Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, hormonal symptoms, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students.
As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care.
Working with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association, Dr. Barnard has authored key resolutions, now part of AMA policy, calling for a new focus on prevention and nutrition in federal policies and in medical practice. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia’s Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health.
Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee.

By chance I attended a talk given by Dr Barnard sponsored by Vitamix. I had been struggling with my diabetes and weight loss. When it was over I bought his book and read it cover to cover. I'm an all or nothing person so I cleared my house of anything not vegan, spent hours at the grocery reading labels and 6 months later I was down 70 pounds. Yes in 16 years I've not always been vegan but I never gained that 70 pounds back and I thank Dr Barnard every day.

Just like every woman struggling with weight loss now, I yoyoed for years - staying on track for a month or 2, losing a few lbs in the process before falling off. And each time I fell off, I just gained the weight back plus more. In July 2021, I was at my heaviest - 255 lbs... See full story on my channel.

The consumption of chicken, specifically breast meat whether it has increased, the use of hormones to hasten maturity of fowl is astonishing. Fifty years ago,a small farm harvested chickens for meat at 8 months. A local farmer sold his chickens to a 'chicken restaurant' at 6 -8 weeks of age. By increasing the estrogen in feed, the chickens are now sold at 2-4 weeks. In my area, there are 8 yr old girls whose diet is high in chicken, are menstruating.

I am an MD and have type 2 DM and have been on keto/carnivore my whole adult life to control my blood glucose (HBA1C 6.5 on keto) and I just started the rice diet a few days ago (on my way to plant based). I started extra strict with Dr Kempner's rice diet this time because I did the Pritkin diet a couple of years ago and the Pritkin diet did not work after a month and my blood sugars were way out of control on Pritkin with HbA1C skyrocketing to 8 (from 6.5 on keto).. The rice diet is supposed to cure diabetes yet my blood sugars are the highest they have ever been in my life on this diet. And I am only eating 800 calories/day. All I am eating are plain rice (no oils salt or spice) and fruit as directed on the diet. My blood glucose has NEVER exceeded 200 when eating full fat/protein meals (usually after meal BS about 140), and even on the rare occasion I drink a soda at a party, my blood glucose only went to 160. Yet I had 1/2 cup of rice and one grapefruit and my blood glucose is 300!!!. That has never happened before. How are these high carb no fat low protein diets supposed to cure DM2 as advertised? Not to mention, I hardly ate any volume on keto (small OMAD actually) as I was never hungry on carnivore/keto. After eating rice and fruit on this diet, I am ravenous. But I have willpower to keep it up, but so far after a few days NO weight loss and very high BS. Not exactly motivating. Although otherwise I feel "OK" (no headaches or fatigue etc), I do not think plant based will be sustainable for me. I tried Pritkin in the past because I really want to be plant based and had the exact same thing happen while on Pritkin (really high blood glucose, ravenously hungry even eating all the veggies and fiber in that diet). How are these plant based diets supposed to fix blood glucose when all the carbs just pour into the bloodstream at once with little protein and no fat to counteract it? Even as an MD, this is really hard to believe anymore. I REALLY want it to work and I am VERY strict following these things when I do it, yet I NEVER lose any weight on this type of diet (no weight loss on a strict month of Pritkin either), and my blood glucose just skyrockets out of control, and I was ravenous on Pritkin too. I will give this one week to see if anything changes. But maybe my genetics are just destined for carnivore type diet. (which BTW other than my BS being well controlled on keto, all my other numbers, cholesterol, LFTs EVRYTHING is perfect on keto). But I love animals and this makes me so sad. I want to go plant based at this point in my life, but it is not sustainable if my BS continue so high on only 800 cals/day. I am having trouble thinking and doing my work, and I can only live with being ravenous for about a month before I will throw in the towel. Maybe this is why there are equally as many folks having miraculous results on carnivore as they are on plant based. Maybe genetics play into this somehow. I just wish plant based worked for me. I will give it some more time but it is frightening seeing these high blood sugars for 3 hours after every rice/fruit meal. I think when any diet restricts things, it actually decreases the allergen load you're eating, so health improves which is why carnivores are raving about their health results as much as plant based dieters. Maybe the bottom line is that humans are not meant to eat it all which makes life so much less enjoyable :( Wishing good luck to everyone.

@@Praisinghisname I have read that book :) and all of Dr McDougall's books, Dr Pritkin, Gary Null...every single resource regarding plant based nutrition that's out there. I have wanted to go plant based for years because I love animals so much. I decided to try the rice diet because it is so limited and strict, I was hoping it would help me. This diet does progress in phases to fully plant based (adds veggies etc as time passes.) But currently, this Kempner rice diet of pure rice and fruit has my BS over the moon even at only 700-800 cals/day. And Pritkin diet did the same thing to me a couple of years ago when I did that one but I thought maybe all the beans and other things allowed on Pritkin was too much for my metabolism to handle after a lifetime of keto which is why I started with this very restricted rice diet this time (Dr Kempner cured renal disease with this diet too). I am giving this another week or so, but unfortunately, my BS are still in the 300's on 800 cals/day only. I NEVER was any higher than 160 BG on the keto/carnivore style diet (have been on it 40 years, but did not develop DM until 2013). I just keep praying this is the one that will be my miracle.

@@NonameSam-yd9hq so sorry to hear that is did not work for you. You probably have insulin resistance due to the years of dietary fat and keto lifestyle. According to the book, this happens initially however if you stick to the program of wfpb diet with low fat your sugars will eventually stabilize. It helped me but I had to stick to it. Eventually my a1 c came down and I enjoy this simple yet wonderful food daily without any limit. Will pray for you as you persist in your endeavor.

@@NonameSam-yd9hqthis is not an advice, but for me eating lots of fiber plant foods, green chili and raw red onion, and not eating after 5 pm, and completely avoiding oil, sugar and salt in any form, and 30 minutes of walking or some sit-ups or pushups, put back the sugar normal after 4 or 5 weeks

I pre-ordered Dr Barnard's book. I have a question (a little late for the online chat, tho) I have stage 3b CKD with Insulin Dependent Diabetes, and I'm wondering if it is alright to eat beans. I've recently had trouble with too much potassium. Wanting to heal both the CKD, and Diabetes in a serious and long term way. I'm only 66. Turn 67 in June. Also wondering if Okra might be a super Vegetable. In soup especially.

Oil pulling is swushing it in your mouth, between your teeth... You know. It was popular a few years back.
I use coconut oil to oil my wooden garden tool handles. The smell hangs around, but will get less over time - non-toxic and inexpensive. Be sure to use it on tools that are outside, otherwise the smell is too much.

When I was a kid, the gas station had a vending machine with the small coca-colas and salted peanuts. My dad had a coke with peanuts in it.
    Circa 1960.
But my mom kept us on track mostly.
We did eat meat and veggies and a potato with small amount of sour cream.

Great interview! Dr Barnard should study the practice of oil-pulling for dental health. It’s okay to say “I’m not familiar with that but I’ll look into it.” Oil-pulling is not the same as eating coconut oil and many have achieved dental or oral health from this practice. My bio-dentist does it and recommends it.

Dr. Greger has reported extensively on oil pulling. The overwhelming consensus was there is ZERO benefit. The results were no better than rinsing with water. And there are downsides . . . as usual urban folklore is wrong again.

I liked most of this video but was disappointed about how dismissive Dr B was not only about women's 'uncomfortable ' symptoms of menopause, (he merely mentioned Hot flushes, not the myriad of others) but cited a non controlled study (that many folks have said was inconclusive) about HRT and higher risk of dementia. Why even mention a study that has been so called into question in the last year? Many viewers won't take the time to do their own homework, it's almost like the dark ages of still going off of the NIH study, without doing a deep dive as we should.
