  • I've taken the clip uploaded by Adam Swanson and corrected the pitch. This meant slowing down the video by about six percent to keep everything in sync. I was unable to do much about the image quality.

BRILLIANT sound quality, but I'm also amazed that footage exists of the great Mr. Lambert... I can see why he engaged in cutting contests with Art Tatum.. thanks for this!

He is obviously a great musician. However, I am reminded of Sidney Bechet talking about his second recording with Louis Armstrong. He said Louis was under so much pressure to show off with High c's etc. that the muscianship of the recording suffered. It wasn't up to their first recording's level when he could just play.

Audio is strangley good, this isn't the original recording is it? Did someone play over it in sync?

      Hi Piotr,
The audio came from a high-quality original recording of the Stride Allstars concert that came directly off the sound board at Newport. It’s really Donald Lambert-- finally in high fidelity! I don't remember who uploaded the soundboard recording, (I think I originally found it in FLAC format on Soundcloud) and I don't know if it's still available anywhere. (It is! The complete audio, with performances by Lambert, Eubie Blake, Willie the Lion Smith and others, has been uploaded by the indispensable Sterling "Sugar Bear" Mosher. Here's the TH-cam link: th-cam.com/video/1XPh1ncErJc/w-d-xo.html.) I thought it I could sync it with the low-quality kinescope of the event that was uploaded by Adam Swanson. The kinescope, actually about a 5th generation VHS dub, turned out to be about 6% speeded up! So I slowed down the video to make it sync with the audio.

@@unigonfilms99 Wow! Isn't it nice when you can find studio quality recordings like that? It seems that Rob Thomas has no taken up doing the job most of the sound engineers at the festivals used to do!
I suspected the film was dubbed, the image is washed out badly and the whole thing is warping all over, it would be so nice to get the original tapes...

@@PiotrBarcz There may not be any original tapes, except for the audio. This looks to me to be a kinescope, where a film camera shoots the image off a video monitor. Video tape machines were still expensive and therefore fairly rare in 1960. Maybe a film original or print will turn up. Even that wouldn't be of the kind of quality we're used to now!
PS. I know Rob Thomas and have traded recordings with him over the years. He's very approachable.

@@unigonfilms99 Yeah, I hope at least a first gen dub of the tape might come up, instead of the 5th copy of a copy of a copy

@@PiotrBarcz The story with the original tapes is that they were lost in the mail I believe. Tragic.

Strange. Good sound, bad picture, but good enough. Seems to me that Stephanie Trick's hands move like his, and she did say she studied Lambert's music, and perhaps his playing technique. Worth studying , the guy was fabulous.

      They both have small hands

Johnny Guarnieri also hand small hands. I guess it's not necessarily an impediment where prodigious talent is involved.@@PiotrBarcz

@@unigonfilms99 Yeah I was saying that they're technique is likely similar due to their hand size and how it affects getting downbearing on the keys. I can be an impediment when playing certain types of music (like is the case with me) but usually it doesn't matter too much.
