The FEF-3 is actually programmed to break if it reaches above 140 MPH. For it to have broken mid-race means that for some time it exceeded 140 MPH, quite impressive for such a big old steamer.
Some things I would like to mention is that the 844 does actually have a higher top speed on level track. Something did happen with 844 in this video, but I’m not asking for a rematch. 844 also had to slow down much sooner because it weighs more than double the Mallard, Mallard being 104 tons and 844 being 223 tons. I’m just happy this race happened even if my all time fav engine lost the race.

if you consider whats being raced the 844 actually weighs in at 414 tons and mallard at 184 tons.

Basic engine physics:
-Larger loco with larger wheels= longer acceleration rate
-Larger loco with large wheels at high momentum= more speed
-Larger loco with a lot of momentum= Longer stopping distance
And whatever happened to 844, I'd say she blew her steam chest. The wide open throttle with probably the most minimal of valve cutoff increased the steam chest pressure which was too much.

It wasn't because of the pressure, it was the speed of the pistons and rods - the 844 was designed for 120 mph, but it's modelled so that at more than 140 mph the gear and pistons start to suffer damage. and eventually things like the valves, packing glands, lubrication, etc. fail.
I still think she won only because of the speed she achieved which was greater than the mallards.

When the 844 was smoking badly the problem was that the pistons burst so that's why it was smoking badly

Grand Junction Model Railway it’s a design flaw with the engine. In the end, 844 would’ve won, but it exceeded it’s max speed (mallard did the same thing on its speed record run) all 844 had to do was exceed the limit of Mallards speed and hold it, but that’s not how the program works in the game. I believe in real life, 844 could more than likely beat mallard. If not the T1 5550 definitely will

The 844 takes longer to speed up and slow down because of how much heavier it is. This test also shows that the 844 is capable of higher speeds than mallard is, but since it was designed to withstand a max speed of 120mph it cannot run at those speeds safely.
Actually designed to go over 130 mph. Her top was 120.

Shame train simulator doesn't have Class J #611, as she was the pinnacle of American steam technology and was designed to achieve speeds similar to Mallard.
844 is a FEF 3 class 4-8-4 and it still operates today! It was built on December 24th 1944.

Mallard ran 126 in real life, but they had a problem with overheating the 3rd cylinder, infact right after hitting 126 they had to shop the mallard due to damage

844 would've won if she didn't slow down, she has over twice Mallard's horsepower and tractive effort, as for in real life top speeds the Union Pacific never recorded it so it remains unknown, the FEFs were built to handle to 120 mph so that's a rough estimate. Also, I can say for certain that she didn't break.

No it doesn't. The Mallard class' top speed is only 94mph. The Mallard did 126 because it went down hill when it set the record. Also, the Mallard broke down when it ran that fast because it wasn't built to go speeds over 95mph. FEF3's did over 100mph on average in passenger service back in the old days and have a theoretical top speed of 130mph.
Plus, the FEF-3 was designed with engineering tolerances to allow it to operate safely at speeds of 120mph. There are unofficial accounts of engineers on fast mail trains running at 120mph or more to make up time after delays. They could also do that with much heavier loads than the typical trains running in the UK. The train that Mallard was hauling when it broke the record (and going downhill) was the equivalent of less than 6 lightweight UP passenger cars. The UP named trains that the FEF-3s hauled would have around 12 cars, sometimes as many as 17.

It's not faster and I'm not making excuses just because I'm "American", these are pure facts. No other class of British steam engines could get up to 100mph, except the Flying Scottsman. And first of all, I'm not even American, dickwad. Second, the Mallard can't do 126 on even level track, it could only do 94mph. You're just as ignorant as all the other British steam engine fanboys I've seen, if not, even dumber.

A train that isn't streamlined does not affect its top speed asshat. The Mallard did 126 going down a fucking hill, dumbass. You should also try and fix your grammar before arguing. On level track, the Mallard's class of steam engine did 94mph. That's the fastest the Mallard did on a level surface. The fastest 844 has been recorded to do on level surface was 120mph, and it has a theoretical top speed of 130mph.

The cylinder didn't burst, 844's steam chest blew. The pressure in the cutoff valve built up because of the minimal throttle input and caused the valve to blow. The 844 would have been fine if the Steam pressure was lower.

The 844 had stimulated to much damage to its pistons and cylinders due to excessive speed or going over 140 mph and since it had stimulated so much damage its stuff to make it work started to fail like its steam valve

I don't like mallard. Mallard wins at everything just because it is light which makes it stop faster. if this were a drag race where there were a finish line, Mallard would get obliterated. I would just love to see Mallard lose completely in a drag race against 844 for my satisfaction.

844: Because it was the first to stop, not to make it to a certain point first. And if you considered that role, I definitely would have won and don't forget I weight over twice your weight so I have to slow down quicker.

What looks like happened with the 844 is the packing got loose and started leaking steam out of the Cylinder heads. This happens when there is too much pressure to the cylinders and causes steam leaks. The 844 would have easily beaten Mallard and in real life it actually could but Mallard still holds the record.

NeilTheBoxTankEngine the only reason Mallard is the fastest in the first place is because it was going down a damn hill! Plus the center cylinder failed while it was doing it. Union Pacific 844 on the other hand was designed for 120 mph but only got up to 110 mph when it was on fast mail trains back in the 40's 50's and 60's
There in Train Simulator 2020, the Kenny the UP 844 had false speed it rises up to 180 kph!
Actually, it is very likely that many American steam locomotives have broken Mallards speed record, not because of superior engineering, but because in designing the engines the Americans have a lot less restrictions in every facet. IE the Pennsylvania Railroad T1.
You know that Mallard is the fastest steam engine in the world because it was literally going downhill during the test.

I love the big boy, but the Challenger is the biggest steam train that is running currently.

The 844 was “smoking” ( its steam ) because it burst a cylinder head from excessive speed ( around 120 MPH ) the safety valve is on the top of the engine and that goes off at 300 PSI ITS NOT SMOKE!!!
Well, UP 844 has 3,500hp but is twice as heavy. Mallard has 2,400hp but is smaller by far. This actually was a pretty tight race.
The Up 844 blew her piston Safety Valve because of the steam pressure not being released so the valve burst, and started losing to much steam in turn she slowed do enormously. I'm surprised that her piston Safety was the only thing that burst, with all that pressure her boiler safety could have burst and her boiler would have exploded. Just being realistic here.
I think I know what the problem is with the Union Pacific 844. I think it had to much power and broke herself when you put 135% power

Never underestimate the great union Pacific 844
you know what i've been meaning to tell this for a long time about why the American trains are failing to win against the British locomotives. It's because the American trains are alot heavier than the British locomotives and take a longer time to stop, while the British trains are light and can stop in just a few seconds while American trains take minutes to stop. This is why i've been calling all your races unfair and i think you should change your rules so that they have to cross a certain point instead of whoever stops first is the winner.

Due to the tremendous power you put them on, 844 had to build alot of steam pressure due to the amount of power set, and the strength of it, once the 844 started to steam up from the pistons that was the steam pressure being relieved as the steam blow down powered up the pistons, it kicked up its speed.

i think the reason 844 was steaming out of his cylinders is because theres too much steam going from the cylinder to the funnel, so steam went out of the cylinder because there was too much steam, but idk why the 844 went much faster.
She was going so fast that it damaged the valves and rods, and broke the packing glands and cylinder caps, with steam escaping from the cylinders. However, the AI ignores the damage and keeps on going. It happens at over 140mph, so 844 must have been going at over 140mph. Mallard should have broken too, but the model isn't as advanced and doesn't model that.

Yeah 844 holds the record as being one of if not the fastest steam engines in history with a offical record of 126.7mph and a unoffical record of around 140ish mph. Sadly the engineers couldnt push these babys to their max because of railroad limits.

I think 844 was smoking because its water ejector fell off. Please hurry up with the race with Union Pacific 7029 versus A4 No. 4496 Dwight D Eisenhower, and make sure 7029 is two toned gray and A4 Dwight D Eisenhower is LNER blue.
