Storyline:
In this comic episode, Adam and Hoss Cartwright want to enter their newly purchased thoroughbred in the Virginia City Sweepstakes. Alas, Hoss loses the horse in a card game, and now must move heaven and earth to win the nag back. Complication piles upon complication, culminating in a wild racetrack finish wherein Little Joe is pressed into service as a jockey.

This story is a great example of what Adam, as the older third brother, brought to the series and what was lost from the show when Pernell Roberts left it. This story is another competition between the three brothers (this happened a lot in the early years and led to some of the best story lines). This time it was about a horse race. William Demorest ("My Three Sons" Uncle Charlie) seems to have the ringer for the race (The Hayburner) but the edge continues to change throughout the story as Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe each throw twists and turns into the plot. The eventual winner at the end may even come as a surprise to faithful Bonanza viewers. Great story writing and excellent playoff of the brothers as they compete against and try to outdo each other (the actors truly seem like they are enjoying themselves here, too!) "This Bonanza episode has all three brothers in competition during a horse race. Hoss could have and should have won this thing, but he lost a lot playing poker stable owner Percy Helton including a thoroughbred race horse. They're valuable animals those thoroughbreds, but they're bred for racing and that's all they're good for. Adam and Hoss try to raise enough money to buy him and get him fit for racing before Helton sells him. He's eating too much of Helton's hay and not earning his keep.
In the meantime Little Joe goes to work for William Demarest and Ellen Corby on loan to them from his dad to bust some broncos. Demarest has a fast horse himself and a gimmick that could just win the race for him which I will not reveal. Some heavy money is laid down on this race.
Very funny episode with some droll performances by the Cartwright brothers and the guest cast. I happen to have acquaintance with someone for about 45 years who is quite like Percy Helton in physical appearance and manner. So this is an interesting episode also because like Percy Helton in the show, this individual is quite cheap. I got a particular delight in seeing what happens to Helton in the end." This is my second best episode after Springtime. It's funny, it has all three brothers, the two old timers are meaner than snakes, no shootings and most of all, no dead fiancées. Just a perfect episode.
I love the episodes with the 3 brothers and all their ideas, jokes and arguments, usually the episodes focused on one or two of them.

I've been watching Bonanza since it came out in 1959 , I was 6 then ,I too think it was the BEST actin Pernell Robert's did Portraying Adam Cartwright!

Oh my gosh, I just LOVE the episodes where all 3 brothers are involved! I could not stop cracking up at their facial expressions in this one - especially Hoss and Adam. That team up is so underrated, they're such a fun duo. 🤣 everyone really seemed like they had a blast making this episode.

I absolutely love 'Bonanza' It should be saved for eternity, so that people, yet to be born, can enjoy it........as I know, they will.
The sarcasm and humor here are timeless, I'll be laughing every time I think about Bonanza now, this is so hilarious. And the irony of betting for and against and borrowing money from family and friends with security can sometimes be a little painful, hahahha.

Percy Alfred Helton was a wonderful actor. He was a Hollywood classic. This show had incredibly beautiful horses. Amanda Blake (Gunsmoke) rescued many of these show horses.
This has got to be one of the funniest episodes. These brothers are so great together, all brothers take note. They may as well be a family for real. That cute lil Joe ♥️♥️♥️

Certainly the most enjoyable episode I’ve seen to date. I wonder how many people involved in this episode would have imagined that Ellen Corby was yet to go on to become a national treasure (as Grandma Walton).
She almost seemed the same character as Grandma Walton in this episode! I was 9 almost 10 when the Waltons premiered, and a little too young to grasp the concept of the Bonanza episodes, glad I can see them here!

A few years back, at a Bonanza convention, this episode - " The Hayburner" - was voted the fan favorite : Not too shabby with14 seasons and 431 episodes to pick from ! :) It surely is one of my favorites, too.
This is my favorite, too! So much fun... and I love that all the Cartwrights are in it.

Being the youngest sister in my family I was glad to see lil Joe get over on Adam anyway. He was always getting over on Hoss, that was a given. Remember the Flapjacks Contest and the Old Sheba Episodes. Lol 😂😂😂😂. William Demarest played in both episodes.

The best part of this movie was the wife. She is the perfect actress to play a wife or just a fussy o’l lady. This is the third Bonanza movie that I’ve seen her acting in, plus some other than the Bonanza series. 🥰🥰😢

I was able to tour the original Bonanza house just outside Tahoe before it was closed, its alot smaller than what TV shows.

... silliest and most dangerous way to "break" horses. I know it is still done this way in many places.
Not so many these days. Horses have gotten too expensive. Most people ground train first.
There are a lot of videos of the Extreme Mustang Makeover competitions. They are all ground broken first. A lot of the competitors are girls.
