Well done for spotting the Dylan influence! :) Btw, they're certainly can't be described as an 'English band'! Mike Scott, the principal songwriter and driving force behind the band is Scottish, and Scott Wickham the fiddle player is Irish. Anthony Thistlewaite (playing Mandolin here) is English, as was Karl Wallinger, and other English musicians regularly pass through their ranks, but the Fisherman's Blues album was recorded in Ireland; the main influence behind it was traditional Irish music, and the majority of musicians who played on it were Irish.
Wowza I haven’t heard this in decades it’s SO amazing THIS is why we all LOVE the Irish ☘️ any culture that makes art like this??! Seriously. Yes this makes clear where American folk and country (not Country & Western) came from! Not only but primarily. Think Appalachia. Whichever CD they put this out on, I had it at the time and the whole thing was great. This particular song is a masterpiece for all time. 1000 years from now it will still be gorgeous ✊🏽
the Irish ? 😳… the lead singer and main songwriter and the only member to have been involved in all the years the Waterboys have existed is Mike Scott and he’s Scottish tbh ! There HAVE been Irish members , but there’s also been English , American and European members too - 85 and counting 😉 So I understand why you thought they were an Irish band but in reality Scotland claims them . ✊ 👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Ok, if they’re considered a Scottish band that’s fine by me 😉 I only know them from the one cd I had of theirs in the 80s? 90s? which I LOVED! with this track on it. So how many people from different nations were on every track?😁 The STYLE/GENRE is Irish yes? Or is it both Scot/Irish? But is there truly much difference or is this just about rivalry and pride? Regardless of hairsplitting, I do love the Irish culture and people, I’ve known far fewer Scottish (besides my grandmother)😆 oh -I met Alan Cumming🤣 Honestly I don’t give a rat’s arse about tribalism, geographic borders are 100% arbitrary in time: go back far enough and we’re all African -that’s more than good enough for me❤️

What a lovely surprise to wake up to C n C , genuinely thank you 🙏.. I’d describe them ( I say them , it’s really a vehicle for lead singer Mike Scott who is the main songwriter ) as a rock band with Celtic and folk themes . I was originally drawn in by the fiddle work .. I can’t explain it but being of the Celtic persuasion myself it’s deep in my soul , my DNA if you will and speaks to me of ancient minstrels , dark nights and story tellers holding their audience in their thrall by firelight telling of deeds and long dead heroes . Yeah that’s a bit of a poncey description from me but it needed saying . Simply Superb ! Congratulations to the other 6 who also asked for this tremendous track , we will always have this in common if nothing else ✊ 👍🏴

The Greenpeace Warrior was docked in Dublin around 1986 and The Waterboys did a free gig on the deck for people on the docks to help fund Greenpeace. I was lucky enough to catch them and even luckier to see them bring up a young relatively unknown Sinead O'Conner to accompany them on a few songs.
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_BletheringThe Waterboys have had members from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, America, amongst other places, they have a Liverpool connection with Ian mcnabb and Ringo Starr's son touring in the band a few years back, Mike Scott the singer/songwriter has written some fantastic songs over the years, this being amongst his best work, I also love his W.B Yeats Album from a few years back, Rock on Scotty!!

This is so good - the whole album transports me to a simpler happier time. The two albums before this are better for me. Less folky and darker, more evocative and mysterious ❤ Saw them live in the late 80s
This definitely is one of my favorites. I have listened to the whole cd many times and played some good air fiddle. Other songs on it are A Bang On The Ear and We Will Not Be Lovers. My favorite is The Stolen Child. Very fae.
The were part of the scottish 80s thing. Bands like simple minds, deacon blue, wolf tones, the waterboys, deli mitri. Was a kinda traditional folk rock mix.
Great band.....everyone knows them by this song and it is a great tune but you really should listen to any song off of their " Dream Harder " album. It is in my humble opinion their greatest offering by a country mile. Mike Scott takes his guitar playing to a different level . Check out " The return of Pan" or " Preparing to fly" . Its a spiritual experience!!!!!. They transform into a genuine rock band.
sorry, but they are an Irish band from the eighties whom I grew up listening to and whom I have seen in concert a number of times. The British love to claim them as their own.
As a Scot this speaks to me on a level that isnt entirely explainable in words. Its in the blood or something. Cheers! Also, have you guys upgraded your setup?, the sound is pretty awesome !
We're using the OBS Studio presets. Gates, expanders, compressors, you know. We looked up on TH-cam how to get the best vocal mic sound for OBS Studios. We're still tweaking it here and there.
Not my favourite track or album but worthy of hearing again. If you delve into their back catalogue, check out The Big Music and Whole of the moon. Definitely a richer sound with Wallinger
I never entirely trust a band that undergoes a Damascene conversion (U2 discovering the blues, anyone?) or suddenly changes musical direction, so The Waterboys was one of those bands I should have loved, but never quite connected with. They went from more of an indie rock band to discovering creels, reels and Fair Isle sweaters, which didn't feel sincere to me. So, it sounds great, all the right bits and pieces are in place, but emotionally it does nothing for me at all.
@@dcg4mn You're right. All I remember is reading an interview with Mike Scott from around that time and something about it didn't sit quite right with me, but I can't say specifically what it was, just that it coloured my perception of him and his music.
