My last year at law school was intense and, to be honest, alcohol was what got me through, emotionally speaking. Every time I hear this song I recall it blasting out of my girlfriend's stereo back then and her singing it to me after a night at the pub - into a ruler as if it were a microphone, no less - naked but for knee high boots. Those were the days.
We saw the Waterboys earlier this year without electric fiddle etc at the Glasgow Concert Hall and it was great. However, as my son who worked on the fishing boats on Oban before working in the North Sea Oil Riggs said only a fisherman knows the truth of this song I am inclined to take his word as gospel. God bless you brave guys Angela XX
Your giving me a dilemma here Angela. I know that Steve Wickham's fiddle playing helps to make many Waterboys songs great, but I also remember seeing them in Aberdeen in 1990 (Room to Roam tour) and, if memory serves me right, I think they played that gig with only four onstage. Was still a great gig. Saw them a few years back as well and, for me, the standout was We Will Not Be Lovers. Strangely, Fisherman's Blues was performed with Mike Scott on the piano, and the bassist stepped up to do the wee twirl with Steve, which didn't feel right. Now I need to ponder whether my legs would hold up for a few hours standing come June.
If you haven't seen it then I recommend searching for the version of Mad as the Mist and Snow on Jools Holland. A lesser known Waterboys song, but wow it builds and you can tell they're winging it towards the end!
I'm more concerned about the 'hurtling fevered train heading headlong into the heartland like a cannon in the rain'. Shouldn't it be cannonball? A minor quibble though, still a great song, and it's hardly the first time cannon or cannonball has sounded weird when mentioned in a song (thinking Oasis, Damien Rice)
What makes you think it won't be the other way round? Eire is almost secular. Moslems come to escape ideology. It's the second generation who regress unless they're smart. 😂
Amazing band, album, tune, and performance 😊❤️🎶🌈Mike
Scott’s jacket is beautiful
OMG still sounds as great as it did the day I heard it in 1986! Welcome 2025!
God I love the Waterboys 😍🎶✨

It doesn't get better than that.

very very good song , i love Mike Scott a good guy
So he's been singing about wanting to be a fisherman for the last 40 years...he can't want to be a fisherman that bad then after all
Think rock star pays better than fisherman...

In about 10 years, this wonderful music will be replaced by the Muslims' call to prayer.

No it won't
God you're fair sad😂
Never,its a classic irish song
@@paulymullo I would agree it's a classic song, not sure that it's necessary to try to classify it as Irish, given that Mike Scott is Scottish
