Water pump failure is arguably the biggest issue with the Edge, especially with the 3.5 V6. To make matters worse, it's located in a hard to reach location, so that means you have to remove the engine to replace it. And if you don't, you'll destroy your engine. Unfortunately the Mazda CX-9 from 2007-2015 with the 3.7 V6 also has that issue.

While many points Tobi made as the reasons to stay away from first gen edge (2007 - 2013) might be true, I think its only because of our car culture in Nigeria and the enviroment. Mostly poorly trained technicians who are more inclined to Japanese technologies, relatively expensive genuine replacement and service parts etc though they do last longer.
For starters, this gen outsold the popular Venza in the US. In fact Toyota stopped production of Venza around 2014, 2015 for sales reason before recently rreviving a second generation Venza with hybridised 4 cylinder engine. Honda Crisstour was stopped for the same poor sales reason but Honda is yet to rescusitate it.
So there must be something good about this famiky crossover called Fird Edge that they know and we don't
For starters, it drives with some satisfying heft and quiet inside while also comfortable: .
Somebody mentioned the water pump problem and I totally agreed cause it is timing chain driven and located INSIDE the engine (Duratec series 3.5 and 3.7 v6 engines. First gen Cx9 mazda used these too). So if it fails, end of story bcos oil andwater noh be friend. But truth is, it will outlast the 'big' Highlander (2008-2013) water pump of the same generation which will start " crying" after about 100,000. km though it is easier to replace cause of location.
If you like this car and buy belgium and you can't access the car history (thru carfaxx etc) and you are not sure if it has been changed before, get a good mechanic to change waterpump ASAP. Then use high grade, specified engine oil ( I think 5w-30), preferable synthetic. Good oil and timely changes will preserve both the timing components and pump..
Gearbox should be serviced REGULARLY too. This is not only forEdge, but true for all cars. But avoid every Ford 4wd systemcause of the PTU which are prone to failure because of location near hot exhaust that break down the differential oil and causes the system to fail
. But if you don buy (any) Ford car with 4wd , forget wetin oyinbo write that the oil in the diff is sealed for life, NAH LIE, !!change the oil every 30.000 kilometer and you are good to go
The first gen was facelifted in 2011 with improvement in the engine and even size of shock component. Then a turbo 4 cylinder engine was introduced. Advantage, better fuel economy than the v6's with almost same performance. Disadvantage, (almost) same engine as the baby Range Rover, the Evogue. Need I say more..
Nigerian car buyers reading this ( in Nigeria) understands 😂😂
    Regards

As someone who owns and is still driving the 2008 Ford edge, I very much agree with this comment. Nigerians love patching up vehicles and using it to near death before taking the vehicle off for the needed repair work.
I bought my car in 2022, and I must say what I discovered was an eye opener. I spent an arm and a leg to revive the car from a literal near death situation, and I’m currently enjoying every bit of the car. The v6 SEL trim can ride on almost any terrain.
Here is what I’ve come to learn:
      - Overheating: the is a popular problem most mechanics will first point at water pump just to open the engine - DON’T TOUCH THAT YET. Check the fans first are working, check you radiators also if they are clean or in good shape. If all these are fine, they check your coolant reserve for shortage. Other things I have discovered that also contributes to overheating - shortage or leaking transmission oil, bag engine oil or not using recommended oil. (I’ll propose you use Motocraft engine oil and filter if you can afford it. Thank me later)
Electrical fault - get a good rewire technician, cos honestly that’s the difference between life and death of your car. AVOID I SABI REWIRE FORD MECHANICS OOO, the ones that work on Toyota and Honda - they will use your car to learn work. If you reside in Lagos, just go to Ojuelegba you’ll get great rewire technicians there.
This is all I can comment on right now from my personal experience. Once you fix this faults, you’d be proud to own a Ford Edge - it doesn’t disappoint
