Thank you for talking about this. I feel so guilty when I'm doing jigsaw puzzles, thinking that I should be doing something more productive, that I start feeling bad about myself, and then I can't even enjoy it. I am a philosophy professor, and I there is always more reading and writing I could be doing instead.

I'm new to puzzles and I don't feel guilty. I chose this as an activity to calm my mind and relieve anxiety ,among other things, and it's working wonders. Being productive is all good of course, but in a world where everything is an explosion of stuff and productiveness I think it is nice to step back and just enjoy something for the sake of it. Puzzles remind me a little of those Buddhist sand mandalas, a symbol of the transitory nature of material life. Anyways, any good tips on good crime podcasts?

One day I was wondering it there are better methods of doing puzzles so I checked TH-cam and found your channel. I just love your channel. Keep it up!! Thank you.

Interesting video! I'm a knitter and it's not uncommon for someone to see a finished project then say "Gee, you must have lot of time on your hands." But they are often folks who watch 3 or 4 hours of TV per day, so I'm not fussed. To each her own! I'm glad I started doing a few puzzles, I find it to be a great stress-reliever.

Our world is too busy; we've forgotten the art of stillness. Doing puzzles help me focus on something creative, and brings me to a state of stillness. It gives me time to percolate, to think of the little things or of nothing, and gives a fresher perspective on my list of things to do afterwards!

I don't think I have ever put a puzzle together. Your channel was recommended to me last night as I couldn't sleep for a third night in a row. You beautifully explained why you puzzle and it made sense to my brain. After downloading the app I Love Hue, it also clicked for me. To organize one small thing makes me feel like I have control over one small area. My world was made better because of you. Your puzzling has impacted others. Thank you for all the work that goes into sharing yourself with us!

If puzzles make you feel happier and less stressed then you're not wasting time any more than someone obsessed with running is wasting time by going for a jog. Working out your mind and mental health is just as, if not more, important than working out your body and physical health!

Dear, sweet, Karen - you are one of my favorite youtubers. Please try not to feel guilty about your hobby. We don’t think that tv viewers or movie-goers are selfish or non-productive. And those who love to “sleep in” aren’t considered as such, either. I consider your puzzling hobby to be far more than the obvious activity. You are using your brain, improving your creativity by being in the zone, and you are keeping your body and soul healthy. So puzzle on, dear karen - I’ll bet most puzzlers agree with how much this hobby enhances our lives.

I suffer from anxiety disorder so it constantly feels like my brain is on over-drive. I’m always thinking about a million things at once, worrying about so many things. I love puzzles because it’s the only activity that make my brain “slow down” and focus only on one thing. Like you, I shut everything else out and focus on only what’s in front of me. In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with information, constantly late for everything, and always have millions of things to do, finding ways to “slow down” is actually good for your mental and physical health. This is why people meditate, workout, so yoga, paint... you should never feel guilty for doing something that helps keep yourself “together”. ♥️

My mom worked at a fancy retirement home when I was in elementary school and I would often go to work with her and make friends with the old folks. they had a billiard room and they would leave puzzles out for anyone to work on and I would just go in there and puzzle and residents would come in and out helping with the puzzle. That’s also how I learned to play checkers lol

I can relate to the "sorting out the chaos and putting it in order" satisfaction that comes from jigsaw puzzles. So that line from the buzzfeed article really hits home:
*JP won't solve your problems, but a JP is a problem you can solve*
Each life has its unique pressures and complex issues that need dealing with. For people who innately enjoy JPs, times spent puzzling feels like a productive (yes, productive) break from the demands of life.

  • @emiliana1767

The most comforting aspect to me is the certainty of a puzzle. So many things in life are in a constant waiting mode, where you have to just hope they work out at possibly a random time in the future. You have so little control over them and they could very well not work out, no matter how much time & effort you invested and no matter how important they were to you. But with a puzzle you KNOW it will work out, you will make it to the finish line and that feeling of completion is your gratification. Its so comforting to be absolutely sure, that no matter how big or complicated a puzzle is, you will reach the goal eventually 😉

No guilt, a puzzle and the time to put it together is a gift I give myself. Making order out of chaos is definitely part of the attraction. At it's nice to hear someone else admit to puzzle possession. How many times have I told myself "I'll go to bed when I find one more piece," and two hours later I'm still at it. And puzzling is a good diet aide, when I'm engrossed in a puzzle, I'm not snacking.

I know what you mean about the feeling that we should always be productive or helping someone else. I used to feel guilty about playing games on my phone or watching easy going TH-cam videos (about jigsaw puzzles ha ha).. and my partner asked me if I felt anxious while doing them things. I said no. She stayed that in that case I was being productive and helping someone else at the same time. As I was taking time to relax and not being anxious, it was productive as it is self care, and because I was relaxed and not anxious, she didn't have to worry about me. So a win win...

After completing a puzzle and putting it back into the box, ready to be puzzled again what have you accomplished?
Simple: You had a good time without lessening anyone else. That in itself is a skill that has been forgotten by most, which is one of the reasons so many people are so miserable.
And you've rekindled my old love for puzzling. I am turning 43 this year and I too have partially forgotten the aforementioned skill for the past 2 decades. However, this year I've been remembering and I've been doing better than in decades. For that I thank you. :-D

I can relate so much to much of what you were saying. The organization things (but not being neat all the time), the organizing by color and good hue vision. I love colors, the right color combination can make me so happy. And also the creative process vs 'mindless' activities, the ones where you don't have to think about the end goal, there's no real decision making (sure, there are different ways to go about getting to the end, but there is only one correct end result, so how you want to get there is just preference). Realizing this helped me understand why I've done a lot of jigsaw puzzles in different stages of my life - to help my mental health. Other activities I've found that work in the same way for me are Diamond Painting and games like Powerwash simulator.
The whole constant productivity mindset really doesn't help us. It steals the joy out of things, joy and relaxation that we need in order to be productive as well. Burnout is no joke. Most of us are not aware of how we're depriving ourselves of what we need to keep functioning for the sake of productivity, career advancement, living up to society's norms, until it's too late and the system just shuts down. Unfortunately that was the case for me. My concentration just broke. And I've put a lot of pressure on myself to try and get better so I could be productive again. It only hindered my recovery. Now I'm slowly, step by step, regaining my focus, exploring what I really want under all those layers of expectations and judgments I put upon myself. I'm using jigsaw puzzling in that process of rebuilding my concentration and focus.
Activities we enjoy, we do just for ourselves, may not be productive in the strictest sense of the word. But they help us to remain productive, in whatever way feels right to you, in the long term.

When you make a puzzle, you may not be solving any major problems of the world, but you are simultaneously exercising and relaxing your brain. You are using problem solving skills, trying new things, testing your patience and resilience. And, of course, self care is just as important as saving the world! Can’t help others if you can’t help yourself.

Karen, you have stumbled across a truth most never comprehend in a lifetime - the importance of an activity that induces 'slowtime'. The ability to be able to step out of everyday activity/productivity and steal some space and time is invaluable for mental health. I have always enjoyed activities that send me into this state - jigsaws are one excellent method but there are many others. When busy we are merely someone else's tool, but when we contemplate and listen while puzzling we are our own independent entity. I love podcasting while puzzling also - I get losing track of time with that. So many thoughtful comments, thanks for sharing.

I've been getting good puzzles very cheap from Goodwill. I've had good luck with the pieces being there, especially with the ravensburgur. I found a cool older Milton Bradley that I took a chance on, and my friend asked me if I would be mad if all the pieces weren't there. I said, "no, I will have gotten $2 worth of entertainment from it" But, all the pieces were there! So, yay!

Thank you so much for sharing! Your channel is what got me into puzzles & it’s super inspiring! I feel that the way you’ve described yourself and the enjoyment of being fully submerged in the puzzle is totally me!! Thanks for expressing this so precisely! Keep on doing so great, and I hope you’ll keep enjoy puzzling as much as making these awesome videos. Xoxo

Hey Karen - I just found your channel and I love you and your videos! This video resonated with me so much. I’ve always been casually into puzzles but recently I’ve been so entranced by puzzles that I’ve done at least one 1000 piece puzzle almost every week. I get into that trance-like state that you’re talking about, where nothing else matters but the puzzle, and the guilt is so real. I’ve decided not to buy another puzzle until I’ve completed some of the other tasks in my life so things are under control. But just want to say thanks for sharing this video and sharing your process with us.

Karen, that was a great video! I totally understand what you are saying. Puzzles are a great way to stay out of trouble, lol. Some people don't "get" the draw of puzzling, but there are plenty of things most folks do that I don't quite "get" either. To each his own.

Hi there Karen my favorite youtuber! A great way to double up your productive time while puzzleing is listen to books on tape. The library rents them out for a little small fee. Also I have found several new puzzles still in the wrapper at goodwill and thrift shops. Most of the time all the pieces are still there which is super surprising and so good. Happy puzzleing!

I've been doing puzzles for over ten years, almost every day. I garden , I paint (oils), I watch movies, and I never feel guilty. I'm retired, and it doesn't bother me if people think I'm wasting my time. It's my time to use, whatever others might think, and puzzling is my way to relax and unwind. Keep up your hobby - don't worry about what someone else might think. I really enjoy your videos, too!

So many of us haven't a clue what it is that makes us happy and it was insightful to hear you able to articulate what puzzling does for you. I found myself internally defending you against your guilt. You have noting to apologize for in finding something that provides you so much satisfaction. And I appreciate that you've found a way to share a little of that with us. You are a delight to watch and listen to.
Puzzling filled a lot of the down time during COVID and I appreciate that. And in the course of doing those, I discovered you. So that's two wins.

I just found your channel and I agree on so many points. I don’t do jigsaw puzzles, but I love building lego sets. Theyre so great and basically just mindless bliss for me. I’m also an artistic type and it’s so nice to leave my piano, guitar, musescore, logic, etc behind for an hour or two and just build something. I always get so excited to finally get to the end result, even thought you know from the picture on the box what it’ll look like in the end, it’s so fun to finally get there and see it for yourself

Karen, love doing puzzles, some of my favorite jigsaws are the minature world's smallest 1000 piece puzzle. They come in a tin so pieces are safe. I have redone these puzzles many many times. Even to the point of using a magnifying glass.
I love these, you should give one a try,

Everytime i doing a jigsaw puzzle i think a lot about my life. Where i am standing, what i wish for my future life, how i can change it if i feel bad and so on. It reall gives me the time to think about myself, which i wont do in my "normal" life. So the only thing i feel guilty about is to use our table where we normally eat. It helps me a lot to get lost into the jigsaw puzzle, think about stuff and finish it off. It feels like you completed something. (The same reason why i only play videogames with an end screen or credits. Otherwise it will feel like its not over yet even you are at the end.)
I absolutely love this feeling: Happy about finishing it and at the same time sad because finishing it. Its a great but strange feeling. :D

    Thanks Karen for sharing...
    A couple thoughts..
Never feel bad for relaxing.. a person who doesn't slow down some times isn't going to be healthy.
I don't think Jigsaw Puzzles are a hobby only for the rich.. comparatively they can be very inexpensive (cost per hour) compared to many other hobbies, and used puzzles cost almost nothing...
Don't ever feel like you "need to create content", just to satisfy viewers... Unless you need the income from TH-cam, just post when your'e in the mood. Your sub's won't abandon you for some other "fancy Puzzle Channel", if you take a break from posting..

YES BEAD SORTING! I had tons of beads as a kid and I rarely made any actual jewelry with them but I would sit and sort them for hours! There was also a neat board game/activity called Playful Patterns where you used colorful foam shapes to recreate pictures and I could do that for hours too! Now all my color/puzzle/activities are digital.

That's productive and useful to your community. Honestly, I am glad you are here because I have always loved putting together puzzles and your enthusiasm is infectious. I saw the movie "Puzzle" and enjoyed it. Thanks again for your videos.

This was a great video, for me I bought my first puzzle shortly after watching one of your videos and I’ve had so much fun as I get more and more landmarks in the puzzle and I’m now down to only 166 pieces left to put in! The best feeling for me is finding that one piece that just fits perfect! It’s like putting a coin into a candy machine and turning the knob and you hear that plink and you open the little hatch to get your candy it’s just an instant smile that makes you want to do it again 😌 I’m having a lot of fun looking through the remaining pieces and being like wait I’ve seen this and then finding the piece and putting it in the puzzle that’s the best feeling that makes me want to keep working on it and I’ve officially bought my second puzzle so I can start it after I finish this one 😌 got that areaware puzzle you recommended

Some good points that I too resonate with. Specifically, 1) great quote from that article, 2) love "order from chaos"; with ya'!, and 3) find it very satisfying that there is a "right answer" and also a definite "ending/solution", rather than a vague open-endedness.

I'm years late to this video but im glad i found it anyway... it makes me so happy that you were able to turn puzzling into a career now. Im hoping its not turning it into a chore for you!
Puzzling is something i only got into as an adult over the last month but it has been kinda literally saving my life. I have extreme anxiety amongst a lot of mental health issues and puzzling helps soothe me like nothing else ive ever tried.
Puzzling is also, for me, the best way to consume art. I actually spend time pondering over the details and really absorbing this piece of art someone poured so much time, energy, love, etc into... so much better than viewing for 5 seconds, hitting like, and then continuing to scroll...
I went to a concert for the first time in my life last month, and that experience made me really realize that producers are nothing without the consumers. Artists are nothing without their fans! So much of what is fun about a concert is feeling the energy in the room of all the people who are so happy to be there. Music artists literally thrive on that energy. It's what keeps them going.
So consuming the art that is a puzzle, and also the art that makes up the puzzle image, It's just part of the natural give and take of this world. It's just as important as the time we spend being creative ourselves.

Great video, well said. I had similar feelings when I did jigsaw puzzles in my late teens, then recently doing gunpla model kits. I would feel guilt as well. I wasn't changing the world, or being "productive" when I assembled the model kit. And when done, it would sit on a shelf, staring back at me. A reminder of the time I put into it, more than anything. I like putting together ikea furniture too.

I don't see doing puzzles as a mindless thing, so probably that's why I don't feel guilty about it. When I do puzzles, it's like I'm using a different part of my brain. I like the challenge and the satisfaction that comes from the process. Sometimes people try to make me feel guilty about doing puzzles but that can happen with any hobby. If it brings you joy, it is time well spent.
