Great suggestions. My late husband and I never lived above our means (we were frugal). We tithed and gave offerings. We felt blessed and grateful. We did not covet other people’s possessions. We paid off our house and saved for our children’s education and retirement.

I am newly retired. One of my goals this year is to get more active since the job I had for the last 37 years involved a lot of sitting and being on the computer. I looked at the cost of joining a gym nearby and it was $29 a month. I also looked at the YMCA and it was $40 a month. Yikes! One of our neighbors mentioned to me that the local senior center has a gym so my husband and I went and checked it out. The cost is only $28 A YEAR! It is beautiful has lots of machines and a wall full of windows that looks out into a beautiful park. It’s also air conditioned and they play good music. We have been several times over the last five weeks and it has just been fantastic. Today we discovered that they have many classes such as Zumba, Pilates, and ceramics and billiards just to name a few. By shopping around we found a great deal.

For our wedding, I made almost all of the decorations myself. I bought vases at a thrift store and used them to make beautiful table scapes.I made flowers from coffee filters that I dyed for our color scheme. I borrowed and decorated an arch to stand under for our vows. Since I come from a large family and have some great friends we just had a potluck dinner after the wedding. We only bought the main dish and a lot of people brought a side dish. We had plenty of food at a lower cost. Everything worked out great. Someone told me that we had the wedding of the year.❤

Back in 1985 my daughter got married. I am a single mom so we had a wedding on a shoestring. For everything (except the ring) it cost $3000. We used the local park service for the venue and it was free and the catered food was discounted since I worked in a hotel! I think the kind of wedding you had will be more memorable for you. It was done from the heart! 🥰

Giftgiving: When I was a kid one of my aunts at Christmas gave her elderly mother, my grandma, a box of groceries which included a can of coffee, evaporated milk, sugar, flour, etc. My grandma, who was on a fixed income, loved her daily coffee and still liked to bake. Even as a kid of 10 or 12, I thought that was a smart, practical, useful gift. Grandma didn't need any more geegaws and tchotchkes that she would need to dust. I don't remember her reaction but Grandma was a sensible, practical woman of the Great Depression so I bet she loved the gift.

This doesn’t really one up with your content this time … but I had to tell you!
We didn’t seem to be able to avoid the fast food places. No matter how hard we tried (or so we told ourselves!) we were in those joints 5 or 6 times every month.
Last month - only once! Why? Because every night, I got my adult son (there’s only the two of us in the house) to help me decide what to make for supper “tomorrow,” and then he would get the all the necessary stuff out of the freezer and put it into the fridge for me.
It’s not exactly “meal planning” in the usual sense of the word, but did it ever help me out!
    It’s not perfect but it’s a start.

Mother’s Day and my daughter’s birthday fall within days of each other. I will buy from local supermarket a bunch of roses, 18 count, and a bunch of baby’s breath for very little. The supermarkets have the plastic cone sleeves so I grab an extra one, extra ribbon, wrapping paper, card, card pick and package of food. when I get home, I split the roses, greenery, and baby’s breath and reassemble into two bunches. We have a local theatre that puts on a 2 hour symphony for free and I take both, including the rest of the family and afterwards, we come back to my place for tea, homemade cake and I give them each a bouquet of roses. ❤

Hi Emmy and Paul. Love your channel. My husband and I have always lived a frugal lifestyle. We are very blessed . The cost of living has increased and unaffordable for many. To cut costs, we have made some adjustments. During covid, when everything was shut down, I learned via you tube and practice how to cut my own hair. I admit I do a great job. I now cut my husband, son's and grandson's hair. As for groceries,we enjoy premium coffee and premium cuts of meat. We will only buy on them on sale and enjoy them infrequently. We vacation locally, at a lovely self catering cottage, rather than taking all inclusive trips abroad. Simple picnics at local parks with friends and family are enjoyable. Simple easy living is peaceful and fulfilling.

When I hear about American Health Care, I am soooo relieved to live in Ontario Canada. We pay provincial tax on purchases but we don't have a huge payout each month. OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) covers everything - doctor visits, xrays, blood tests etc. - MRI - everything! My husband and I are 'seniors' and we are so very grateful for this system. I can't imagine having to worry about health care (even though by age, Medicare USA would cover us) - I don't want to worry about deductibles or dealing with paper work etc. Our drug care here is also wonderful. Thanks for your always so helpful videos!...and all the best.

One way I can afford Christmas is that I set a certain amount aside each month for haircuts, eating out, and some small things that may pop up during the month. At the end of the month, I put whatever money is left in an envelope to use for Christmas gifts. I also set a limit as to how much I spend on each recipient. So far, I have enough to purchase four gifts!

I use to do this when my children where still home. Each month starting in January I would either buy (in the discounted section) or make a Christmas present or birthday present. By the time Christmas rounded around l had my Christmas shopping done. I had 5 children. When they all left the nest and moved to different states l stopped. But this year l have started (started in January) doing it again since 3 of my 5 now live close to me with their families. So far l have managed to stay on track for 3 months now. Some l have bought (discounted section or Five, Below, Temu, $ Tree & etc) and some l have made. I am on Social Security so l have to budget everything. My refrigerator, 2 freezers and cabinets are full. I take the left overs from our Family Sunday dinners and make up missionaries meals for the missionaries in my Ward once a month.

I'm a single retiree living on my own. In order to save costs on food I don't eat out unless either it's with a friend for a social get-together or I'm away from home on an errand or appointment. Since I rely on public transit it's not always convenient to get home on time. I use a small air fryer to cook my meat and potatoes and eat my veggies either cold or cooked on the stovetop. Use of an air fryer or a crockpot would greatly reduce the cost of electricity.

The ham and potato patties sound delicious! Must try those with some of the ham we froze!
To afford the unaffordable our general principles are to take care of and maintain what we have, make substitutions, always be comparing prices (like the shopping around for insurance, etc.), seek the minimum level of what is needed - i.e. cut back until it's too uncomfortable then bump up just a little - examples: how much detergent, shampoo is needed to do the job, how warm in the summer or cool in the winter can you stand being inside, and of course the good old frugal principle of, "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without". Best wishes to all as we try to navigate the ever-increasing costs of everything. It is possible to "beat the system" and still live abundantly and joyfully on less.

We had carrots as a side dish and I cut up a lot of them so I could just add them to the soup. It worked really well. I’m definitely going to make your recipe. We like to go out to eat once a week, usually Friday night but we have an adult kid who is going to need a lot of money soon and I’m very worried about him not being able to pay. The biggest thing that we have changed is really evaluating our purchasing habits…. Is it a WANT or a NEED 🤔🤔🤔. This one question has absolutely decreased the amount of money we spend.
Another question we ask ourselves is: Is it on sale or full price?
Finally, is it more cost effective to replace or repair the item? If the parts are expensive, if there are supply chain issues, or the repair man rate is too high, maybe a replacement item is a better choice for us. We’re elderly and many diy projects are out of our wheelhouse now.

We used to be able to get things from the dump. I would get electric appliances, usual not more than the power cord was bad, but if i couldn't fix it , i could just return it and if there were parts i might be able to use else where. I had all kinds of appliances that I couldn't afford.
Another was baby furniture that I could repair and when my children out grew them i donated them to the church nursery.
At one time I had to be on food stamps. I used them to buy meats that were on sale. My 3 children never went hungry but never had potatoes chips or candy or junk foods.

Loved this one, guys! Here’s a related tip for the appliance purchasers out there: in our area, there’s only ONE appliance repair company. If you don’t purchase your appliance directly from them, they won’t service it and you’re out of luck! So check around to see if any repair companies have agreements with sellers to get coverage and extend the life of the appliance.

In the community that I live in Canada we lucky to have two local museums that offer entry by donation, we have wonderful local library and they offer os many things for us to do at little to no cost, I have many beautiful parks to explore and enjoy, I buy things at the end of a season or holiday and putting items away for later. I have birthday meals at home with a home made dessert, we have games night and potluck with friends, I join a walking club it was free and we meet 2 times a month at different local park and then we have snack time after where two members bring a baked homemade treat, it’s save us all for going to our local coffee shop and grabbing something, I volunteer at community garden where in the summer months up though the fall I will be able get fresh produce that help me save money as I put some of it in the freezer to use for later.

I made each family group a personalized genealogical set of bookmarks and a matching refrigerator magnet. And of course, they’ll also get one of my original Christmas cards. The families of the newest members received a genealogy-related coffee mug set. Otherwise, they receive just birthday cards, no gifts. My niece and sis-in-law receive one gift at Christmas.

Food wise, we're as organic as we can afford. Our musts organic wise is milk, spinach, tomatoes, ketsup, mustard, herbs, kale. Otherwise, I have a big garden and I grow in bulk what we eat the most and grow most of what is on the "dirty dozen" list. I'm also moving toward locally sourced meat and eggs direct from the producers.
Our local library system is a great source, especially for the kids. I've also met a few mommy friends along the way and feel so blessed (even though I'm the "old" Mom, lol)
I've also attained memberships to 3 different museums and use them several different times a year. They're all due around tax time so that's our main "treat" with the return.

A tip I'd like to share: if you find yourself in a position of needing to replace an expensive appliance, consider using the Home Depot credit card and its built in 0% interest for 6 months on ANY purchase of $299 or more. Can't tell you how many times I have utilized this option to obtain the items that I need in my home (washing machine, dryer, chest freezer, upright freezer, generator, kitchen stove, new flooring, etc.) You must be very mindful of the required payoff date to avoid paying the accumulated interest, and you must also make monthly payments, but this can really be a viable option. Once established with a Home Depot credit card, they will mail/email even better offers that extend the time you can pay off a sizeable purchase. It's something to consider; it's an option that has served me well and I will continue to use. Thanks for another great video!! Love the recipe that you shared!

My clothes dryer was new in December 1979. Two years ago, it stopped working and I debated buying new or repairing and decided to repair. The repair cost around $235.00 which is about the original purchase price of the dryer. The repairman replaced the broken belt and recommended he also replace two pulleys that were very worn. Two years later and it is still working fine. BTW the dryer was purchased with $200 of gift money from my grandmother and uncle after we lost our home in a tornado.

For birthdays and Christmas, where I live things go on sale often. I pick and choose during those sales, sometimes 70%-90% off, to account for those or for a birthday that we know our kids might get invited to.
I shop seasonal sales for clothing for the kids, too. Winter items by spring range from $1 to $3 and it gives our kids clothes for winter so much cheaper than $10-$15 per outfit or piece. Side note, in the areas where I have access to thrift shop a kid's dress can be $7 and a t-shirt $5 and that's on the lower end. So the trick for clothes where I live is the seasonal bit.

I love scratch and dent but I’ve learned not to shop the “scratch and dent” individual stores locally. Our fridge quit (it was a terrible setup and we made the decision to get a different model) and we decided to go “new” but from a local scratch and dent store. Big mistake. That fridge quit unexpectedly within days and we lost food. The fridge they replaced it with is a nice high-end model but it’s had its issues too! Washer and dryer went almost immediately after. Looked into repairs but wasn’t worth it. Bought brand new from big box stores on sale and it’s been worth it. I know others have had the opposite experience but it’s never gone well for us with “second hand” appliances from the stores that claim they are only scratch and dent.

We ended up selling all the STUFF we stacked and our cabin journey began. The first ourchase was an old wood cook stove from an antiwue shop nearby. The cabin was all set to be used in a short time. I do a similar recipe with tuna fish. It was a Friday go to during Lent. I have a silicone phone case cover in case of dropsies. There are also neoprene cases and holsters, which I never used on a belt, just to keep the phone safe.

For my birthday I asked for a package of smoked salmon. Definitely a luxury we can't afford very often. So delicious.

We were looking at fridges 8 years ago as our current one was making noises and more. We were still shopping and wanted stainless steel with a number of other wants inc,Inc, jo water dispenser for something to fit in our small space when we saw a landlord special, lower end, white Hooint along side the road with a free sign. Were still in a simple fridge in white without any chips were aware of and it has probably survived 20 to 30 power outages. Outside of the renters with low tech landlord fridges in the surrounding area, most of the fridges have not withstood the test of time, outages, and brown outs. - We have checked and we have enough buffer money to buy a low tech replacement at any time. Its not been a high enough of a priority to replace a functioning fridge with something similar in stainless; but we could.

Like you said, it wasn't a high enough priority! Good for you!

Enjoy your videos and although I practice most of the things you discussed, can’t emphasize how much others need this information.
