You’re correct about spending hours dressing boards. As long as it’s reasonably neat, not going to cause a fire, not going to electrocute anybody, it’s fine. There’s an awful lot of social media photo shaming by some other sparkies, sometimes on boards that are good, but just not OCD neatness, which are perfectly fine.
Has a plasterer I always clean boxes out wile plaster is still wet then at end I pull the cables out of box and touch up plasterer around box if needed .. I’ve always did just looks a better job 👍
Aww bless them,I find having a pish in the plasterer/tapers mix when there not looking then stand back and watch them cover your boxes as the mix flies and lands on there clothes and head and when you clean out your boxes with an estwing don't be shy
Count your self lucky that you could see the back boxes......Oct last year....full rewire of a 3 bed and I come back to find every back box plastered over and every cable shoved back in the ceiling...........words could not describe my feelings lol
Here in N. Americas, the plasterers, as you call them.... use paper tape around the electrical boxes and it makes it alot easier to install the outlets.... here the painters are also the plasterers.... I hate old wiring! having to rerun circuits to bring them up to code.... lots of work!

Nick, great videos mate, always worth a watch. Was waiting to see how you cut the slots in the c/u, then they just magically appeared 😁. Do you mind sharing how you do that please? I always thought you were limited to the existing knock outs which is a pain most of the time, cheers
A top tip for Adam, if a plumber ever upsets you, all you need is a tube of silicon and a length of plastic tube. Is amazing how you far you can get silicon down there pipes and block them with the plumber knowing
Plasterer's are taught at College to back fill socket boxes so that the Kitchen fitters can then drill through the cables and Painter's and Decorator's can cover over the evidence - Simples!
Plasterers Vs sparkies seems the norm on my job's at the minute. If he's cut all his downlighters out before it's skimmed then all hell breaks loose. Then he fills his boxes with skim it's a viscous circle 😂😂😂
I unexpectedly turned up one day on a rewire years ago just as the plasterer was skimming the walls in the kitchen. His excuse was that it gives a better finish to just cover the boxes leaving a small hole with his finger to identify where they were. Unbeknown to me the client had heard this heated debate and at the end of the job deducted fifty pounds from his invoice and gave it to me. I was an apprentice at the time probably Adams age digging out the back boxes when he returned demanding his money back from me threatening to cut all our cables and beat me up. He left shortly after that without any money in the back of a police car, the client just happened to be a retired copper. He left
Had a plasterer completely fill my back boxes before on a full house rewire, unfortunately for him he left his gear along with 2 bags of plaster, so I mixed 1 bag of plaster and 1/2 bag on concrete and through the contents in his bucket of shinny tools including newish marshal towns. Left it in the sun for a couple days. He face was a complete picture to say the least!!!
Hi Nick! Love watching your videos! What would you advise be for someone looking to become an electrician who is not straight out of school? I am 28 and really keen to become an electrician but very confused on how to become one. Any guidance on the best routes into the industry would be amazing!
The only real recognised form in our industry is an apprenticeship. At your age it would be an adult apprenticeship. I run an electrician company and have put loads of guys through them. Don't fall for the scams saying you will be an electrician in 6weeks it's the biggest waste of money. Ask any real electrician they will tell you its not a real qualification as there is no way you can learn a varied subject like this just in a class. You need to learn from a tradesmen who can show you the real world way to do each type of job.
True as it stands I think the ceiling is being plaster boarded though so technically yes in the interim period the IP rating is not acceptable (unless he has sealed the knockout area which I don’t think he did )

I find a padsaw works well on cutting the access plaster from the boxs 👍
If the boxes can’t be accessed via front entry perhaps try rear entry could work!🤪
Putting in the joists is the better option for sure. 👍 Glad you listened to reason (Adam)!
On the joists, I've seen them with reinforcing wooden plates either side of the hole, where the joists are narrow
That’s hard work not doing rear entry on the DB. Couple of bits of batten ply sheet and a bit of pink plasterboard on top 🤘
Excellent work and thanks for the awesome content stay safe and take care

I would watch your IP4x and IP2X rating when cut slots out the board and putting trunking in like that
Why ?
