This is a great puzzle, and appreciate you sharing. This is the first "puzzle" I've seen that I think I'll get, one for myself and one for my father. My father has Parkinsons and he and I spent some good time over last Christmas playing with some metal puzzles my wife and kids had gotten me because they noticed me watching your channel - playing with the puzzles helps with his motor skills and is a good mental exercise for him, so this one will be exceptionally perfect. This video was nostalgic for me. My grandmother had a mini version of one of these on her desk at work and anytime I was off from school I spent the day with her working on finding different solutions. I worked on it from age 8 to 13 (just a few days a year), kept a little notebook recording my progress, and found only about 50 solutions. Wish I had a smartphone in 1990 to make the process easier. Lol. Congrats on 4m subs, Chris.
It is supposed to be called "Ostomachion", meaning bone-fight, as in a game that used to be played with bones, instead of "Stomachion" which means stomach and is a bad translation that has been accepted as the closest one that modern day people, not willing enough to research, can relate to.
I love Chris' technique of approaching puzzles like this using just his intuition and trial/error. I tend to overthink every piece on puzzles like this and before I know it, half an hour is gone with no attempts pieces even in the puzzle.
I like the assembled shapes, its really elegant. You have two big triangles with the cut in the square diagonal and you also have two rectangles with the cut in the square middle.
Chris, It would be fun if you challenged each of your friends to solve the Stomachion Puzzle and document the different solutions found. Also, can I suggest that when you fail to solve a puzzle, that instead of opening up the directions, you keep it as an unsolved puzzle and trade your unsolved puzzles with your other puzzle friends for their unsolved puzzles. There's some really good lock picking videos where they do this.
