that stuff happens in Western countries.

People born in USSR have a lot of resentment towards the west. 90s reforms were a huge shock for them. They were adapted one world around them, but suddenly found themselves in another. On top of that, privatization of all stuff left after USSR was anything but fair. In their worldview it's a price for defeat in a cold war. I used to resent them, but now I find myself in a similar situation, but in reverse, so I kinda starting to get it.

Stalin was every single sort of an asshole at once, but there was less corruption under Stalin, because elites were 'replaced' faster than they managed to establish their corruption schemes. Late USSR survived on oil exports just like Russia right now. Eastern European countries were mostly seen as a liability, like Chechnya right now. Relative loyalty of elites and population was paid by natural resource exports income. What makes an invasion 'legal', btw? Is it when us does it?

I just prefer to never believe 100% of whatever narrative I am fed, because there are so many different actors trying to promote their _own_ agenda through media and distort the _other_ side's stories, in order to gain society's favouring, its impossible to know the "Real" truth.

We are all influenced by propaganda, just as we are influenced by commercials and candy placed in strategical places in the store and so on. Everyone is trying to influence everyone with their own ideas. Me personally I try to understand who is the source, why are they posting this new now and also compare it with other sources. If you to 90% watch Russian sources and social media, you will most likely buy into what they are saying just as you would believe Ukrainian sources if you watch it for 90%. watching different sources makes it possible to compare the information, but you can still be tricked. Its not easy.

I would just add that when people answer with 'the truth is in the middle', in sociology and psychology we call that moral relativism, a euphemism for delusion and lies , as somebody would not state clearly their position, usually not on the side of truth as we k ow it. Another phrase for it, particularly now in the West would be ' I am telling MY truth'. Every individual in this case has their own version of truth. Truth has thus become a subjective notion for some that can get away with murder. Another phrase circulated around by those that are unprincipled and have no moral rectitude is 'there is no absolute truth'.In countries where corruption is high, this phrase is a favourite quote back to anyone upholding the Truth.

@@joiedevivre5119 An investor?))))) All the press in the world is unprofitable, no one will just invest money there. The press is fed either by states, or by NGOs for state money, or by media holdings serving the interests of parties and financial-industrial groups.
That's why you can't give a single example of an independent press.
