    The best and most thorough explanation of Fuji's film simulations I've seen. It's given me a whole new appreciation of how I might use them. Many thanks.

    At first I haven't got any idea on why no one asked questions.
    But then I realised the info was deep and detailed enough to just go shoot using this new knowledge.
    Thanks for that, you've got another subscriber looking forward to your new videos

    Using monochrome/acros simulation to practice composition is surprisingly enlightening! I'm just a hobbyist and I really enjoy the process of pre-processing, I have Fuji's entry level camera (X-T100) so I can't save custom presets but I still find myself thinking of which film simulation I'd like to use before taking a shot. Fine+RAW notably does wonders for me, so I can change the simulation later in case I used the wrong one from a previous session.
    Coupled with a fully manual lens, it's practically the idealized film shooting experience with all the fun retained and without the (especially nowadays) expensive expenditures + somewhat bothersome development.

    Thanks so much, John. I think I understand it better now and finally it is starting to crystalize in my head. Currently I am drowning in tens (or hundreds?) of film simulation recipes that I like and want to try out, but having this basic knowledge about the Fuji film simulations makes it much easier.
    One question/request though: you mentioned several times the word "story" and the selection of the most suitable film sim to tell best the story we want to tell. Would you talk about this a little more? Not only about the warmer / colder tones but your personal approach when selecting a film simulation when approaching a project or story. Thanks in advance.

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's really just all about how I want the story to feel. Vibrant, bold, & cheery, then I might go with Velvia or Astia. Dramatic, moody, somber, then I might go with Classic Chrome. Dramatic, moody, but warmer, then maybe Classic Neg. And so on. Visual style is a big part of every visual story, and the film simulations can help you match that. In addition to the actual story itself, I ask myself what I want the style to say to the viewers and pick an appropriate simulation.

      @@PeltierPhoto Thanks, John. I will have to explore more on this topic for sure. I'm in the process though :) My problem is often that I cannot choose. I create 2 or 3 "looks" with various recipes and they all look good to me, I like them all. They feel like totally different photos (which is probably THE purpose of the recipes), but I can't decide which one to go with/ which one to select finally for an album, for instance.
      But anyway, your videos help a lot and I am thankful for your input and knowledge sharing.

    Very good and thorough video on the subject of film simulations! I always try to get the best picture in camera. I do like photography more than post processing :) One thing I noticed though. When adjusting the pre-processing in camera, I have to be mindful that the exposure change I apply is also effecting the histogram. Those are based on the jpeg as in any camera, and not on the raw.
    So when I would go to a setting of highlights -2, the histogram is showing less highlights on the right of the histogram. But the Raw will record based on the exposure, and not based on the histogram. So the raw for highlights +4 or -2 will be the same when you do not change exposure. And when having highlights +4 you could be wanting to darken exposure for example. And in other scenarios brighten it. You can also see this in the film recipes online where they encourage to do a +1 on exposure compensation.
    Maybe it is not a big problem due to the dynamic range nowadays, but I wanted to mention it to be mindful.
    Furthermore I would encourage to be mindful about colour exposure as I call it. When relying on blinkies or an average histogram (not rgb split), you could miss individual colours to be over exposed. Reds can be blown out when the average histogram is within limits for example. And blowing out a single colour can also be missed by the blinkies, cause those are also based on "averages" or the sum of colours if you want to call it that. So using black and white jpeg or using exposing to the right can create blown out colours. Which can be noticed by seeing very harsh colours and sudden stop of colour gradation in the picture.
    Maybe this is the reason Canon cameras do not provide blinkies, but do provide a rgb split histogram.
    I've not come across this information online, so if I'm missing something or someone thinks this is not correct information, please kindly respond. I'm eager to learn on the subject. So also a disclaimer for the info above, it could be incorrect ;)

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that is correct, the histogram display is based on the film simulation and all other image quality settings for the JPG; the RAW histogram will be different.
      Fujifilm cameras do have an RGB histogram you can pull up in Shooting mode by assigning a custom function control to it and I find this quite useful at times.

    Can the X-T5 do Film Simulation in custom presets now?

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The X-T5 has always been able to include Film Simulations in the custom presets, just like all other models. Or am I misunderstanding the question?

    • @proartwork7189
      @proartwork7189 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PeltierPhoto That I know, but can you do your (personal recipes) film simulation bracketing. For what I understood, you could not do that with the X-T3, only with the standard film simulations, not one your personally create.

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh ok you’re referring to Film Simulation Bracket. No, you can only bracket film simulations with your current camera settings, you can’t bracket custom recipes.

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Light color temperatures will affect them, similar to film, but maybe without some of the fine nuances that happen in the chemical reactions of film.

  • @macallanvintage
    @macallanvintage ปีที่แล้ว

    Over-hyped.
    A Porsche or a Nissan, are still cars.
    All these “film simulations” are merely filters…albeit filters that have undergone highly time consuming development time, and are user-adjustable.
    If these filters did not exist in the Fujifilm world, what are the unique features to brag about Fujifilm APSC bodies?

    • @PeltierPhoto
      @PeltierPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If all you want is a camera, buy a camera. If you want a creative tool with features and a design that help you create better photos, then buy the camera that helps you do that.
