    I was planning on getting the Braun to set up at my job because my work table is a bit dark (lighting isn’t great in my shop). I’ve never heard of the Hyper Tough, but it seemed like a better choice overall. My biggest problem with it........it’s from Walmart. Not sure if I can swallow my pride enough to buy it. I’ll definitely think about it though.

    Walmart for the win. Harbor Freight stuff, though it does work it always leaves something to be desired. I think you need to leave you other light there as well to spread room light. LEDs are great but are too directional(especially on lower height ceilings) and all the walls and surrounding area are dark.

    • @GanderFlight
      @GanderFlight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was surprised after all the chatter I heard about how great the HF light was, but I definitely prefer the Walmart one. When the rest of the garage lights are on in addition to this one there is adequate light to work. I’ll invest more into lights when we’re in a more long term location.

    The HF had a lot of spill off of the sides, the Walmart light had side shields that directed the light downward. I'd hang the 2 together and turn one off and the other on to see which is better. I think I'd probably go with the Walmart light for a small space if I was choosing between the 2. Good choice on going with the Walmart light.

  • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire

    The biggest failure point on LED lights is heat and mounting the light so that it is suspended instead of flush would help with that. The HF light has a nicer looking housing though since it is a brushed aluminum vs what appears to just be painted metal on the WM light. I have a couple of the HF lights that I've used and will stop off at WM tomorrow to pick up one of their lights since I need to replace a couple of the T12 fluorescent dual-bulb fixtures in my garage / workshop anyway (because the ballasts and connectors are bad / going bad)... If I was installing the light where the look of the fixture would be noticeable and it mattered, I would go with the HF one. It just looks so much better (at least until you drop it and end up bending the aluminum)... :)

    • @GanderFlight
      @GanderFlight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll give the aesthetic award to the harbor freight one too, but seeing the bulb was the deal breaker for me.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GanderFlight -- What did you not like? The color temperature? I now have both in my garage -- 2 of the WM models mounted parallel with the vehicle parking positions and on the wall switch AND 1 of the HF models mounted perpendicular to that in the center of the garage and controlled by the pull chain (shortened to keep it from hitting the roof of any of my vehicles). I tried the WM 10-pack LED replacement bulbs, but they would not work in all of my fluorescent fixtures. For the fixtures that they would light in, they were bright and I liked them, but in most of my fixtures they either would not come on at all, just have a dim glow, or would noticeably flicker.
      If I wanted to add another pair of the WM units to my garage, it would be easy since I just changed the hard wiring for the fluorescent fixtures to ceiling joist mounted outlets and as such, I have one extra socket at each outlet where I could plug one more light in. So far, I don't see a need, but it's nice to have the option, just in case...

    I have 4 dual tube fixtures in my garage. I just need to determine if i want to swap the bulbs w LED tubes, or replace the entire fixture. And since they are wired to a common wall switch, there may be some DIY to get the HyperTough to even work.

    • @GanderFlight
      @GanderFlight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whats Going to Break Next? - DIY It definitely sounds like these are not the right fit for your application. I’d definitely look into retrofitting the existing fixtures to work with LED tubes. That common switch for the whole place is not something to easily give up!

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does your garage have open rafters or is the "attic" closed off with sheetrock? If it is open, then it is a simple matter of replacing the junction boxes that the existing fluorescent lights are using with electrical plug outlet boxes... Then you still have the switch, it's just controlling electrical outlets instead of the hard wiring...
      When your ballast to the fluorescent fixture goes, it's as expensive as buying an entire new fixture (if not even more expensive), so that is a definite time to consider switching... Also, if your garage / workshop is unheated and you get tired of waiting for the fluorescent bulbs to come to full brightness, that could be incentive to switch to LED...

    Purchased five of the Walmart lights a little over a year ago.. Three of them are still working today while two of them started flickering incessantly after a few months. I pulled them apart assuming the culprit was either poor solder connections or a faulty capacitor. I found neither, but what I did find was a power supply that runs frightfully HOT. While the LEDs themselves might be good for 50,000 hours, I can't see the power supply even coming close to that. I've also noticed that taking pictures with my phone under any of the lights (flickering or not) results in dark bands across the picture. When I looked at the output feeding the LEDs with an oscilloscope I noticed a large amount of 120hz ac ripple. While the human eye can't necessarily detect the flickering this is causing, it's certainly enough to screw with the camera's electronic shutter. Whoever designed and manufactured these was just too cheap to adequately filter the power supply output. Buyer beware, I guess. I haven't tried the Harbor Freight lights as yet, but will be soon.
