  • Mega-bestselling author and spiritual teacher Brené Brown recently came out with a statement about the Gaza genocide, though she didn't use that language to describe it. Somewhat-bestselling author Daniel Maté responds at length here. Originally posted on Instagram: danielbmate

      Having a Romany grandfather whose family was killed in death camps this excuse has always been hollow, the holocaust has always been heavily politicized, including the erasure of ethnic Poles and Romany. I got laughed at for mentioning the ethnic Poles, they know exactly what their intent is, they really don't care about holocaust history unless they can use it as leverage. Currently people want to erase pacifist Jews as well, pretending these people have any empathy will just ensnare you in their gaslighting.

      There is weakness in some of your argument an protestations. The abject violence, especially sexual directed at those in Israel on Oct 7 was not just a 'liberation' strategy. While acknowledging the rightful rage, desparation, and desires of Palestinians for justice and a concern for their suffering in the vengeful reaction of Israel's government, why can't you show outrage over the ideological hate and barbaric actions,rapes, torture, encouraged by Hamas and other groups in their assault on Oct 7? Their actions were not just a spontaneous riot under tension, not just an intifada. You ignore the leadership, planning, intent, intimidation, and religious repression imposed on the Palestinians and also real evidence ( not just IDF propaganda) of using civilian homes, schools, hospitals as cover. Use of fear and suppression of opposition within. Recruiting aid workers for murder. Your outrage in this emotional response has lost my respect or ability to listen. Your disdain and superiority is what Is conveyed without an ability to show compassion to those who 'also' suffered on Oct 7 alongside the Palestinians caught in terror by the failure of their leaders to negotiate or surrender. Several who sit in luxury and have while their people were suffering. Their failure to use more resources to build up, educate, innovate
      ,rather than entrench and focus on terror. Your brutality comes through in your speech, not any respect or consideration for gray or any position other than what you proclaim. You are indeed coming across misogynist especially by not even acknowledging the terror, rapes , and cheering on of cruelty, not acknowledging the accounts witnessed and documented. It need not be one or the other. The oppression and incursions by Israel need to stop. It's murder campaign is neither just nor perhaps even effective in it's stated purpose. Too much damage covering up years of bad policies and protecting power of a would be dictator too. The provocations by holding power over Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza need to stop for there to be dignity. Yet to not call out the brutality and antisemitism of Hamas and other Islamic jihadists etc shows a willful blindness on YOUR part. Perhaps your own desparation to have a simple good/evil split and side to align with to feel redeemed for your prior zionist upbringing. While i wish for freedom for Palestinian people and walls to come down, in no way as female or Jewish would I want to live under a regime led by Hamas or proxies of Iran, those who have no interest in tolerance. Oh and you overide the desires of millions of Palestinians within Israel who would choose it's (now stressed) democracy over the other, and a more peaceful path to reconciliation and restitution. How about giving and recognizing their voices in this matter too?

    I honestly clicked on this video not knowing who you were but as a Palestinian-American who is a huge Brene Brown fan, I solute you sir for calling her out and using your platform to speak truth to this matter. I hope Brene watches this video and really takes your words in and takes action for the better. On the off chance that you read this comment Brene, I am a Palestinian American educator living in Houston. I’ve read all your books. I sang your praises so much that my school district began sending leadership teams to go see you speak.
    But this man speaks God’s honest truth. You’ve dismissed the Palestinians and our diaspora and the nearly 80 years of suffering under a brutal, terroristic regime. You have marginalized us in your statement. Of all the people to speak out on this, I think my heart is most broken by you. Please do better and learn more.

      76 years ago, Truman & Congress violated Magna Carta principles. They unilaterally removed Americans' inalienable fundamental right to freedom from religion. Read it on Wikipedia and replace the characters with the current actors. King = Truman
      French guy = South Africa
      Rebels =Palestinians
      America was created post Magna Carta and multiple holy wars in mankind's rear view mirror.
      1st Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
      Was to protect us from this because in order to have a free society, one must first have freedom from religion.

    I love it when people who truly understand the power of language to influence take the time to really analyse and deconstruct a communication as Daniel has done here. She is a writer and she is well versed in examining thoughts and emotions. She was deliberately couching and veiling her language to give an Islamophobic message. She has no excuse.

      I just wish he had acknowledged that language most certainly is a form of violent control also in personal relationships within the larger power structures he talks about, especially but not only in abusive relationships. This is quite different from accepting the notion that people shouldn't hold each other to account with language that causes discomfort.

This isn't a for or against either of you, but I realized while watching this how screwed up our thinking is, which probably applies to almost everything we think we know. We have been molded by so many nefarious institutions and groups, (that influence what we call our culture) it behooves us to be very alert and relentlessly skeptical to our conditioning and biases that we use to spin our reality. I was clear after her first paragraph that she knew very little about what's happened in Palestine. Ultimately, she would done more for herself by simply writing CEASE-FIRE NOW! And leaving it at that. But many are being "canceled" and/or fired for saying or writing just that.
    Her statement was a huge disappointment and while she talks of "Daring to lead" and "leading with courage," and fitting vs belonging and changing who we are to fit in, she choose to do that--fit in, rather than do the work and make up her own mind.

Besides shows a lack of empathy for the victims of Oct 7 and also many Israeli's who work for peace and seek justice, just because the government is indeed oppressive. Regardless of the atrocities of a right wing and violent fundamentalistic government, do the people deserve to be targeted? The concept of using Human Shields is only ever a "useful" concept if your enemy respects the civilian population you intend to use in that way. Given Israel has been shown not to respect Palestinian civilians, using them as shields has been rendered completely pointless and ineffective. This has been evident for 75 years and therefore the Israeli allegation of Hamas using human shields is a moot point.

    • @saoirsecameron
      @saoirsecameron 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I would say in addition, that in the case of Gaza, Israel has packed it so tightly with those displaced during the Nakba (I think 70% of the population are descendants of refugees), that it is they and not Hamas who is creating human shields out of Palestinian civilians. I don’t know how anyone expects any resistance movement to prosecute a guerilla campaign entirely away from civilian infrastructure in the most densely populated strip of land on the planet. As people under occupation and invasion, they are not the ones who choose the terrain of combat.
