Not sure how far i'm into the game just hit 20H lvl 50 and i agree the battle system is so fast you barely realize you steam rolled all the enemy's in couple seconds...I'm loving it tho the characters are really good and yea most areas seemed washed out a bit and some just look amazing, That said for me it was worth the money buying it day one. Very fair review i think its 8/10 but you giving it a 7 seems fair as well.
Being able to play as Laeticia does raise my interest. Having to do a second playthrough as Raymond to get the full story... makes me think that I should at the very least wait until summer, when I'll have more free time. (And even then, I'm not sure if I even *want* to play as Raymond.)
You'll get the same story regardless of who you choose, there will just be a few times where they'll be separated and either have certain conversations with other characters or some different cutscenes/party members. You don't necessarily need to play both, but playing whoever you don't the first time will give you some context or insight to other things. For a single playthrough only doing the main story, it's about 35-40 hours, but it will definitely be longer if you want to do everything.
@@willowingwhispers2612 Thanks, that's some useful context. Seems the review was a bit misleading (or light on detail, at least) when talking about getting the full story.
As a star ocean og player i give this one a 8 on 10 i would have give 8.5 if they gave the characters better art style especially the main one Raymond. I think Star ocean franchise will redeem themselves and be back on track.
I do want to say, I know everyone has different taste. But I love every aspect the combat at first with the AP point caused a little concern but ad the time goes on the combat becomes very complex and it worries me that this guy may not have finished the entire game to have to come to the conclusion the the battle system is " passable ag best" when it becomes really complex just a couple hours into the game he never mentioned their ailments, magic attacks, dazes and more and that you need tecnic becomes some enemy's don't see, so you can do this move called a blind sided attack which is how you gain an extra bar of AP and that will allow you to produce more attacks and be able to consecutively hammer into your enemy and ALSO they added if you run or dodge it slows down thr AP refill gauge. And there's so much more to it. I absolutely love this game and I feel like here the review has not done it justice. Please check out other reviews
Going by the footage in this video, it seems the reviewer really sucked at the combat, hardly ever using Duma during it, which is what makes the combat fun
@@ranzorr thank you, like I said I'm very frustrated with this reviewer and I question if he even played the game fully because he barley touches on 10 maybe 20% of the combat mechanics, and it really frustrates me
Honestly I’m glad the game didn’t flop as bad as it’s predecessor, however it does have some rough areas I do hope in the future we see another star ocean title that’s built on this, taken some feedback, put more money into a project and is led by a comparable team that knows how to deliver its product. This game is still awesome but it feels like it’s almost there and that bodes a lot, and at times feels even more disappointing than a game that did flop.
It’s not the best but it’s not trying to be. It’s trying to be Star Ocean the game people fell in love with years ago. The combat gets better and better with time and the characters are great. Fell like with the resources they had, try ace did a great job with this one.z
Geez dude you seem pretty salty about a random comment on a youtube video. If this game made you cry so hard why dont you send some letters to Square Enix head quarters and cry to them about it.
Man I really like the characters so far, been a long while since a JRPG had "mature" personality wise characters(god I needed this after fire emblem engage)
Thank you so much for this comment. Was on the fence about buying this cos I loved S.O Till The End of Time on PS2. I got platinum for Tales of Arise but I thought it was awful. Saved me another 50hours of monotony. I'll wait for FFXVI 👍
I've been a Star Ocean fan since the early SNES days and clearly the people who've reviewed this game obviously never played previous Star Ocean games. This new generation of gamers are so used to playing Final Fantasy 15 or Final Fantasy Remake (I love FFR though). Star Ocean has always had it's same combat system.
I'm glad everyone seems to be happy with this game. I love 5 and was pretty pissed that people might have killed the franchise with the bandwagon of knocking on it. I mean they mentioned things they loved in 3 and 4 that were improved in 5 and things they hated that were fixed in 5, yet they hated it? Yeah right.
Do the game has a balanced new game+ mode or you are supposed to start from scratch again? By balanced I mean that the level or enemy stats scales for the 2nd playtrought,, Scarlet Nexus had a new game+ but it was very boring because of the lack of this feature (When I played it, maybe now it's balanced).
I have a question for you about this game real quick the only Star Ocean game that I ever really played and finished was Star Ocean the Last Hope if I enjoyed that one would I enjoy this Star Ocean game as well thanks for this video
I need them to remake or remaster the best installment in the series Till The End of Time for Switch. Back on topic, I might pick this up. Tales of Arise was fun in the beginning but something about the Tales series is just ugh
Hmmm I think the graphics are fine, not very dated at all. The characters are amazing. The combat is pretty meh, but I really like the worlds Tri Ace created for this game
Why does that matter? Post Game content has always been such an awkward idea, in fact I would be more interesting in a game if it Didn't have it. Why is it an awkward idea? Well compare these two. You finish a game, see the credits. You think man, great game I'll always remember this. With post game content? You finish a game, see the credits... then you think okay time for the post game stuff. Then you do that and think okay I did everything I'll turn it off and never play again. Absolutely Horrible way to finish a game.
@@Vaquix000 You don't get to tell me what I do with my post game! I will do another run through, thank you very much! Maybe you learned a little about opinions and how subjectivity works.
Fun banter between party members, fun moments and fast-paced gameplay make for... a good game to get absorbed into until the Elden Ring DLC finally gets announced~ :)
This game is so fun fast and action packed (you can basically fly around in these massive yet linear maps even walk on roofs in towns) varied and beautiful in its scenery and so much to treasure hunt. It excels at all the things that made me fall in love with JRPGs back in the early 2000’s. So many ways to spend SP that you really have to weigh your options which is a plus for me. Story is just standard Star Ocean which is fine. I think it deserves more love than the “critics” are giving it (meanwhile they drool over whatever lazy cheap thing Nintendo farts out every month). Anyway, I hope it does well and that we get more SO in the future from Tri Ace!
Played the demo, it feels super smooth. Wish the character designs were…a lot better. Side note: Really sucks that Xenoblade is stuck on the Switch. (Yes I know about emulation)
This game builds on the best parts of the other games except the crafting mechanic and that you need binoculars to read anything on the screen. I can't say anything for 5 however as I never played it. But the phantoms were done better than 4, gameplay is what I wish tales of arise was and should be what they aim for in the future, the story flowed very well. And best voice acting for a JRPG I can think of which was a major complaint for 4. If they kept the crafting mechanic of 4 I'd say this could be the ultimate swan song to the series.
Ive been a long time SO fan, played 2,3,5..And while I like 6, for veteran rpg players wanting to play the game: 1. Good gameplay, but way to easy (even post game dungeons) 2. Its a go-to-this-and-that-place- and-face-a-plot-dialogue-bossfight story 3. My God, the story is over suddenly, with no tension build up really.
Finally bought this on Sale, my back log was too crazy when it came out. I'm ok with the Reviews, just excited to be in this Universe again, haven't played a Star Ocean game since the last one on PS2, till the end of time? (i think that's the name lol). But yeah almost done with FF16 and was wanting another RPG more JRPG game to dive into after I'm done!
The next Star Ocean will be look like PS2 game and it cost the same as this game. Yes is super fun too. If only I have the money for those people make game like this then they never worry much about work anymore.
90% of the time I see someone critique a game made in the last couple years for looking like a PS2 game I have to stop and wonder if they've suffered too much head trauma over the years, because PS2 games look like dogshit compared to modern levels of remotely-decent outside of possible cinematic cutscenes. Even low-price indie titles look better than that at this point.
@@natchu96 could not agree more. There are countless times that I came across with such obnoxious people on the internet who loves to exaggerate things like this yoyo guy here. He probably thinks that making such awful comeback would make his comment valid but truth to be told, he does not even know what he is talking about. People who keep saying that games featuring this kind of graphics are PS2 level like, they have never played a PS2 game before. Even if we tried to put a side-by-side comparison, he would still ignore the hard cold facts.
I like it, I dig how he doesn't just look the same as so many jrpg characters. I mean let's face it cloud strife looks boring as hell with a realistic face, some random model dude who is depressed all the time. Sometimes realism rips the charm from characters
@@Vaquix000For me it's the "realistic" render that hold it back. The realistic shadow just not work well on anime characters. Anime characters rely a lot on over exaggerated expression, to show the emotion of character. In this case they choose to sculpt eyes, mount instead of just rely on 2d texture, and didn't animate well enough to emulate those expression, so it's look stiff and feel more like a doll than a living beings. And the character model shadow is render a bit more flat compare to their environment so the npc look a bit out of place. I actually like it's 2d art from the promo pictures a lot, since the style is unique compare to all those anime face that seem to come out from the same factory on the market. I just wish it to lean a bit more 2D when render. like "Tale of arise" which is compliment the style on the character, not holding it back like this game.
Unfortunately, Square Enix was too stingy to offer a German localization, so I won't play this game. My English is good enough to watch videos or a film. But for an extensive rpg it's too exhausting for me in the long run
If you finished a 40 hours game twice, as you seem to have, you should have at least 8 minutes of gameplay footage. It's hard to watch a video if you repeat your footage so frequently.
The stamina bar is the most frustrating thing I've ever experienced, every... EVERY boss fight depletes my stamina bar down to 5 almost instantly and its next to impossible to increase it back up against them so it ends up being frustrating as hell to do anything while trying not to die, I won't be recommending it to anyone I know until they patch that to a actually fun state because its the biggest fun killer I've ever experienced, this game could've been great it they actually create real skills and used the ap system for the real skills not the basic attack
@@gorillaphin8071 He's right though. There's no denying it. I watched players take on Universe difficulty in their first playthrough and they learned the combat and deal with bosses much better than those who played Galaxy difficulty.
@@bumbayker No, not really, the stamina bar forces you into a specific type of play style because you are always trying to add to it and avoid it being deplinished, it is the most disliked aspect of this game from reading over countless comments from others frustrated by it besides the MCs hair 😆 its basically trying to be unique for unique sake and making something frustrating in the process, every player has the right to their thoughts on systems implemented in a game and just because ior someone else can beat the game doesn't make it a fun system it makes it s bearable one through the process
I played through the ff7 remake ep 1, and I can say not a fan. I am a huge fan of the og game. With all of this said, I loved this game it was fun interesting and kept me entertained throughout.
I was playing the demo and honestly, so far it's not terrible..but the combat is atrocious. It just feels like you spam the same 2-3 hit combo and then run around until your AP fills back up. I don't think I'll be buying this game anytime soon. Maybe if it's ever on sale for $20
Comparing this games looks to scarlet nexus and code vein is ridiculous. You're comparing actual anime style shading... to a game going for a more realistic look and then saying the latter looks better and the former is ancient?... what? Yet I'm sure you'd say arise looks way better than nexus and vein. That whole part just doesn't make sense

Loving the story. The characters. The setting. Exploration is great. But if they don't increase the text size I'm going to die of a headache trying to play lmao
@@Neuvari You can like both orange and apple and preffer one from the other even if they were different. People just have different tastes
@@whatthe9256 yeah but still its not something to compare to, you can say like for example like it better than tales of arise etc because its in the same genre and comparable
An excellent game and a great review.
Thank you
Not sure how far i'm into the game just hit 20H lvl 50 and i agree the battle system is so fast you barely realize you steam rolled all the enemy's in couple seconds...I'm loving it tho the characters are really good and yea most areas seemed washed out a bit and some just look amazing, That said for me it was worth the money buying it day one. Very fair review i think its 8/10 but you giving it a 7 seems fair as well.
Being able to play as Laeticia does raise my interest.
Having to do a second playthrough as Raymond to get the full story... makes me think that I should at the very least wait until summer, when I'll have more free time. (And even then, I'm not sure if I even *want* to play as Raymond.)
thats why there are 2 choices
@@gokuvegeta7770 Thanks for your non-contribution.
@@JediMB im only telling the truth sorry it ruffled your feathers
you can fly around and there's Elena so 10/10
As a star ocean og player i give this one a 8 on 10 i would have give 8.5 if they gave the characters better art style especially the main one Raymond. I think Star ocean franchise will redeem themselves and be back on track.
Just enjoying the love Star Ocean is getting at the moment.
Wish there was a Switch release. Playing this portable would've been amazing
Totally agree.
@@ranzorr thank you, like I said I'm very frustrated with this reviewer and I question if he even played the game fully because he barley touches on 10 maybe 20% of the combat mechanics, and it really frustrates me
@@fatedforanarchy gotta say that, just by playing the demo, I was having way more fun in combat than what is shown in this review.
My hopes are back for the series of this game. I’m glad they made it alive again and it feels positive that they will continue more series 😁
Appreciate your review this is how a reviewer should be instead of ranting on how bad the game is.
Honestly I’m glad the game didn’t flop as bad as it’s predecessor, however it does have some rough areas I do hope in the future we see another star ocean title that’s built on this, taken some feedback, put more money into a project and is led by a comparable team that knows how to deliver its product. This game is still awesome but it feels like it’s almost there and that bodes a lot, and at times feels even more disappointing than a game that did flop.
we all just want a Second Story remake
And you got it.
Not sure if someone already posted this tip, but for those who've yet to know:
Turn off BLOOM EFFECTS, if you find the game TOO blurry.
I liked the boss fights personally, and I love the combat. My issue is not having a respec option. That is my only gripe.
I love it so far ! I’m so happy they decided to continue their series 😁
Man I really like the characters so far, been a long while since a JRPG had "mature" personality wise characters(god I needed this after fire emblem engage)
8 hours in. Not the best thing in the world, but its worth to play and very enjoyable. Its Tales of arise with slighly worse graphics.
Thank you so much for this comment. Was on the fence about buying this cos I loved S.O Till The End of Time on PS2. I got platinum for Tales of Arise but I thought it was awful. Saved me another 50hours of monotony. I'll wait for FFXVI 👍
WTF IS Snes!!!! I've heard of Super Nintendo or S.N.E.S. But hearing Snes hurt my gamer pride LMAO😭 (laughing not laughing )
Is there a way to cahnge the outfit of the characters?
I've been a Star Ocean fan since the early SNES days and clearly the people who've reviewed this game obviously never played previous Star Ocean games. This new generation of gamers are so used to playing Final Fantasy 15 or Final Fantasy Remake (I love FFR though). Star Ocean has always had it's same combat system.
The reviewer lost all credibility when he said Sness game 😂 S-NES bud.
I really think some of the areas are gorgeous, and the foliage throughout the game is unique and looks great
Did you play more than 2 hours? You only show gameplay of the same three characters you have in the beginning of the game.
Just finished my 1st playthrough . I love it 😍
Holy shit please never let this guy narrate a review again.
is it worth a 60 dollar price tag
This will be the first one I play is it turn based combat or like hack and slash?
hack and slash
I'm glad everyone seems to be happy with this game. I love 5 and was pretty pissed that people might have killed the franchise with the bandwagon of knocking on it. I mean they mentioned things they loved in 3 and 4 that were improved in 5 and things they hated that were fixed in 5, yet they hated it? Yeah right.
I love 5 as well.
Just downloaded it never really played games like this before but I recently got steam and this looks good
Update?
@@PositiveEnergy36 It’s pretty good. The storyline is definitely the highlight.
People like you make me smile thinking these TH-camrs will actually respond to your personal questions.
Somebody tell square Enix to drop a version of STAR OCEAN 2 in SOME FORM
The exploration in this game is brilliant. Better even than the latest Xenoblade. That’s saying something.
I need them to remake or remaster the best installment in the series Till The End of Time for Switch. Back on topic, I might pick this up. Tales of Arise was fun in the beginning but something about the Tales series is just ugh
Looks like a good game. Thoughts?
Hmmm I think the graphics are fine, not very dated at all. The characters are amazing. The combat is pretty meh, but I really like the worlds Tri Ace created for this game
Love this game so far. I’m about 15 hours. Can’t wait to get back into it tomorrow.
Definitely an Improvement after Integrity & Failureness that's for sure😂😂👏👏❤
40-100 hrs of gameplay is amazing for the price
It is a deal-maker rather than a deal-breaker.
Nice game ☺☺ i love it 🥰🥰
What is the post game content like? if it is lacking like SO5 then I will probably give this a miss.
@@Vaquix000 Okay. Side content if you prefer. SO5 was devoid of it.
Combat is fun, the characters are likable. The story tho is not great, but the gameplay makes up for it.
The real game are the stars we made along the ocean
Thanks for the review. I'm interested in checking Star Ocean out
I don't think open world properly describes a game called "Star Ocean "
What kills it for me is the Denuvo, When will publishers drop that system killing virus.
Are you having any trouble launching the game on pc?
Why it not cracked yet
Star Ocean is one of those titles i have always enjoyed.
Ive been a long time SO fan, played 2,3,5..And while I like 6, for veteran rpg players wanting to play the game:
1. Good gameplay, but way to easy (even post game dungeons)
2. Its a go-to-this-and-that-place- and-face-a-plot-dialogue-bossfight story
@@natchu96 Yea, people over exaggerate so much.
@@natchu96 They've never played a PS2 game.
@@natchu96 Yes is the 90% brain trauma like you can't read what I post so you keep wondering what I am saying!
The character model looks straight from a ps3 era and looks a bit creepy. The environment looks amazing though.
My thoughts exactly, it is so weird.
I am glad to hear its ok the last one they made was terrible.
The crafting system holds up for most of the negative stuff if any
Sounds like it’s a modest step up from the last two games which were decidedly below average. I’ll wait for a steep sale.
I don’t like the constant back tracking
why do the characters look like Gelflings?

Sounds like you just need to Git Gud
@@ziegfeld4131 hahqh sure thing champ
Use R1 to defend to refill it back up. I know it the blindside but it also a defend.

I was playing the demo and honestly, so far it's not terrible..but the combat is atrocious. It just feels like you spam the same 2-3 hit combo and then run around until your AP fills back up. I don't think I'll be buying this game anytime soon. Maybe if it's ever on sale for $20
