I met Kelly Hu while stationed in Iraq during the war in 2005-2006. She was there on a goodwill tour with other celebrities to help uplift the spirits of American soldiers. I was the Squadron Surgeon (physician in charge) for 4-14 Cavalry Squadron. Kelly Hu walked into my Aid Station one day to my surprise. She was there unexpectedly because her travel companion had severe nausea from the helicopter ride and had to land at my outpost to receive aid. Lucky for me, Kelly Hu and I shared some small talk. She told me her older brother is a colonel in the US Army and therefore she has affection for the US Forces in Iraq. Despite her beauty and celebrity status, she was so kind and down to earth. Meeting Kelly Hu was one of the happiest moments (and there were very few to choose from) in my 1.5 years in Iraq. Thank you, Kelly Hu, if you're reading this!!
Kamaka, please get actor Jason Scott Lee (Palisades/Pearl City High School’s finest) and/or Rachel Kondo (Pukalani, Maui) who was the co-executive producer and writer of the FX series Shōgun (currently on Hulu). It would be wonderful to hear how Jason as a local-born actor made it in Hollywood but then returned to his ʻāina roots and how Rachel succeeded “behind the scenes”in her talent as a writer, a genre in which we don’t really hear about locals thriving. ❤
Mahalo for this interview! Kelly Hu is so down to earth, charismatic, and joyful in spirit. It feels so rare to find a star who’s so authentic and thoughtful. Mahalo piha Kamaka for getting this interview! Great job to you both.
Now you can love, now you can lose, now you can choose, that's the measure of a person. I served in the Army with Glenn Hu and always wondered what Kelly is like. Thank you for this podcast.
Love hearing from Kelly Hu, great conversation. Love her honesty about her career and life. Also…love the new design of the “Keep it Aloha” shirt design 🤙🏽
🌺 Aloha Kelly, I really enjoyed all your movies. You are such a beautiful person. 🥰 Keep up the great work that you do. Mahalo for representing Hawai’i nei. 🤙🏽 🥰
She handled that with so much grace and kindness. Kamaka is usually akamai and self-aware, but I can’t imagine him, or anyone, asking that of a male guest.

Love Kelly! (Just found your podcast & love it, too! Husband’s family is from Honolulu and we live in NorCal).
We have triplet boys who are almost 9 and we’ve watched Finding Ohana soooo many times 😁 they get tired of it but my husband and I don’t 🤣
Mahalo ❤️

1:17:47 = that small town feel, sounds like the fictional rural/country town of "Mayberry" on the "Andy Griffith Show."
Wow..didn’t know her pidgin is still so tic! Love that she didn’t lose the local culture!
iEnjoy these interviews. Note: public school also had Hawaiian history class, Hawaiian language, and Hawaiian club back in the 80s too.
Still gorgeous.
If you want another actor on your podcast get Jacob Batalon he grew up in Honolulu he was in Spider-Man with Zendaya and Tom Holland
The talk about the difference between Hawaii born and Hawaiians born on the continent is real talk.
Great 😊👍🏻👍🏻
Don’t forget Surf Ninjas! 🤙
Shak-Mahalo

Aloha is gone
“At what age did you realize you wanted to be alone?” 👀 oof 😅
