      @Jane Ryan-Douglas During English rule in Ireland there were Penal Laws where the Irish people were not allowed to speak their native language. They were not allowed to go to school or play Irish games or to practise their religion under pain of imprisonment or even death. So it really is amazing that it didn't die out altogether.

    I love the Irish language. I fell in love in my early teens when I discovered Clannad's music and some of my favorite poets are Irish. I taught myself a bit of the language and tried writing poetry in it myself. I even got the first Harry Potter book in Irish.

    Such a fun video, you did a great job with the translation.
    Fun fact, leprechauns are considered fairies in Ireland. We have countless types of fairies, some are small, some are almost human sized and they always want to screw you over. Better to stay on their good side, by sharing some of your whiskey with them for example. ;)

    I just made s loaf, and it was super easy. I’m so excited about how it looks, and it’s cooling, so I haven’t tasted it yet.
    The cross didn’t come out so well for me, but it still looks AMAZING. If I hadn’t made it myself, I wouldn’t believe it wasn’t made in a bakery by a master baker.

    Gemma, are the raisins and caraway seeds that we typically see in this bread in this country not traditional? Thanks for sharing the recipe in your native language!

    • @unakeane532

      Irish soda bread never ever has raisins or caraway seeds. This is traditional recipe. My mate was in New York and horrified at the so called traditional receipes. We love new stuff but please know when a recipe is not authentic.

    That’s almost the same recipe I found online a few yrs ago & made. My claims that it’s not the real traditional Irish soda bread as buttermilk was hard to come by. This, from the guy who named his son’s Dubhlain Aiden & Liam Argyle!!! And yes, I’ve always known the Irish had their own language, which I would love to learn.

    This is so lovely! I don't know much about Irish language but it sounded so nice and I applaud you for making this recipe with it. I gotta say this was the most interesting and beautiful Irish soda bread recipe on TH-cam. Love the cultural lesson on blessings and fairies. I noticed you put your primary measurement in inches and Fahrenheit. Do you guys use these measurements in Ireland as opposed to metric? Thanks for your recipe!

    • @biggerbolderbaking
      @biggerbolderbaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. My recipes include measurements in English and metric as we're catering to a worldwide audience. But for my videos, I usually use English measurements.

    Hi gemma (my inspiration)! I wanted to ask a question!
    When i made this bread is was hard and too salty. I think we need to lower the amount of salt you add in there. But why was it soo hard?

    • @biggerbolderbaking
      @biggerbolderbaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can reduce the salt or add a bit of sugar and some raisins. It should have a crusty surface and compact inside.

    So many questions nothing about baking though lol. I just learned that Ireland has its own language! why? Since you have your own language why do you speak English mainly? Does Scotland have its language?

    • @biggerbolderbaking
      @biggerbolderbaking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, boy. This is a history lesson right here.
      This is Ireland's first and original language. It is in the family of Gaelic languages like Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, etc. Now, the English language in Ireland - that is a long story! But to make it short - it went along with the taking over of Ireland by the British, which goes back to the 10th century.

    Hi Gemma greetings from Ireland I make White soda, (not brown) twice a week all year, your soda looks great I think we Irish are the ones that can make proper soda bread, seen other people who are not Irish try this, and they really try but never seem to get it right, brushing melted butter over it when baked, well they say God loves a tryer.,.

    I forgot to add in the butter but it still came out wonderful. I recommend this particularly because it is so quick to make and is still tasty. I do agree with the recommendation in the recipe to not add in the liquid at once. 3/4 of the amount was enough for my dough.

    I thought the Irish spoke English, intreresting to know, since my family claimed they where part Irish and never told us the Irish had their own language! I guess I watch to many English speaking movies, where everyone speaks English!😂

      Deborah Buhrman we do speak English in Ireland, Irish is not spoken on a day to day basis by most of the population, but it is taught in schools and spoken in certain parts of the country. When we were colonized by Britain unfortunately Irish was replaced by English as the main spoken language

      @@couturestar06 Thank you for informing me, I just never thought about it , but all my grand parents had accents of some kind , but my great grandmother on my mom's side , her maiden name was Flint, and her by nighty+ years still had a reddish tent, my one granddaughter has her hair an numerous cousin on her side! I'M m not sure if they new if she spoke Irish or not, I cannot remember anyone saying so. I'll have to check , but most of the older ones have past on, so the young ones may not know. I know they didn't talk about it. My other grandparents had an accent from where they were from, Polish, Lithaeanian, and Creek, you could say and it's true "Our little red head her name is Phynix (fire bird) stands out in my emediate family, she is beautiful 6 years old now, long strawberry red hair and light skin, she is throw back to great grandma Flint, we are darker complected , it's funny!

    Hi - can I make this with natural yoghurt (rather than buttermilk)? If so, how much would I use?

    • @biggerbolderbaking
      @biggerbolderbaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All Soda Bread requires an acidic liquid to activate the baking soda and to help the bread to rise up and have the correct texture. For this reason, I would not suggest trying to make soda bread without the buttermilk.
