Gabor Maté's book The Scattered Mind really helped me deal with ADHD more than any medication ever did, and then after watching Bad Hasbara and the Grayzone it turns out his sons are really cool too! What a nice family.

This is the first time I believe we received such a deep personal view of Aaron's life in an interview. He has a great attitude that shows his love, respect and concern for his brother. He is also very courteous and a good listener.
I appreciate Nick hosting such a fantastic interview.

  • @YourMajesty143
    @YourMajesty143 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

As a progressive, I knew of Aaron through leftist news channels and as a Palestinian, I've known about Dr. Gabor through his advocacy against the occupation. But I was lucky enough to be freshly introduced to Daniel through an interview he did with Katie Halper back in December or January, and then of course, Bad Hasbara. Very refreshing to hear them speak - albeit, I wish they spoke more. I felt that the host of this podcast, although asking very good questions, felt the need to insert himself into every framework that he was setting up, and often going on for far too long to explain his perspective, before we finally could hear the guests speak. I think there are ways to cut back on that, so that us listeners don't feel like we're eavesdropping on a therapy session where the host is oversharing his personal life. Maybe that's the gift of the Mates, they're good listeners and patient enough to let the host fill up the space. For the benefit of us listeners though, we'd love another interview round, but with perhaps more listening on the host's part - at the very least, so that the guests are given space to respond to the questions without any preceding framework that could potential lead their answers. I'm curious if their responses to the questions would've been different or more in-depth. This was a nice interview nonetheless, please have them back on.

Yeah, I hear you. I felt the same. The host is not the same calibre as his guests.
But I doubt the guest responses would have been different unless the questions had been different. I think they’re focused on the questions and answering them.
Nice to see how much attention the brothers are paying to each other. They’re not focused on the host, really…they’re focused on each other and I think, they’re thinking deeply about their answers and sharing their honest answers.

Since becoming a mom 8 years ago, if I were to consider anyone my parenting "guru" it would be Dr. Gabor Mate. It's been so fascinating to start following the work of Aaron and Daniel since October. They're both building on their dad's legacy in their own unique ways. Honestly, in a world that feels mad and so upsetting to live with the daily fact that our children get to be tucked into warm beds at night with full bellies while the children of Gaza sleep on the street, starving and orphaned, the awareness your family produces in different ways is so helpful to us continuing to bear witness and do what we can in our little corners of the world. Thank you 🙏🏻

23:23 as a parent, i hope that my kids will always be able to tell me how much I hurt them, and wasn’t there for them, and how I impacted them badly, and what they needed from me that I never gave them.
I think this because I have wounds from my childhood, and I can’t talk to my parents and I can’t talk to 3 out of 5 siblings, because to be angry or honest or open really hurts them…they cannot bear it, and it is destructive of the structure they built and rely on even now as adults. Took me a long time to accept it. I wanted a resolution with my parents and siblings. But it doesn’t need to go that way. I found peace without it.
But I don’t wish the same for my kids. And I don’t want mine and their father’s dysfunction to impact my kids relationships with each other…and a large part of that, is letting them take out their anger and frustration where it belongs.
So, I don’t think it’s narcissistic if your dad to say he hopes his kids can be angry at him. I think that’s him showing his love not just for you, but the love that exists (can exist) between siblings.

Great interview--there have never been more people traumatized on a daily basis just by watching the daily physical trauma of Gaza, as well as other world events displayed every moment on these devices we carry. One of my trauma work-throughs is to get away from the screens on a regular basis, while judiciously using them for beneficial content that helps us deal with the horrors of psychopaths in power. Thank you for this thoughtful interview with these truth-tellers.

First time I've seen this channel. I watch Bad Hasbara, so that's probably why the algorithm led me here. I don't quite understand the purpose of the channel, though -- but I'm curious about Nick's perspective. I think we may share some things. I would call myself a leftist Christian, and for many years I was a strong believer in nonviolence as a method of change. I first got interested in Christianity via people like the Berrigans, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton, and I got started doing civil disobedience while I was still in high school. Eventually I ended up living in Catholic Worker houses for several years. But this was long, long ago. I then took an unfortunate detour through quasi-conservative Catholicism. These days I would still call myself Christian, but I'm more interested in what it would take to make a revolution than I used to be, and I like Marxism the more I find out about it. I'm wondering if topics like these are to be found elsewhere on this channel.
In any case, I appreciate this interview. Thanks.

Hi! Thanks for watching and for your kind words:) You asked about the purpose of this channel so I figure I'd share some thoughts. First, the stated purpose in our bio is "We are a global community of people who give a damn!" Second, most of the content on here are from our conversations on the Let's Give A Damn podcast. But we will be making other kinds of content in the months to come. So, if you give a damn and want to leave the planet better than you found it, subscribe, stick around, and stay tuned!

I'd like to see them interact more with Palestinians. Somehow the discussion mostly remains among Western Jews which is very peculiar to me. Why not set the example and engage with Palestinians more?

I think Daniel mentions he has gotten to know Palestinians living in historic Palestine, whom he now calls close friends. He also has people he is close to living in Israel, which I think he also mentioned when discussing Irans response.
Maybe there are conversations out there with Palestinians fitting your requirement - I'd recommend Palestine Deep Dive - Maybe it's an 'algorithm ' thing?
I'm not sure what you want exactly, and maybe you didn't mean it as a criticism, but the way I understood this conversation was simply, unconsciously, as just listening to three interesting and eloquent people conversing.
Aside from the one direct question regarding "Are you practising" your religion, no other cultural or religious references stood out for me. What did stand out was their learned knowledge, their individual thoughts, what shaped those thoughts, and how fallable they each are as human beings. This was a powerful philosophical and practical conversation. What's not to love? ❤

I know this is kinda uncouth but...what's that hook at the beginning?? A nice beat as a lead in!

Great conversation. I believe Aaron and Daniel's work is important and a great contribution to the public. I only wish that Aaron would be more aware when he speaks of Trump, specifically at this fragile time in this particular election year - we in the US who are not-bigoted, who are progressive, who want to see justice for all know that a second Trump presidency would wreak havoc not only on our fragile 'democracy' at home but on the world at large - this is not a time to say 'Trump would have done better than Biden' as Aaron said at one point re Palestine. In fact not only would have Trump done far worse re slaughtering innocent Palestinians than genocide Joe has done, but if god forbid trump gets elected, he will do far, far worse still than Biden has done which is a horrifying prospect. Again, I truly value Aaron (and Daniel's) work and contributions in their professional lanes, however please be mindful of being cavalier when talking about Trump's capabilities and intentions: they are nefarious to put it mildly.

Loved this but at the end, voting for lesser evil is still voting for evil. Things could change very quickly if people just understood that and voted for a party that actually wants to look after the residents of their country and end the war and interference in other countries.
Matte bro's, please adopt that mentality and share it.
