Incredibly moving. Just the awesome power of Wayne’s imagination and undaunted musical spirit. One of the greatest tracks of the 90s. It shines on forever.
Johnson's feel on this song moves it right where you hope it will go! That is the mark of a truly gifted bassist, not just flash and fills, but style with substance! Alphonso Johnson is a true monster on the bass, without being demonstrative!
I went to the concert of Wayne more than ten years ago in Tokyo. He played Juju and Children Of The Night. I was just knocked out. Wayne is the man I admire.
2 Listen The Umpteenth Time Of This Performance--With The Youthful/Young Adult Power Of Rodney Holmes and Well Established & Convincing Rhythmic Foundational Support Of Alphonso Johnson Both Sound Like As If They're The Ones Who Originally Recorded The High LIFE Session---(Beard & Gilmore R "Icing On THE Cake"🍰 To Me)or This Concert The Rhythm Section's A Tight Machine--Man, I Never Tire Listening To This...🎼🎵🎶🎧🎷!!
Your drumming is just so great, Mr Holmes! Groove is just ridiculous - huge respect. I keep coming back here and listening to this version one of the best .. High Life is one of my favourite albums, r.
@@1rodneyholmes Your drumming was absolutely perfect for the song. I especially like the triplet feel after the extra snare note at the end of some of the phrases. Excellent.
Never saw Wayne Live saw Alphonso Johnson in concert with Billy Cobham , George Duke RIP and John Scofield in 77 they toured together awesome show Tower Theater Philly looked like his fingers covered the whole bass like Stanley's
I'm in Brooklyn NY, tried J&R in Manhattan, practically the only cd store left, they say it's out of print. I know, I know - use Amozon, etc., I'm just old school. But really, the recording is EXCELLANT, the live performances lack sound quality.
Sublime and wonderful!! How great to hear a live version of the 'High Life' version. Who is playing with Wayne on this? I can't believe there are no comments - thank you plectrum for uploading this TREASURE!!!!!! hoooooo
Anybody know who the guitarist & drummer are? SHHmmmokkin'!! That IS Alphonso Johnson on bass? Phew!!. Man so deep in the pocket, he on the other side of it!!
Not always, but in this case he has given a new life and energy to the tune in such an artful way. Genius is a word that's bandied about, but if it can't be applied here I don't know when it can.
This version grows on me, like when Gilmore and Shorter play the lines together., and the young Rodney Holmes. Just brilliant. We miss Wayne.
Every time I watch this, I am in absolute awe. At everyone. And have shed tears more than once. This is one of those pinnacles of human evolution....
Incredibly moving. Just the awesome power of Wayne’s imagination and undaunted musical spirit. One of the greatest tracks of the 90s. It shines on forever.
Jim Beard - keys, Alphonso Johnson - bass, David Gilmore - gtr., Rodney Holmes - Dr.
👍🙂 TY!! I HATE it when musicians aren't listed! 🙂👍
As Zawinul said, " The world´s greatest living musician".
Johnson's feel on this song moves it right where you hope it will go!

Japp! Johnssons basslines will last forewer. They keep singing in your head......
Wayne Shorter - Among the greatest of all time. National Treasure. World Heritage Treasure. Sentient LIfe Sounds of Planet Earth.
The air was thick with genius. Too many people will never have a clue.
This is just deep-water musicianship here! I could listen to this specific song for hours just to hear all of the nuances!
pauljupiter71..."U Ain't Never Lie" About This Live Track-Period.. It's To Much Info In It!!!
Super funky verso with Rodney and Alfonso! KILLER!
Wayne Shorter showing his Way-ne !

Just amazing. The interpretation of the original Art Blakey brought to life like this is so inspiring!
simply best composer and player and band .
Such a rich, detailed song. He could have put in half the details and it would have still been amazing.
Magnificent!!!
Beautiful!
Ponta de Areia quote at 4:04
Reminds me of his collaboration with Milton Nascimento. 😉🇧🇷
One of my favourite intros!
R.I.P Wayne shorter from me and the pointblank radio London family
Brilliant!!!
absolutely brilliant
Jazz master Wayne Shorter the best
nice piece!
played this cd to death loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great tune, jaw-dropping arrangement, amazing musicians. What else? Now I understand what Miles meant when he said that Shorter is a REAL composer...
@gustovero ...CHLDREN OF THE NIGHT was written over sixty years ago, when Mr. Gone was with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers!
@@brucescott4261 I know, but the arrangement of course was totally different.
Wonderful! and happy quotes as usual (Pontia di Area at 3:57 )

Does anyone know who the musicians in the band are? The bassist is great!

Awesome!
👏🏾👏🏾
Too good
Do céu!!!!!!!!!
Meu Deus!!!!!!!!
The drummer is Rodney Holmes.
I'm in Brooklyn NY, tried J&R in Manhattan, practically the only cd store left, they say it's out of print. I know, I know - use Amozon, etc., I'm just old school. But really, the recording is EXCELLANT, the live performances lack sound quality.

Yes, that is correct.
wayne shorter on saxophone
do you have the full concert?
it's Alphonso Johnson on bass, Jim Beard on keyboards, David Gilmore on guitar, don't know the drummer
LOL David Gilmore messed up the intro! Happens to the best! Absolutely love his playing in this band though which is legendary in my book.
@plectrum71 Will Kennedy?
@plectrum71 think the drummer is Wil Calhoun
How about buying it?
Anybody know who the guitarist & drummer are? SHHmmmokkin'!! That IS
Alphonso Johnson on bass? Phew!!. Man
so deep in the pocket, he on the other side of it!!
recipient of polar music prize
No the drummer is a very young Rodney Holmes.
What happened to the ending?
is here estiva jazz???
Is that keyboardist the same guy from those ridiculous live Dave Koz videos!?
Drummer Rodney Holmes
I got lucky again.
Rodney Holmes
9:59, and it is still too short!
Michael Brecker on Keys? haha
Great but IMO, Lke Microsoft Windows, not allways the updates improve the original
Not always, but in this case he has given a new life and energy to the tune in such an artful way. Genius is a word that's bandied about, but if it can't be applied here I don't know when it can.
looks like Alphonso Johnson on bass who's on traps and keyboards
EricVon bush Alphonso on bass, Jim Beard on keys
EricVon bush Rodney Holmes, definitely Alphonso, Jim Beard on 'boards, and David Gilmore. Great band. Great show. Caught them in DC.
Drummer is Herman Riley.
Its Rodney Holmes
Richard D. Ruttenberg
No. That’s me. And a very young me. Haha!
Terri lyne is a woman and a drummer!
Drummer: Terri Lyne Carrington? Check!
This is Rodney Holmes not TLC.
Too far into rock and hype for big bucks. Stick with young Shorter on Blue Note.
Fusion is dead!!!
Trash!!! He destroyed his own composition. Fusion is nothing!!!
Finally, in contrast to the 90-odd ignorant 'comments' above, the voice of reason. Thank you!!
