How to Replace a Water Shut Off Valve Under Sink | Water Leaking from Supply Valve

  • We discovered a 20 + year old water stop valve that was leaking under our bathroom sink. Since trying to find a universal valve repair kit is quite difficult, we opted to replace the leaking supply valve.
    We used a Watts Aqualock push fit valve to speed the repair. Check Amazon for that and similar water stop supply valves:
    Watts AquaLock (3539-10)- Large Diameter Stop Valve/Shut Off Valve- 1/2" CTS/Single
    amzn.to/41F1bt5
    Watts
    959098 Aqualock 3539-10 (P-650) Straight Valve, 1/2"
    amzn.to/3tmB5P3
    A similar product is made by Sharkbite :
    SharkBite 1/2 x 3/8 Inch Compression Straight Stop Valve, Quarter Turn, Push to Connect Brass Plumbing Fitting, PEX Pipe, Copper, CPVC, PE-RT, HDPE, 23037-0000LF
    amzn.to/3vpyzZ6
    The process takes a littletime but is straight forward. Sink water supply shut offs will vary. Ours had a 3/8 inch copper line from the top of the shut off valve to the faucet. At the bottom of the shut off valve, we had a 1 inch copper pipe. Both ends of the existing supply valves were compression fittings.
    THANKS FOR WATCHING!

    Lowes canceled the installation because they did not know how to pull it up like you did. I was going to call a plumber before I found your channel; now, I will install my dishwasher myself. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Get something called an olive puller - it uses the retaining nut to pull that brass ferule off

    Instead of cutting the ferrule or copper pipe , use a Ferrule Puller to remove the compression ring .

    I used shark bites on a water heater install 3 years now zero issues. These hardware innovations are making it easy for homeowners to do simple fixes and save a lot of money.

      That’s possibly why they get some naysayers chiming in. As innovations happen and maybe some in trades feel threatened, you get some negativity. But innovations will keep coming. We have always had good experiences with them as well.
      Thx for the comments.

      Before you go to the last resort of replacing the valve you can try tightening the packing nut first. Quite honestly this might have solved this persons problem.

    Question - what size copper pipe is that? I have been changing my valves and I am getting the same exact size valves you have and they are all fitting loose. I got sharkbites and those do work but why they be lose? Same size valve as the one I removed and the ones removed definitely were not loose. I cannot figure it out.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is 1/2 inch copper pipe. The shark bites are made to spin around the pipe but made to resist pulling off - they do not slide off easily. When you turn the water on, go slow and look for leaks. Leaks mean -do it over.

    When should copper pipes be completely replaced?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Copper lasts a very long time. They are also simple to repair.
      The only time we’ve replaced all copper pipes was when we purchased a house from a bank that didn’t winterize it. So the water in the pipes froze & split the pipes in multiple locations. We were chasing endless leaks inside walls.
      It might be worth replacing a small section under sink if you had a leak but throughout a house ? I’d keep them. Just my 2 cents.

    what happens if the pipe is broken? Mine broke just minutes ago and it doesn’t stick out like in the video. Do you have any tips on what I can do or do I have to replace the pipe by calling a plumber?

      @Housebarons  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can diy a pipe replacement… depends on how handy you are. TH-cam videos are very helpful.
      But If that is not in your wheel house - then handyman or plumber.

    I turned off the water supply to the house and the hot water is still leaking. Do I have to drain my water heater to replace the hot water shut off valve under the sink?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      If you have sinks or pipes above the valve - then that might still be draining due to gravity,
      If your water heater is upstairs , I still don’t think it would siphon.
      Maybe let the valve drain into a bucket or pan, see if it eventually stops after the pipes empty…
      Hopefully that is what’s going on.
