Today on JD Cars we’re getting to the bottom of this steering wheel play on the Tacoma! Some had told me it was the steering rack, but the steering rack was completely fine! A quick look at the lower intermediate steering shaft revealed the play was coming from a worn out u-joint. Although the u-joint could be replaced, it’s far easier and less time consuming to replace the entire shaft. It required a lot hammering and prying, but I was able to replace the shaft without unbolting and moving the steering rack. 💪

This is the perfect video, good thing it pop up on my main screen. I thought my steering wheel had play because my car is really low, it bothers me when I'm driving. I'm gonna try replacing my steering shaft.

my 95 Civic with recently replaced rack and pinion (reman) and has this issue.
That’s a lot of rust we are looking at….of course can be just on the surface but after you showed the coupling how it’s nearly through…quite shocking for an off road vehicle not that old.
I can't figure out my Silverado it needed it but I literally replaced everything from the shaft to the bearing to the pitman idler arm control arms everything

Might be the gear box itself. Just had the gearbox swapped on my 97 burb, did the trick. Now if I can solve the no start/starter misalignment. New cap, rotor, distributor, plugs, wires, cam sensor, crank sensor, egr valve,pcv valve, temp sensor, and new starter. No luck. Dreading the flexplate being bad, picked up a 97 ram 5.9 for less than what having the flexplate replaced. It's crusty as hell and has some slopping steering, but it runs well and it indeed drives, little wobbly and crunchy, but it goes.

That is a lot of rust for that year of truck! I would be spraying the underbody if you live somewhere that they use a lot of salt. That one is bad. You're probably going to have your brake lines, transmission lines and maybe even fuel lines rust out on you.
I own a 2010 Dodge Journey SE just had the lower left n right control arm replaced, rack n pinion with tire rods.
Then after just a couple weeks I went over a median which knocked my struts out of alignment which I had done in 4/9/2021 and CV axle shaft left/right side which also is out of alignment & broke, possibly replace wheel hub not sure if mechanic said bearings too.
I've noticed after having rack n pinion replaced my steering wheel has much play, alignment off and steering wheel when car off in park has much play n knocking also.
Not sure what that means as I don't have money to replace anything else right now as I've bn homeless for past almost 19 yrs, due to my duddy devil Darth Vader puppet master troublemaker n mummy blaming me for her choices decisions or there lack of on her part as mom not putting her children first.
As for a nut or bolt, Drill a corner of the nut or bolt just a notch to give it some grip when using the size ratchet tool to grab onto if rusted or stripped...
Anyway, updates I have had to replace heater coil gear assembly, left and right lower control arms, rack n pinion, left right CV axle, stabilizer links, replaced front struts.
Now, I have a thermostat leak & other antifreeze leak somewhere. Not to mention, repairs still needed in front of this vehicle are steering, camshaft, pulley and belts, water pump, radiator and or hoses, wheel hub & bearings, brakes & rotors calipers.
Only God knows what else is needed in rear suspension and interior replaced.
Don't have money for another used vehicle
My duddy & his adjustment bureau clan of dark forces meddling interfering obstructing ruining everything in my life and I'm sick n effing tired of the costs and they keep making one thing after another.
