  • My series of "New Forest Walks" with my dog, Logan (the Whippet) continues with an exploration of the Blackwater Tall Tree Trail (near Lyndhurst, Hampshire). During our walk we come across one of the tallest trees in England, a WW2 Bomb crater and finish our journey with a stroll around the Arboretum. Oh...and we meet a couple of cute pigs as well!
In the video, I state that one of the Sequoia trees is the tallest tree in England however I have since read that there is a Douglas Fir at Dunster, Somerset that was measured at 61.3M in 2011. Indeed there may be at least 9, if not more, trees taller (in England) than the one I pointed out in the video!

Used to live in Bournemouth for 11 years, it was my routine to go to the New Forest every free weekend. Thank you for that nice video.

Once again a great walk, regarding the bomb crater, a series of bombs were dropped over Lyndhurst, one i believe is encased in concrete in high street, being too dangerous to remove. Others in the footy ground and each side of Mums house in Shaggs Meadow , none went off , lucky me ! maybe a story to look into, when you get time, regards tone

During the war there were a number of RAF airfields in the forest some are now campsites maybe the bomb was meant for one of those.
Brilliant video I always enjoy the Tall trees walk.

We did this walk yesterday. Be aware that the path from Blackwater car park to the East is very soggy and muddy especially to its end where it turns north east. The walk to the west of Ornamental Drive is better and stays dry. Car parking at Brock Hill car park also on the Tall Trees route and toilets at Blackwater car park.

That was lovely Dave. It looks as if the trails have been prepared with a lot of love and thought. The beautifully illustrated information boards were a delight, although possibly nor very hard wearing.
I had hoped to catch up with you on the Oct BE walk, but I couldn't make it.

I agree with you about the wooden information boards - some of them were in need of replacing now. I expect the trails get busy during the height of the tourist season but Logan & I appeared to have the Arboretum to ourselves at one stage - good timing!

This one has been added to my list of places to visit. Really interesting and informative but I do hope I don’t meet one of those squirrels Dave!

Thanks Ian. Yes, I think Logan was a little concerned at the possible size of those Squirrels!
