  • The Most INSANE Mercedes Supercar Was Completely Lost!
The Isdera Commendatore 112i stands as one of the most fascinating forgotten supercars of the 1990s. Born from the mind of German engineer Eberhard Schulz, this one-of-a-kind machine combined Mercedes-Benz power with groundbreaking design features that were years ahead of their time.
At the heart of the Commendatore was a massive 6.0-liter Mercedes-Benz V12 engine, the same powerhouse that would later find its way into the early Pagani Zonda supercars. This engine produced 408 horsepower and could push the car to speeds over 210 miles per hour. The power went through a special six-speed manual transmission, which the team had to create because Mercedes never made a manual gearbox for their V12.
The car's design was unlike anything else on the road. Instead of regular side mirrors, it had a periscope mirror on the roof - a feature that might look strange but helped reduce wind resistance. The doors opened upward in a gullwing style, just like the famous Mercedes 300SL, and even the engine cover lifted up the same way. The body was made from lightweight fiberglass and sat on a steel tube frame, helping keep the weight down to about 3,250 pounds.
What made the Commendatore truly special was its advanced technology. The car could lower itself by three inches at high speeds to improve aerodynamics - a feature that wouldn't become common on supercars for another decade. It also had an active airbrake that would pop up to help slow the car down, similar to what you see on modern Bugatti's and McLarens.
Despite all this innovation, the timing couldn't have been worse for Isdera. Just as they revealed the car at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show, Japan's economy crashed. Since most of the company's funding came from Japanese investors, the project fell apart. Only one Commendatore was ever completed. The car later went through several changes, including a brief period when it was renamed the "Silver Arrow" and fitted with regular mirrors and Mercedes badges. Eventually, Isdera bought it back and restored it to its original form.
For many people, their only experience with this incredible machine was in the 1997 video game Need for Speed II. The real car, however, still exists and sold at auction in 2021 for over 1.1 million euros, proving that some forgotten legends do get their due recognition in the end.

It's a crying shame that this, along with the Ford GT90 and the Lamborghini Calà never made it to production.

An interesting aspect to me is the long tail. It obviously contributed to the exceptional aerodynamics and subsequent high top speeds.

Interesting, elegant sideview, not 100 % convinced by the roundish front though, which looks very New Beetle-ish with those round headlights. But I admire the stubborness of its creator
