I can not thank you enough for this video❤ Everyone talks about the fuji recipes but no one has explained the topic so easily for beginners. Thousand thanks 😊
You must be the most knowledgeable person who's done videos on Fuji cameras. My X-S10 is my first digital after a year with a minolta SRT, and your Fuji videos have taught me more than the hours of "setup" and "menu" videos I've seen so far. Thanks for making these!
Honestly, there's so much content to consider in all media, we're all missing a great deal. Thanks for your kind words, always nice to read that my content is appreciated!!
Hi Maarten. Just found you today since I just received my first Fujifilm camera! Appreciate the effort and quality of your videos - You teach so well!! Excited to get better on my photography journey with all your recent videos! Take care.
Just what I needed to pass this beautiful Sunday. I was doing this on my X-T4 from one of those helpful websites but you clear a few of my doubts. Thanks 👍
Thank you Maarten! As always, your videos are both entertaining and extremely helpful for a beginner such as me. You're helping me unlock the potential of my Fujifilm X-T200 one video at a time. Best photography channel on TH-cam in my opinion - keep up the excellent work!!
The thing I love about Fujifilm cameras is that, even on auto mode, you get beautiful photos only limited by your own compositional skill. I like my little XE3 and the 18-55mm when I need a small camera. No need for RAW, just jpg and Velvia and every shot is perfectly exposed. I have Sony and Canon full frame but keep going back to the XE3 and XT3.
Tnx Maarten I bought a X100V a couple of weeks ago. I could't find out how this works with the recipes. I'll try again with your instruction. Maybe I'll contact you if I have more questions about this rather complicated camera...
I'm a hobbyist photographer and I've had an X100V for a year now, though it got little use until recently because of the pandemic. I found the "recipes" a bit overwhelming because there are so many choices and parameters which can be adjusted in various ways, so my quick advice is: use a lot of them in different ways to see what you like and don't like. I'll just say in my own case, I spent a lot of time using the "Classic" film sims -- Classic Chrome and Classic Negative, that is -- mostly because they are so popular on photography blogs and on TH-cam. But I personally didn't care for them much because they desaturate things so much. Everything looked dull to me; others will find them perfect for certain scenes. It took me a while to discover that the film simulation I most prefer is "Astia"; that one seems closest to the basic color I got out of my Canon cameras in the past, which I always liked very much. The truth is, it's a matter of taste, and given the wide range of possibilities with this camera, the only way you will ever know what you like is if you experiment a LOT. I would recommended researching the "film simulation bracketing" function which allows you to see how one image is processed three different ways. That's probably an excellent method to get a handle on the capabilities of the camera a bit more quickly.
As a beginner photographer who bought the X-E4 this summer as a first non-mobile camera, these videos are invaluable! Thanks a lot Maarten! (Interesting spelling, I'm used to either Morten or Mårten)
Again a very profound and informative video! Thank you so much 🙏 Maybe just one request: while going through the settings, slowing down the changes shown would help for more visual clarity! Maybe it's just me but right now the "pause" button is my friend 😌
I'm glad you've found the pause button, which, along with the ability to play at slower speeds is the best way to get things slowed down to the speed you need. Thanks, I do appreciate your kind words.
Hi Maarten. Thanks for the great video on recipes. I've looked through your video library but I didn't see a review of the Fujifilm X100V. Do you have any plans for a review, although it's on the market for a while now.
When making a recipe and saving it to a custom setting.. does it replace the original film effect its built on ? If no… how to return to the main effect the manufacturer designed for each of the films in the camera . Thank you so much
Not in the way they're usually presented, primarily as other brands don't use the film simulation model that Fujifilm does. However, they all have a variety of settings to modify their colour profiles.
@@MaartenHeilbron Interesting! Thank you. I do have a custom B&W setting in my cannon. I'm going to attempt to take these fuji film sims and make them into Lightroom profiles.
I love your Instruction videos. But it really would be helpful if you could list the steps and give us the time to write them down. Even set them on our camera which would make it so much easier to follow you then trying to watch the video make adjustments to your camera and write the recipe down at the same time. Thank you
I appreciate your kind words. Here's the thing. If I were to do the steps in real time, my videos would be slow and tedious. My hope is, that you get the general idea and can repeat it, with the settings that make sense to you, later. However, it's also possible to adjust the playback speed of TH-cam videos and to stop and start as required. As for writing the steps down, I did, for a time, post a text equivalent on my blog site. However, in addition to the fact that it felt like work (producing videos doesn't) there were so few visitors there that I lost interest in doing that.
Hi Earl, one suggestion, use the keyboard shortcut to pause the video, for me that's the space bar. Press that to freeze Earl so you can write down or input the suggested 'ingredient', then press spacebar again to continue. Want to scroll back or forward? The J key scrolls back, the L key fast forwards (and the K key between them also will freeze Earl). At least that is the way it works for me on TH-cam using the Chrome browser. Happy viewing!
Do the custom settings override the default simulations? I added some recipes but now I see that can’t go back to the regular film simulations that my camera came with unless I reset the custom banks. Is this correct?
I’m still having a hard time figuring something out. When saving a custom film sim it shows up twice in the Q menu, one shows the BASE and one doesn’t. What is the difference between the two?
BASE is just the current unmodified setting. The C selections are not really designed to select a film sim. Create your recipe and save it as a Custom setting and use it to select them.
Unfortunately, when I shoot raw plus jpg with a black and white custom recipe (or a colour custom recipe) and I place the sd card into my MacBook, I see that the raw file is completely “destroyed”. For instance, it reflects the colour and white balance that was intended for black and white and there is no way to recover it using capture one. What can I do then?
It seems as if your software is using the settings (which are saved in the RAW file) - or it's displaying the "preview' in the RAW file instead of the actual RAW image. There should be a way to reset those settings to the actual RAW capture. Sorry, I have no experience with Capture One. I don't have this issue with Lightroom.

It's a combination. The custom setting holds the recipe. You need to save one position for regular settings.
@@MaartenHeilbron got it, thank you
@@MaartenHeilbron so if I leave C1 alone I will be able to use all 9 film simulations that come with the camera?

This why fujifilm stand out among the rest expensive flagship cameras
Well, to be honest, there are cameras that have more controls and settings than are available here.
