Fixing The Cobra's Truck Like Steering

  • Finally fixed the loose steering wheel problem I was having on my 2003 svt cobra with the solid shaft I had installed in the car. We modified it to work as it was originally intended to but was a poor quality part. But I finally got rid of the dead zone play in the wheel.

    I've been dealing with this issue in my 98 cobra for awhile now. I've done everything I know to do to fix it. Recently I just bought a MM aluminum rack bushing kit and that helped it drive more straight but still has slop in the wheel. I guess I need to upgrade to this solid steering shaft.

    Wow, Kyle - that is nuts! I will definitely not be going with Flaming River if I ever have any problems with my steering rack. I'm glad you figured it out. I wish all companies were as stand-up as FTBR. I had a local Mustang specialist steal my ABS sensors off my differential when I did the IRS swap. I ended up spending another couple hundred bucks to source them off eBay. I'm also not surprised FTBR figured out how to fix your steering. James is amazing. I should hire them to figure out what my driveline vibration is.

    I did the maximum motorsports steering shaft several years ago. No issues, but now I want to go check.

    Thanks for the share, I bought a 99 GT with the same deadzone. I like to do HPDE's in my cars and that deadzone ain't gonna cut it. I definitely relate to the delay in steering when hitting a bump or crown in the road. I just bought the Maximum motorsports shaft and solid rack bushings, I will post up before and after wiggle and also measure inner to outer shaft dimensions.

    No flipping way Bro! I’ve been chasing my tail on this for countless years! I had a UPR one on mine. Took it off and put the Flaming river on on. It had less dead zone than the UPR one. Just put my UPR in a vice. All kinds of slop between the extended shaft. I changed everything chasing this. Just crawled under mine and watched the FR one do the same crap yours did. Thanks buddy for figuring this out.

    Just had my 04 cobra come back from body shop. It was side swiped and inner tie rod bent and lower control arm outta wack lil bit so they replaced that and inner tie rod. And I noticed the steering has same issue as yours. That dead zone with a slight play but not as much … I’ll crawl under to see what’s up. Good informative video 👍

    Damn I'm glad you where able to figure that one out. Props to FTBR. Mine has a lot of play like that in the shaft before it feels like it would actually engage and turn the wheel. Being that I have not had the car for very long yet I'm still figuring out what are actual problems and what's just a typical " Cobra thing" I know I have the really bad "cobra clunk" in the rear but the plans are in place for resolving all of that

    • @KyleSVT
      @KyleSVT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Me too. The cobra clunk never really goes away. It's better with bushings tho

    Left a comment 2 weeks back on a video of yours about the 04 cobra I was picking up with only 26k miles on it. I got screwed with this purchase. Drove it about 30 miles after I got it and had to tow it already, found out it flooded it self couldnt figure why on my own. Now its at a Mustang shop near me and they are baffled thought it was a tuning issue but turns out its not. They are going to start looking into the injectors, coil packs, ecu, ecm etc... Dealership aint helping me out at all and I couldnt get them to give me a warrenty with it. So after spending 38k on it i'm looking at another 5k to get it running right. Sure did put a bad taste in my mouth already just praying it aint serious issue

      If it has factory fuel system then I would immediately have them change the frps. It will flood the vehicle out when it goes bad. And they go bad. It’s actually one of the cobra things lol. Had it happen to me twice. Left me in the side of the road both times. I now carry a spare with me. It’s a 2 minute job that will leave your car stuck if you don’t have the part or the tools. Part is typically around $100-$130. Good luck.

      @@jeffcole9323 frps? I'm thinking that means fuel rail pressure sensor. If so that is the first thing i replaced. I'm still waiting to get it back. They found someone tapped into the main computer on the passeneger side and some of the taps and wires were loose and poor. Fixed that and were putting some new injectors in it as of monday. Really killing me waiting to get it back lol
