  • The 2014 Cadillac ELR was the marque’s most futuristic production automobile when it debuted, but after more than 56,000 miles and eight years how has the one featured in this review aged?

In California the drive battery is an emissions part so it has a 15 year 150,000 mile warranty. They replaced the battery in my wife's Volt at 131k miles no cost. My original Volt battery has 192k, still works fine.

Too bad the aftermarket CUE head unit replacement is failing. I was one of many who had the CUE touchscreen fail and bought an aftermarket touchscreen. This is a $80-140 item, but requires some moderate skill to disassemble the dash and then the head unit and replace the screen. I can say that a ~2 hour job took me about 8 hours, since the wires to the head unit were misrouted and I had enormous problems getting the unit out far enough to disengage the wire harnesses. Rerouting the wires took a bit, then I reassembled and found it was not operable, and it took me a while to figure out I had dislodged a ribbon cable. The aftermarket unit is a far better touchscreen, and I recommend highly that you make that small investment to re-enable your old CUE unit. Another separate issue you did not mention is many owners are having major problems getting parts for the ELR: the control module for the LED headlights appears to be unavailable, and I fear a minor accident could be a total as a result. By the way, I am an original owner of a 2016, with about 31,000 miles on it. The CUE screen was the only problem I had until last year, when the main propulsion battery gave me charge errors (I had the recall done as soon as it was announced, so not that problem), and they replaced the battery. My understanding is that a new battery can run $11,000 or more if it is out of warranty

Thanks for sharing your experiences and observations. I'm glad you were able to get GM to spring for a new battery - and I agree, parts unique to the ELR are going to be a real challenge. I did consider doing my own CUE repair during the 1st go around but paused for exactly the ribbon issue you referenced. And yes, Cadillac made the touchscreen replacement harder than it needs to be. I probably spent 8 hours doing the install/reassembly of the unit that's now failing. A similar stereo swap in my last car, a VW Eos, took me about an hour.

Yep, sometimes it's best to wait on some recalls.

Nice review, it helped me decide to get one and I do like it. While the replacement touchscreen was working, did it allow battery charger settings (going from the default 8amp to 12amp charging) and battery use info?
The bottom of my original cue is losing function so if I can upgrade to a large screen with Android auto built in that would be awesome. I only see the 10 inch for ATS that would fit well but wasn't sure if this would work because of the hybrid battery settings screen that likely is missing for the ATS. I would love a review and demo of the new touchscreen video from you as well (while it is working). Thanks!

Hi Kyle, Yes, the CUE functions, including switching to 12amp did work with the aftermarket unit, BUT the CUE functions were off center and touch didn't line up with the CUE buttons. I compensated by learning the touch the areas of the screen that operated the CUE controls. As cool as the aftermarket unit appears, I can't recommend it for the following reasons: 1.) It failed after about 2 years of use. 2.) When it was working the screen was always dimmer at its brightest setting than CUE. 3.) Before failing altogether it developed a small black bar that blocked part of the screen. Maybe I just got a bad one but I've never seen an ELR owner report that they were able to get CUE to display aligned properly and I did try every display setting combination, including those for other GM vehicles. Although, as you mentioned, CUE did line up correctly for 1 or more ATS owners. Unfortunately, I had not started my channel yet when I had the Android unit, so I can't do a video review of it. If you are determined to get an Android unit, I did see a while back that someone was now selling one with with a CPU fan (I think I saw it on eBay?). I would definitely hold out for one with a fan since my guess heat was the prime contributor to my unit's failure over time.

Thanks for the insight. I think I'll hold off for now as the cue is still mostly functional and might risk it later if my touchscreen fails completely. I appreciate the feedback

I don't see the exact radio I purchased for sale anymore but I got it on Alibaba. Here's a link to a search page with results. Please keep in mind I can not recommend the original radio I purchased due to it malfunctioning in a relatively short amount of time. As best as I can tell there are a bunch of different resellers of these Android-based units. www.alibaba.com/trade/search?fsb=y&IndexArea=product_en&CatId=&SearchText=cadillac+ATS+radio

I have a 2014 ELR with 110k miles. I get between 35-42 miles per charge. Right now it's in the shop and getting 1 sensor replaced because it went into propulsion mode. Costing me over $1700 just to replace because they had to remove the battery system to access it. Other then that it's been good since I bought it used.
Where did you get that aftermarket radio?

Looks like you've got an aftermarket sunroof on yours. Does it retract into the roof?

Hi Elliot, No it manually tilts up, or I can remove the glass panel and put it in the trunk. I looked at getting a power roof but I didn't want to sacrifice any headroom or the factory headliner.
