The magnificent Betty Carter. Caught her at Jazz Alley in Seattle. The finest jazz show they ever had. Running her young Julliard grads ragged. RIP Betty Carter. Top drawer.
Incroyable Betty Carter.
May 16th: Happy birthday Jazz-improve Singer-songwriter Miss Betty Carter (1929-1998)-National Medal of Arts, Grammy Award. Thank you and God bless. RIP Thanks for the upload, Cosmic Messenger. Blessings
she's so on here it's just WOW... clear a path, the BOSS is in the house tonight... her technique is only matched by her daring... 100% dynamo, just love it. Thanks for sharing
My favorite vocalist, she doesn't sound like Sarah, Ella, or Billie; she was one of a kind. I saw her at the Jazz Showcase in 1979. I miss her uncompromising honesty!!!!
We all loved her (and her trios) at our club in Lakewood. NJ. She defined only herself -- no one before her and no one after her did what she can do to The Music. She commanded the stage and the audience.
Yeah, but those who played with her were better for it. :) My fave jazz singer! I saw her a lot also. Got to where, in a small-club setting she'd spot my husband and I and look like, "Y'all here again?!" LOL
Yeah, I even saw them around that time, but it didn't look like Washington here to me. Maybe I just got used to the older version and forgot what the young Washington looked like!
From her entrances to her exits, Betty commanded the stage like a prize fighter in the ring. At least in my book, she's forever among the GOATs
Ive never, ever seen someone who can sing a song and transform it the way Betty Carter can. Genius
one of the most magnificent singers that ever lived
YES for surety is ...
Fantastic ♡♡♡
That bass is on fire

Unbelievable virtuosity and freedom. Total presence.
Over the past couple years I watch this - MASTERCLASS
Why am I, at the age of eighty-four, just now learning about this fabulous voice ???
Better late than never ! Thanks to the internet I have found her at 21 years old
🎉❤ great question!!! She and sooo many of there should be better known!!!
But at any rate WELCOME!!!
Well. I had college radio in themid80's. Ypsilanti /Ann Arbor. Betty rules! Fabulous band leader!! Sad she's gone.
She was talent who deserved much wider recognition than she ever received.
I’m the words of the new kids, You gotta hold that L playa! lol
Long Live Betty Carter and John Hicks!
Betty always had the BEST pianists in her group - had to have it going on to be worthy to accompany the master! Like John Hicks here
omg the inflections, intonations, improvisation, the band hanging in & hanging on.. this is sonically life changing 🔝
Incroyable Betty Carter.

I remember seeing Betty Carter sing at my favorite speakeasy Steve Paul's The Scene in N.Y.C. in 1969
She was fantastic!
WOW!!!!
So pure and unapologetic. Jazz.
The original true jazz singer
some say she's the ONLY jazz singer.
@@rillloudmother believe it was Lena Horne who said that same thing.
@@megadethly not a bad source!
@@megadethly Carmen McRae said it. 😉
Dayam, Betty singing, "my favorite things". out of sight!
She was the best. I cry when she sings she's so good.
Glorious, just thrilling. Now they’re my favorite things as well. She’s convinced me.

When I heard this Voice as a kid, I was mesmerized. I still am. I can’t explain what her voice does but it is magical. Betty Bebop Carter. Wow.
I used to run to Philly whenever she was in town.. miss her so much
THAT'S how you breathe new life into a good old tune!

Betty is pure - also what a band holy god
This woman could sing. She could deconstruct a song and take it to another level of experience and evolution!!
she's so on here it's just WOW... clear a path, the BOSS is in the house tonight... her technique is only matched by her daring... 100% dynamo, just love it. Thanks for sharing
She flips this standard over until it is WELL DONE! WOW!
I couldn't have said it better!!!
Better Carter My Baby I was Listening To Her Since I Was 16 I'm 57 Trolley Song Was The First Song I Heard of Hers in 79 She is AWESOME R.i.p.👸🏾
The timing and tone of “dog bites/bee stings/when I’m feeling (sad)” around 1:10 is UNBELIEVABLE. I had to reply it several times in awe.
♥️
My favourite "dog bites" come at 2:20 😁
That bass guitar player is good! Ms. Betty Carter is amazing! The whole band get a THUMBS UP!!!

Her talent and skills are simply amazing!!!💞👏🏽🔥💯

She is the best
😯😯completamente DESTRUTTURATA😍👏👏👏👏
My goodness ‼️‼️‼️🥳🥳🥳
Saw her many times. She was the best. Went through a lot of rhythm sections, though!
Yeah, but those who played with her were better for it. :) My fave jazz singer! I saw her a lot also. Got to where, in a small-club setting she'd spot my husband and I and look like, "Y'all here again?!" LOL
She brought a lot of young talent with her. Yes, she was demanding, but look what brought forward. Still gives me shivvahs! ;-)
BEAUTIFUL CLASSICKAL MUSIC!!!!! 🙌🏿🙌🏿
I think the piano player is John Hicks. If someone is interested
John Hicks it IS, fabulous, fabulous, fabulous, I have the recording, but, to see them in person, AMAZING!
It's John. I knew him, and he had a catalogue of stories about Betty, whom he just about worshipped for her intensity.
Such a wow 😲
Detroit Royalty ❤ Thanks for posting
Doesn't get any better
Just wow !
This is crazy just remarkable
Nobody could *SKAT* like Betty 🎵💗

Betty Carter and Nina Simone. Tops!
Check out Rene Marie.
Yes; it is My Favourite Thing of Coltrane; my favourite song sang!!!!!
"The Songstress of Time.".....
John Hicks on piano and Curtis Lundy on bass... this would be late 70's, I guess. Anyone know who's on drums?
kind of looks like Kenny Washington.
Yeah Kenny Washington was playing with Betty Carter in the late 70's.
Yeah, I even saw them around that time, but it didn't look like Washington here to me. Maybe I just got used to the older version and forgot what the young Washington looked like!
@@storerdoyle9136 I'm glad you said it was Curtis Lundy, I never saw him looking so young.
It's Kenny Washington on drums
as only betty can do it
oh my god
💚🍀😯💐
this is nuts
now what artist is coming up next to sing after all of that😫? Not me !
LOL!!! NOT EVEN Patti Labelle would!!! LOL!!!
HAHAHAHA!!!
There's not much Rogers and Hammerstein in this performance, and there's no trace of Julie Andrews. I love it to bits.
McCoy on and Betty legendary combo
